Purchased a brand new 9.9 hp 2016 Tohatsu outboard. The actual motor is a 2015 model not a 2016. They seem to come out with new models after you make your purchase. Received motor ran at prescribed break in period. Motor has severe vibration. After contacting Steve H at Cumberland water sports, he suggests it may be an overfill of oil in crankcase. I said ok, I'll give that a try. Nope, same vibration. So bad that after a 3 hr trolling trip, you wish you ran your big motor instead due to the uncomfortableness of the vibration. I then contacted a local dealer that sold Tohatsu's to ask what might be going on. Well after a 15 min lecture about buying this online vs at a dealer he said your out of luck really. Those motors need a PDC type inspection when new. He told me he could do it for 200.00 but couldn't promise me anything. Called Steve back at Cumberland, no response or answer. Go figure. Then went to Tohatsu. John A. Was the rep. Told me your motor is fine. I disagreed with him, told him I'm bringing it to a warranty dealer, to no avail nothing that they could do. In fact they felt the vibration, they contacted Tohastu, the marina (trident) was told to increase the rpm. Go figure. So now I have a motor that is set at 900 rpm at idle and has a strong buzz feel. Tohatsu sent a rep to see my motor. Keith was his name. Felt the vibration as well. Said "well take care of you". "Let's try a different pitch prop". " if that doesn't work, we'll do something to make it right". Well when the prop came, nothing. Now I have a squealing noise when troling. Ultimately in the end do not buy these motors as they are an inferior motor. They say" same as a merc". They are not. Do not buy online or from OnlineOutboards. Yep I'm sure there's success stories, take your chance. I did, I lost. Well I didn't really lose all of it. I'm looking to buy a main 115hp. Think God I didn't make the mistake of buying that through this process. Next time I will be able to watch, feel, and touch the motor I'm buying when it's running and feel good that at least it's going to run like it should. Learn from this. I wish I would of listened.

Thanks for responding to my ripoff report regarding my purchase of a Tohatsu but im failing to see how the points you make are relevant to my report as you had no issues with either service or your motor.  This really doesnt test the waters now does it with regards to if you had a problem would it of been resolved or are you just happy that you didnt have a problem and were lucky?  You mentioned I should of driven the motor to Tennesee.  Lets see from New York.  That would make a difference especially if nothing was resolved right?  Trust me i thought about it but reality set in.  It so happens that after further questions it was more than likely an imballanced fly wheel or bearing from what a mechanic told me.  Tohatsu didnt want anything to do with it.  I ended up trading it in and buying a new Merc.  Yep same motor built by same company.  I get it.  But this time I could have the dealer run it for me and could feel good about it. New motor purrs.  So in the end Tohatsu will have to deal with the old motor and get bad business from it.  It could of been a win win for them.

On Line Outboards - Excellent Experience

After having my local outboard dealers price several different 9.9 horse outboards I purchased a Tohatsu 9.9 outboard with a long shaft (I have a sailboat) and electric start.  That was six years ago.  It was easy to place the outboard on the new outboard transom motor mount I bolted to my sailboat stern (after reinforcing the inside).  I have changed the oil every other season - I changed the plug last year (maybe I put 20 - 25 hours per year on the engine).  I run the carb dry at the end of each season and fog as it is starting to die of fuel starvation.   I am very pleased with this outboard - it starts easily and I saved approximately $1,000 buy buying in through On Line Outboards.  I am just a sailor who has had a good experience.  If my engine had vibrated like was described here I would driven it to Tennessee for the problem to be fixed but then that is only six hours away from me....  If I had my druthers I would have bought local...  but not for a 50% higher price!
