Here is a situation that could have been avoided if a man who was brutally victimized in the County Jail had his story told which he begged to do. Robert Krutko begged several news agencies to cover the very deplorable and dangerous conditions at the jail which everyone turned a blind eye to. Now a man is dead while lawsuits are mounting against the County from Robert Krutko and now the family of John Jacobs.

STATEMENT FROM FRANKLIN COUNTY SHERIFF CANDIDATE MIKE HERRELL ON THE RECENT FINDING OF FILTHY JAIL
CONDITIONS

Former Franklin County Deputy Sheriff and candidate for Sheriff, Mike Herrell, today offered to the following statement regarding the recent finding of filthy conditions in our county jail system:

Todays finding of the abhorred filthy conditions in our county jail is yet another example of the vacuum of leadership and management experience from the countys unelected sheriff, Zachary Scott.

When the Democratic Party handed the Sheriffs Office over to Zachary Scott, the county jail had steadily been dealing with filth and unsanitary conditions. Such was the case with Robert Krutko who, according to a report by WTVN 610, was one of several prisoners forced to lie in sewage, after a toilet backup and was covered from head to toe in urine and feces. Krutko also claimed he was denied medical treatment and denied a shower for days.

In September of 2011, an analysis by The Columbus Dispatch found that, between 2009 and 2011 Franklin County had to pay $1.1 million in taxpayer dollars to settle 27 lawsuits against the Sheriffs Office. These suits ranged from excessive force against jailed prisoners to feeding a prisoner food that had been rubbed on two deputy sheriffs private parts. At the time of the Dispatch report, Scott claimed he was going to address these issues. Obviously, the issues are ongoing.

This matter holds even more gravity when you consider that Franklin Countys jails are operated by 400 full-scale sheriffs deputies with more training and higher pay that most corrections officials in other large Ohio counties. Accordingly, the deputies should be held to higher standards.

Sheriff Scott went from corporal to sergeant to Sheriff in 60 days. He has no command or managerial experience.
Problems in the jail system can be expected to continue until the voters of Franklin County elect a qualified and experienced law enforcement professional to the Office of Sheriff.

This man is now disabled due to the conditions at the Franklin County Jail and has a pending Federal lawsuit against the County and the Franklin County Sheriff for these conditions..

 

As we have said all along the Franklin County jail is a dangerous place where Civil Rights are being stripped everyday. The County Commissioners are not only funding this operation but ignoring inmates being abused...
