I wrote Ohio Edison two letters - one to change an address and one to take ACH withdrawals off the account.

Neither were honored and I was charged NSF funds.  When I called to tell them that they had received written notification for both the address change and to no longer take money out of ACH withdrawals, she told me I could not write, I would have had to call them!!!!!!!!!!!  Nothing on the back of the bill tells me I have to call.  Meanwhile they have attached NSF charges to my account even though they have received the payments by check on time.  So to summarize - Ohio Edison received a letter telling them not to make ACH withdrawals - but apparently you have to call and tell them and not write letters to prove you contaced them.

Not a RipOff...

AUTHOR: Robert - ()

Sorry to be so blunt but you really need to get into at least the 20th centry.  You obviously have Internet Access and you can do everything you wanted to do(and more) ON-LINE fromm their site.

The reason they(and just about every company out there) will NOT accept written request for account changes is because there is no way to verify that you sent the letter.  After all let's say you had an ex who holds a very big grudge against you.  In order to "get even" they write the company to stop automatic drafts and change your billing address.  So then say you don't pay attention to your account and after a month you come home one day to find your power cut off for non-payment.  I can guarantee that you would be on this site so fast complaining how they should not have honored a written letter instead should only accept requests made over the phone.

So...

So where is the ripoff? Sending a letter to change your account information is a tad silly. See ANYONE can send a letter to them and make requests. But lets say someone did not like you, and they sent a letter to the power company. And the power company honors this letter. YOU would be out of power and have to pay fees. This is one of the main reasons they want you to call, so they can verify that the person they are talking with is the person who can LEGALLY make changes to the account.

You took the time and energy to write a letter. You may have gotten farther if you had sent an email. There is no ripoff here. You just did not realize the implications of your actions thats all. Yes it caused you to have a NSF, but thats really on you. If they responded to every "letter" as you expected them to do for you, there would be chaos and a lot of angry customers. Unless it is a bill that is being paid they dont even look at letters. To safeguard their customers they have security protocalls in place.
