Went to the orientation last week at PTL. They gave me a "tool bag". 'We will be deducting $300.00 from your check for this.', said the man in front of the classroom. 'You get it back when you quit or it's yours if you stay 2 years.' 'This is not optional, you have to take the bag.' Ok, there is strike one. I'm not too happy about being forced to buy a lock, jumper cables, kingpin lock, and an air gauge. I already have my own. I didn't pay $300.00 for this stuff either. Ridiculous.
I went with the equiptment manager to look at my truck. No wonder they hide them behind the shop, 2 buildings away. If you saw them before orientation, you would leave right away. The exhaust pipes were so rusty and with holes worn through. They 'fixed' that by welding over the weld that broke. Too cheap to change out the pipe. The hood was missing a piece of fiberglass the size of a watermelon. Well, they won't fix that, I understand that because the hood still functions, but you don't look so hot either. The oil stick shows oil well below the add line. No wiper fluid, but you don't want to use their wiper fluid...it's mostly just water. Company policy is if you need oil, you have to buy it on the road. You won't get any from the shop. Now I know why the oil stick reads so low.

Someone was in a hurry when they left. Ripped wires in every place that you would need inside the truck. Not to mention, the interior lights flickered then blew out when I turned them on. FILTHY. Unidentifiable items on the floor, black and green what not in the cup holders and on the walls and counters. 1 inch of dust and dirt everywhere. Garbage and glue on the cabinets and walls. Someone took a bite out of the spare tire they have you carry. My truck is awesome compared to CJ's. Strike 2.
His truck came with dog hair and bodily functions in his truck. He had to argue to get a hotel room. So, we waited...2 days for this company to fix and clean these trucks. From Wednesday to Friday nothing happened. We just sat there. CJ got a bus ticket home. I drove home. Both trucks still in shop status. But while we were sitting and waiting those 2 days, we learned a lot about this company. This is what made us really think...
First, if your idle time is 70% or more (including traffic), your cash advance will be cut off.

Second, they transflo their bills and logs. If you don't transflo your bills within 24 hours, not only will they cut off your cash advance, they will hold your paycheck after so many hours of late transfloing.

Third, I talked to a guy who has been there for 7 years. He just got his cash advance cut off for high idle. He said don't let these little things keep you from working for a great company. (I just put my mud boots on for all the rest of the sh## yet to come.)

Here is Joe. He has been working for PTL for 1 month. Last week he got 1600 miles and said he made $130.00. That's 30.46 cpm. He has been in breakdown this week. 3 days total for pm stuff. Earlier on the road he had a bad tire and an air leak under the cab. He was told to take the truck to TA to get it fixed. PTL refused to have TA fix the air leak. TA told Joe the hole is 3 inches long on the air line. So, Joe knew he might have another breakdown, if not an accident, so he went on into the scale house and went OOS. Gee, a company that holds your money and won't fix your truck unless your OOS? Strike 3...I'm out.

Joe and his fellow driver Ted (also here a month and with 1800 miles last week), are averaging 3 grocery warehouse loads a week. Well, no wonder they are broke!
My friend Todd and Pete went to Indianapolis to pick up their trucks. Pete's truck was full of glass from the windshield that was smashed in. He called his wife to come get him. Said he's done with PTL. Smart move Pete.
Todd's truck has a bunch of mechanical and tire problems. PTL made him take pictures of the tires he said were bad (with his cell phone and send it to them). He's been driving 25 years, you think he knows what a bad tire looks like? They made him drive to TA to fix some stuff, then to International, then back to TA (cause they were cheaper), then back to International (cause TA didn't have the part?). He pull a load or 2 then he quit too. (He was too broke to leave right away). Todd waited for 24 hours for a load after getting fixed up because his dispatch forgot to take him out of breakdown!?

I just posted all this because it was the most unreal setup I have ever witnessed. I know how they keep drivers. Those guys never saw it coming and still haven't. Thanks and you make up your own mind about PTL!!!

#4 UPDATE Employee

I am presently employed with PTL....

AUTHOR: Mrs. Pamela Eady Trk #9142 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 12, 2010

I am presently employed with PTL...I went through those same issues. But I am glad my recruiter didn't lie to me, it was pretty much the way she said it would be.

But the thing I don't like about this company is: they just purchased maybe 300 trucks. I've been employed with the company since April of 2009. Instead of giving drivers thats been here with no incidents or accidents, a brand new truck...they are giving them to the new hires. I am still driving one of the beat up clunkers. I made copies of my inspection sheet so they wouldn't say I damaged the truck.

I was told I would get a raise every six months in orientation, I haven't gotten a raise yet. No new truck. Always, my idle is too high. I have high out of route miles(even though I follow the route given me). I still don't understand how that works.

But all in all, PTL has gotten better as far as the way they take care of the trucks, The way SOME of the staff talks to you, the idle is still an issue but not as harsh as I've read. But they do stress about those out of route miles.

drivers dont count with PTL

AUTHOR: Tricia - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 18, 2009

My husband worked for PTL for 6 months and it was the worst experience he has ever had. in this ecconomy there is not a lot of jobs out there and he thought the company would be ok to work for - and we needed him to work. When he went thru orientation he was shocked at what they were saying and how they were treating the drivers. It was always you do this or you are fired.
One paper that he had to sign was if the trailer was broken into - my husband would be an accomplice. Nice right, the complany is building trust. My husband knew we were in trouble so he needed to stick it out. The idel time is horrible and I think it should be criminal. He is not allowed to have his truck on to give him heat or airconditioning. This is not safe for drivers, if they do not get the proper sleep then they are unsafe to drive. PTL expects the drivers to get up every couple of hours and turn the truck on and warm the cab up then turn it off. If it is hot they are expected to sleep with the windows down.
In the winter I was not as concerned as I was when it got hot. But when I knew he was in texas and it was 88 degrees outside and inside it was much hotter then that I was very worried. My husband slept with the windows down, bought a little fan and tried to sleep. He was unprotected, anyone could enter the truck while he was in the back - so any little noise woke him up.
In the first 3 weeks of working there I recieved a mag from the company and they have him listed as one of the 50 worst drivers due to his idle time. Mind you he was driving in NY and the east coast during snow storms and below freezing weather - but they did not care if he froze to death, they want the idle time down.
He would put in for his time off and they never got him home - they would say that he put it in wrong or the computer did not accept it. In his 5 months he was home twice!!! No joke.
My husband has driven trucks for 10 years and he used to be an owner- op- he believes in saving money for the companies. He will fix his truck when he can and does not idle excessively - but this company was insane. When he got a load going thru Murrary I drove 8 hours to get him and take him home. He turned in his tool bag and was told he would get reimbursed his money - well we only got 1/2 back because it was used!!!!
this is a joke of a company - they do not know how to treat the drivers. And the drivers are the company ---without them they would not make any money.

AUTHOR: Brandy Rose - (U.S.A.)

well i worked for PTL in 7/02 to 9/02.back then u didnt have to buy a tool bag. 70% of all lds pu were hazemate, they turned my truck down to 62mph because of ideling,(reason being my dispatcher had me sitting to much) I asked for another one ;was ignored.when i turned my truck back in a mechanic told me that they go thu 230drivers every 3 months, this was in 2002.Yea, drivers find out just how crapy the people are in this company, the bull S,an stupidity, being punished for something you had no controll of.Ive been driving for 23yrs an people say that companies are getting worse, actually its the quality of people thats getting worse, and im finding out that in the north east/south east people in trucking co's arent that great. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER LARGE TRUCKING COMPANY THAT DOESNT CARE ABOUT THE DRIVERS.

Also, Scott another driver that went to Tennessee to pickup his truck, came into the Murray, KY. yard that same night. 35% of his recap was missing on the trailer. The shop told him to run with it. We told him to call safety. Well, he drove off to New Jersey with the bad tire after calling safety. If you go into safety.gov online, get into the satelite system which lists all the tickets, OOS, fatalities, etc... on all the drivers for any company you want to look up. Check out all the OOS on PTL. By the way, the guy with the air leak in my story, he quit too.
