I am writing this with hands that can barely move on the keyboard. Why? Because I am sitting in my Pangea Real Estate apartment and it is freezing. My fingers are numb. I am wearing a sweatshirt, long johns, wool socks, a pair of boots, a hat a sweatshirt, a scarf and I am wrapped in a blanket. All this despite the fact that my apartment has "free heat". I cannot choke down another bowl of broth or another cup of tea. I am freezing. The city of Chicago states that my apartment must be maintained at a temperature of 68 degrees between 8:30 am and 10:30 pm and 66 degrees between 10:30 pm and 8:30 am (Mun. Code Ch. 13-196-410). The current temperature in my apartment is hovering around 55 degrees. This is 7 degrees below its usual 62 degrees and both are below the required tempratures that Pangea must maintain within the law. I attempted to call the "24 hour emergency maintenance hotline" that my lease claims is "always there to help" me but instead of a frienly voice on the other line I was met with an answering machine. How does one leave an emergency maintenance request on an answering machine?? This is the latest of several problems I have had in the four months since I moved in to this unit and began doing business with this company, and I am sure it will not be the last.
I do not have a car and chose this building because it was small and has a laundry facility on-site. Nearly three months ago I received a notice that the laundry room had been vandalized and would be closed until further notice. I figured "further notice" would be a couple of weeks at most. Nearly three months later we are still without a laundry room and there is snow up to my knees on the ground. I feel it absolutely ludicrous to have to drag my laundry through the snow to the laundromat when a laundry facility is supposed to be available to me right accross the courtyard. Three months to repair a laundry room is an exorbinant amount of time. I contacted the office to request further information on when the laundry room would be fixed. I was told my property manager would contact me in 24-48 hours. I still haven't hear back.
I do not feel safe in the building after being robbed just a block away. A few weeks ago while taking the trash out I discovered the back gate which leads to the alley(and the dumpsters) was busted allowing unfettered access to the rear doors af the apartments. I called the office to submit a maintenance request. The next time I took the trash out the lock had been "fixed" with what looked like small pieces of plastic and super glue. It is only a matter of time before the lock is broken again and access to the rear of the apartments is again available to any hooligan paying a little bit of attention.
I'm not going to even get in to the loud upstairs neighbors, the marijuana smoking, the problems getting my gas turned on and the other nightmares I have experienced in the last four months as my fingers are now too numb to continue typing.
