Purchased a cross-cut shredder 7/29/06. Was told at the time of purchase to buy the 1-yr. warranty and if the machine stops working, I would receive a $40 credit in the store -- didn't even have to return the machine. So, I purchased the 1 yr. warranty also. The machine stopped working several months after purchase.
When I called Customer Service, I was told that the machine was under manufacturer's warranty (manufacturer is in China!). So, I waited until now, July 07, and was told that the machine is STILL under manufacturer's warranty (China).

Hi,
Sorry to hear you are having such problems. I'm a new employee to Office Max and how the policy works is our protection plan begins AFTER the manufacturers plan. BUT if the manufacture doesn't protect it then Office Max will protect it for you, so you must either see if the manufacturer will cover it or wait until the manufacturer coverage is over with.
Hopefully that helps, but sorry to hear you are having such issues.

Although I know this does happen, this woman waited A YEAR before trying to have her broken shredder fixed, when the manufacturer would have replaced it within that time period.....
Also, I worked at Office Max from 01 to 09, and the only shredder we sold that was made in china was the Office Max brand. The rest were made in Thailand, Mexico, America, Europe... blah blah blah. The point is, THE PLACE THE PRODUCT IS MANUFACTURED DOES NOT MATTER. Why did she type that it was made in China? Did she actually think she would have to ship it to China to get it fixed? This woman doesn't realize that most products are made over seas? Did she honestly never even try to call any of the local support phone numbers? Every shredder Office Max sells has a 100% replacement guarantee from the manufacturers, and all of the manufacturers have customer support teams in the US.

Only Common Sense

Only commoin sense that the manufacturer should be held responsible for the one-year warranty, and then the additional store warranty kicks in. Too many people complain to the place-of-purchase and don't hold the manufacturer accountable, so the big guy laughs all the way to the bank and never makes any changes while the little guy (Retail Store) takes a beating.
I would question whether you were shopping for product relisbility and manufature reputation, or for price? Did you purchase the size and type of shredder you really needed, or just for price? Did you push the product past it's intended use, and therefore your abuse caused it to stop working? You can't blame the Retail Store if manufacturer is in China, etc., as they are usually selling the product in gtood faith.
Bottom line, your additional warranty is to ensure that the product works same after MFR warranty as it did when you purchased it, or you'll get a gift card for purchase of a new one. But yeah, the Mfr has some responsibility to the consumer, too.

Is it an extended warranty?
AUTHOR: Duane - (U.S.A.)

If the warranty you purchased was an extended warranty, then it probably takes effect upon expiration of the manufacturer's warranty. Look to see what the original manufacturer's warranty period was - it is probably one year.
