NUON heeft geprobeerd een zaak over gezondheidsklachten in de doofpot te stoppen. Nuon wilde de zaak schikken, mits de klagers een contract zouden tekenen waarin stond dat ze er met niemand over mochten praten, op straffe van een boete van 25.000 euro. Cynthia, op dat moment net acht weken zwanger, besluit uit voorzorg niet bij het isoleren aanwezig te zijn en de nacht ergens anders door te brengen.Als ze de volgende dag terugkomt in huis stinkt het nog erg en wordt ze benauwd van de lucht en krijgt jeuk. Een telefoontje naar Nuon levert als reactie op dat dit "wel twee weken kan duren". Op de vijfde dag van het isoleren vlucht ze haar huis uit en trekt bij haar schoonouders in.

Sindsdien heeft ze nooit meer in haar huis geslapen.GeheimhoudingsplichtNUON is bereid de kwestie op te lossen, maar dan moet de familie een contract met een geheimhoudingsclausule tekenen: geen informatie naar derden, geen publiciteit, op straffe van het betalen van 25.000 euro.Ze krijgen het schikkingsvoorstel op 26 april, een paar dagen voordat NOS en Nieuwsuur over de pur berichten. De familie moet van Nuon wel binnen een dag beslissen. Geprikkeld door het voorafgaande jaar besluiten Cynthia en John dat het wel even kan wachten. 'Je brengt een kleine chemische fabriek in je huis, met alle gevaren van dien', zo zegt ze. Met name di-isocyanaat kan schadelijk zijn voor de gezondheid. Ze wijst op Amerikaanse wetenschappelijke literatuur waarin schadelijke effecten van het sprayen met PUR zijn beschreven.De Environmental Protection Agency, de Amerikaanse variant van het RIVM, adviseert ook om ten tijde van het uithardingsproces buitenshuis te verblijven. Volgens sommige fabrikanten kan de wachttijd oplopen tot 72 uur.
