I was terminated from a job that OfficeTeam Chapel Hill placed me at because I had to leave early due to vomiting at work. My initial contact with OfficeTeam staff, Darby, consisted of literally about 5 minutes of her asking me very generic, general questions. Then I didn't hear from them until I called them back about a month later. Shortly thereafter I was placed into a job at Icon Clinical through Officeteam.

Two weeks later I was let go because of 'excessive absences' on a day when I had to leave around 2:30pm due to me getting sick at work. I had been feeling horrible since 11:45am when I developed cramps. I borrowed Tylenol from a co-worker, took 3 between then and 2:15 when I started vomiting. I called my boss, she had left early for the day, to let her know I needed to go home. She proceeded to say 'hmmmm, wait a few minutes, I'll be back there'. Over twenty minutes later, she breezed through the door, didn't look at me, told me to forward the phones, and kept walking into her office saying "see you Monday".

Forty-five minutes later, I got a phone call from Darby at OfficeTeam telling me it was my last day. She said that I sounded horrible and said "get better and call me Monday, don't worry, we'll still work with you". I called her Monday & was told she was out of the office so left a message. I never heard back so by Wednesday I called her a 2nd time. At which point she told me "I met with Icon Monday, they said you have a key of theirs (to the desk drawer with no personal files in it, paperclips, erasers, pens, etc.), can you bring it to my office?" I told her I was on my way to a long weekend away (to de-stress from what had happened) and would return it the following week after I returned.

Mind you, OfficeTeam is an hour drive for me and I had this key through no fault of my own. If the Icon manager, Vandna Amin, hadn't been so unprofessional and hasty in her decision to fire me for no good reason at all, I wouldn't have had the key. It was her responsibility to collect it from me, but then I guess when you are lying ('see you Monday'), its hard to remember to do things professionally.

Darby proceeded to leave 2 curt, cold, annoying messages on my voicemail (which I didn't hear until the following Wednesday when I returned) demanding I bring the keys to her office. I called her back Wednesday morning as soon as I heard the messages and told her it had been sent.

A little while later, I was told by a family member that Icon called them looking for the key. They chose to use my medical emergency contact to call about a desk key. Unacceptable. Especially considering I no longer worked for the company and that contact information is to be used for MY medical emergencies. Not to mention the fact that: Icon chose to ignore the fact that I was in a lot of pain and vomiting at work and demand that I stay 'a few minutes' which turned into over 20.

Then OfficeTeam treated me with such disconcern after agreeing that I had lost my job for no good reason. I called Icon to ask why they contacted my family member for something that was entirely their fault I had anyway since the manager had said 'see you Monday' pretending she wasn't angry and about to go fire me. OfficeTeam then called me back a 2nd time that day and the manager, Amanda, proceeded to threaten me with contacting authorities if I ever called Icon again.

The only other reason I was had to leave work early was one day when my dog was covered in a bright red, bumpy rash from head to toe (see attached pics). I went into work normally and asked Vandna if it would be alright if I had to leave a little early, late in the afternoon, to take my dog to the vet. I asked her twice that day about that and she kept assuring me it was fine, in fact she asked me around 12:30 if I wanted to leave and I told her I wouldn't need to until the vet appointment at 2:45.

Vandna and I had 2-3 conversations throughout the 2 weeks when she had assured me time off wasn't a problem at all. She said "There's no formal policy since you are a long term temp., just let me know, I am always here and can hop up on the Reception desk anytime. If you have an appt. or emergency or want to take vacation, just let me know." From that, I thought it wasn't a problem, if it was, it was her responsibility to tell me that, not to ask me if I wanted to leave even earlier and pretend it was ok.

Last I checked, freedom of speech was still a right in this country. As well as being treated like a human being with respect. OfficeTeam's lack of concern, lame excuse for 'interviewing' and placement (this job was no match for my experience whatsoever), judgement, siding with the company who of course is paying their paychecks, so I guess that makes the employee's worthless to them, and calling me back to threaten me after I asked them to leave me alone was all unacceptable. Most immature, unprofessional company I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

You brought this on yourself...

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, August 27, 2010

You got a hold of them on Wed and they asked for you to bring back a key.  It does not matter if it was a key to the company safe or totally empty drawer it was still property of the company.  So you should have made an effort to return it.

You said you would return it the following week because you were taking a long weekend.  Now, I don't know what you consider a long weekend.  But you told them this on Wed, and according to the rest of your report you didn't return until the next Wed.  I don't call this a long weekend, I call this a vacation.  But I really love the reason you are taking one.  That you had to "de-stress" because of what happened.

This has nothing to do with free speech.  As for any lack of respect, the only lack of respect here is the lack of respect you showed them.  Because YOU didn't think that the property you had was important, YOU didn't need to make an effort to return it.  Had you returned the key before you left on your "long weekend", or made arrangements for it to be returned they may have stuck with you..like they said.  But YOU basically blew them off so they in turn said "good bye".
