The salesman, Patrick O'Reilly, misdiagnosed the cause of my car's misfire and then, in disregard to all the circumstances, recommended a costly and unnecessary repair. In spite of service records that my spark plugs, ignition wires, pcv, fuel filter, air filter etc had been replaced one year prior, he advised I replace those parts to fix my misfire.

I refused the service and asked him to simply fix the misfire. He came back to me (over an hour later) saying that the cause of the misfire was an engine problem (not an ignition problem) and they could not fix it. In other words, the $750 dollars worth of repairs he recommended would not have fixed the misfire. Fortunately, the mechanic down the street was able to diagnose and fix the problem (broken rocker arm) for $200.

I wouldn't trust those guys as far as I could throw them.

The original report did not state that the mechanic at Pep Boys implied that the plugs and wires were original, only that he recommended replacing them along with other items such as the fuel filter, PVC etc, all which can cause rough running or stalling regardless if they are original, or a year old. If he did imply that these parts were original, apparently he didn't even look under the hood, he was basically advising a major tune up without actually checking if it was required.

It is still not totally clear to me if this was an intentional attempt at a rip off, or just incompetence but at least they finally figured out it was an engine problem. I guess a misfire would not be caused by the brakes or tires, so it was a logical diagnoses.

A compression test would point to a valve not opening, and removing the valve cover would expose the broken lifter. Not really that complex, but Pep Boys are brake, oil change and tires, I would not use them for diagnosing a misfire. I do almost everything myself other then tires since I do not have a tire machine and Pep Boys have been reasonable with pricing. Granted they once forgot to tighten my lug nuts and the wheel came off as I pulled out of the parking spot, but they made good and gave me 1/2 off. Mistakes happen we are only human, but it really eats at me to read so many reports about mechanics that people trust charging or wanting to charge for diagnoses and services that do not fix the problem, incorrectly identify it or were unnecessary.

There is certainly a good dose of incompetence going around. Of that I am sure. However, there is no way a mechanic can mistakenly tell me that my car with 110,000 miles on it has the orignal spark plugs and wires on it. Absolutely impossible--if not from the brand and codes on the components, then simply from the cleanliness and lack of wear on them. These guys are crooks. And if you still think it's only incompetence, that's also a good reason not to deal with them.

They did diagnose it as being an engine problem. It was.


They also said they could not fix it. They cannot.


As Ronny stated, PEP Boys is not highly regarded for their mechanical expertise.

It may have been incompetence and not dishonesty...

...in other words, they may not have been intentionally out to rip you off. They simply could have been incompetent to diagnose a mechanical problem as the cause of the misfire, and blame it on electronics.

Since very few "mechanics" (and we are talking Pep Boys here) are skilled in electronics, they just assume any problem is electrical related. As is similar with an unskilled computer technician, the "easy" way to "diagnose" a problem is to just keep replacing components until the problem is cured. Unfortunately, this often comes out of the pocket of the customer, who is not well versed in electrical, or mechanical issues.
