Rod Jones was initially contacted for a quote to restore hardwood floors. When he realized I was doing a total renovation, he said that he had a crew that could do that as well. I had him quote it out, and the price was right, so I hired him. I showed up at my house (newly purchased and vacant) the morning that we were supposed to sign contracts, and his crew was already inside doing demo (not sure how they gained access). I thought it was unusual, but this was my first renovation, and I had been searching for a month for a provider, so I decided to let it go. No contract was ever signed I would like to add.

Fast forward 60 days, everything is going great so far. Pricing is fair, work is getting completed on time. One of Rod's employees (Steve Soutier) is a total loudmouth know it all, but tolerable at first (more on him later). Then one day out of the blue everything changed. Work basically stopped (even though all draws were paid). Rod became very distant and unresponsive. Steve became intolerable to work with. I have no idea what happened. I came to find out later that Rod had accepted another larger job, so I moved to the bottom of his priority list. It was at this point that he turned over pricing to Steve Soutier. There were many change orders that he did not give pricing for, and I assumed that since pricing was fair before, it would be fair moving forward. Boy was I wrong. I finally got pricing when the project was almost complete, and it was completely inflated. $150 for a sheet of drywall????

Steve also made many "executive decisions" without consulting me, that cost me money. The most costly being when he severed an electrical circuit, and then decided to close the wall anyway before fixing it. I then had to pay an electrician to come in, find the circuit, fix it, and then pay Steve and Rod again to fix the wall and the mistake they made. Steve also ran over my mailbox, broke my range hood, failed to install a toilet correctly, and used wood screws to mount a TV into a brick fireplace. Completely incompetent, or just didn't care. It became clear to me about 60 days in that Steve would intentionally create problems, so he could come in and fix them and be the hero.

Steve and Rod were also both entirely inappropriate with vulgar language and racist, sexist remarks. (((REDACTED))). Steve's sidekick (((REDACTED))) named Ruben who is very friendly and a hard worker from Mexico. Steve affectionately referred to him as "my little mexican", :(((REDACTED))) Steve also managed to offend my fiance and her mother with sexually charged comments that made them so uncomfortable, they would not come to the house while Steve was there working. Steve would also talk about his wife and how unhappy he was, constantly, along with reminding you how great he was hourly. Real class act.

I had fired Rod several times throughout the project because it became apparent that I was not a priority anymore and was going to bring someone else in to finish the job. He would always beg me to let him finish and would tell me that things would be different than last time. The final straw was when I gave Rod his last check. He stood in my kitchen with Steve and promised that the job would be completed that night and that he would stay as long as it took to get it done. So I wrote a check for roughly $11,000 as final payment. 20 minutes later, they were both gone the job was nowhere close to being done. They both ignored all communication from that point out. I payment on the check, fearing I had been ripped off.

That is when my nightmare began.

Within 5 days Rod had placed a lien on my house, which according to my attorney is very aggressive. The lien amount was greater than the balance owed. Apparently Rod felt he was entitled to collect on work not performed. He also added more line items to my invoice that were completely fabricated. I tried to reason with him, sending over 20 emails, and even a certified letter, but I got no response. I was however, able to communicate with his attorney, who informed me that Rod intended to try to foreclose on my house and sell it at auction (Seriously.) He tried to intimidate and badger me constantly. Rod then filed a lawsuit for yet another amount (so far the invoice, the lien, and now the lawsuit were all different amounts). I had to spend several thousand dollars on an attorney to manage the case. Rod was intentionally trying to defraud me by billing for work that was never even started, let alone completed. I had tried over 20 times to settle, sending him pictures of the work that was not done, assuming that Steve had lied to him and told him the work was finished. Rod would not even address my claims. So I filed a countersuit.

Fast forward almost a year, and Rod and I are now in court appointed mediation. Steve showed up and claimed he had proof that he did the work, which he would not produce when confronted. Rod could not produce anything that would show the work was completed. It was a total waste of time. We ended up settling on an amount that was $1000 over the undisputed amount.

All I was asking for was to only pay for work that was actually completed. This man was so stubborn that he was willing to spend $1000's of dollars on an attorney to try and intimidate me (the disputed amount was roughly $3500). I will not stand for unethical  behavior like that, and will be posting this same review across all applicable sites to make sure that people know about his ways before doing business with him.

This was the worst experience of my life. I will probably never do a renovation again. I wouldn't recommend Rod, Steve, or any associates to my worst enemy.
