I am never going to shop at Office Max again, I'm boycotting this store for good.

On December 23, 2013 I went into Office Max (here forth to be referred to as OM) to ask about a laptop they had for $334 on their website that was supposedly in stock at the River Street Santa Cruz CA Store. Some guy helped me, and went in the back and in about 10 minutes came out with the laptop. First off, he wouldn't even let me touch the box, like I was going to run out the store with it or something. Dragging my cane behind me, yeah right. So we get to the check out and I ask, "Ok so what is my brother doesn't like using Windows 8, may I return the item." The clerk says, VERBATIM: "Sure, just make sure you keep all the packaging and you have your receipt, we will refund your money as long as it's within 14 days." So I was cool with that. 14 days is fair.

I find out a few days later that my brother will not use W8 no matter how much I persuade him to give it a go. So today December 30, 2013, I set out to return the laptop to OM. I had my receipt, I had it all wrapped up in the original box, with plastic bags all neatly put in the box EXACTLY as it was. I get the same clerk who helped me buy it on the 23rd. He even remembered me. And then he goes, "oh, it's been opened, well, sorry there is a restocking fee since it's been opened, and it's 15%." I was like "WHAT?!" He says it's printed on the receipt, which I checked for myself earlier to see what the specs were for returns, just to make sure. If you check OM receipts they purposely print the back with a very PALE color ink so you can barely read what it has printed. On the receipt it states "A 15% restocking fee may be applied to some items." That's all it had, nothing about which items, or why.

So I asked the clerk, why a fee and he tells me "oh it's cuz OM doesn't make any money on computers at all." Then I asked what exactly is the restocking and I was told "nothing, we just stick it back in the box and put it back into inventory."

I was angry! Very angry. I purposely asked this kid (who was maybe 20) if I could return the stupid laptop when I bought it and he said NOTHING about a restocking fee. OBviously if he had I would have asked my brother NOT to open the box. So you know they're making money on all returns with that 15% restocking fee. So instead of getting my full amount I spent on the stupid laptop back I got $289. RIPOFF!!  I'm a disabled person so I truly feel like I was taken advantage of. I'd get charing a fee it if something was missing, like a cord, or whatever, but EVERYTHING was there, he hadn't even taken the laptop out of it's little static-free cloth.

I am never, EVER stepping foot in this RIPOFF store again, nor buying anything from this RIPOFF company again. And I mean n-e-v-e-r. I don't need any of their junk anyway. It's cheap, Made in China CRAP, (no offense).

I knew OM was a crappy company, with cheap crap and rude clerks etc., but this takes the cake. Charing me a restocking fee on something that I purposely asked about returning when I purchased it, being LIED to flat out like that is the last straw for me.

Everyone needs to boycott stores like this, period. We can all live wthtout some new cheaply made piece of plastic crap anyway. New pens, printers whatever, you can buy it from family-run businesses that will A. Treat you like you are a valued customer and B. Tell you honestly if you can, or cannot return something and if they do lie to you, take your money some place else. There is no excuse for a company like this to treat their customers like this, lying is NOT acceptable. They ONLY way you can get to a company that cheats its customers is through their pocket-book, money is ALL they care about. Hit 'em where it hurts and MAYBE they will get the message.

Thanks for reading. Join me in boycotting Office MAx!

I copy and pasted this directly from the Office Max web site: The emphasis is mine.

"Technology
Technology products may be returned for a full refund if in the original, unopened packaging (including all accessories and manuals) with the original sales receipt (as defined above) within 14 days of the original purchase date. Opened technology products may be returned for a refund within 14 days of the original purchase date with the original sales receipt but will be subject to a 15% restocking fee. Defective technology products with the original sales receipt are eligible for an exact-item exchange within 14 days of the original purchase date and will not be subject to a restocking fee. Technology products without a sales receipt are not eligible for return.  Technology products consist of, but may not be limited to, computers (desktop, laptop or netbook), monitors, digital cameras, hard drives, business machines, networking equipment, projectors, cash registers, digital picture frames, shredders, telephones, computer peripherals and accessories."

It looks like they adhered to their policy. You may not like it but there it is in black and white.  I have always had good luck with OfficeMax and their stuff is as good as anyone elses.

NO! I do not, nor have I ever worked for OfficeMax or any other store.
