The vehicle failed the test-drive but you purchased it anyway. That totally defeats the purpose of a test-drive. You could have avoided the loss and taught your son a valuable lesson in common sense shopping.

 I am aware of my responsibility and I am aware what I must do. The dealership has a responsibility not to place cars on the lot that needs to be taken to a salvage yard. That is what I am addressing with this issue. I appreciate your well thought out advice and please make me aware of all of your life decisions so I can critique if there are any flaws.

It was your responsibility to get an independent vehicle inspection from a good mechanic not associated with the dealership before you buy the vehicle. Why didn't you get the inspection? If it is as bad as your mechanic now states, then you wouldn't have purchased it and saved yourself time, money and heartache. 

When you make a big mistake, like this one, you can't just close your eyes and sing la la la. You have to own up to your mistake and fix it the right way.  You can't just return your vehicle to the dealership when there are mechanical issues.  You are responsible for getting the mechanical issues repaired. Or, just let the vehicle sit at your home until you have the money to repair it. If you paid in full for this vehicle, take it somewhere else and trade it in or sell it. 

However, if you have a loan on the vehicle you purchased, that is different. You are responsible for both the loan payments and mechanical repairs.  Returning the vehicle to the dealer doesn't cancel the contract and it doesn't extinguish the loan. You have a lot to learn about vehicles and vehicle financing. Take the time to research the right way - before you show your son anything else. Right now he is learning the exact wrong thing from you.

Used vehicles are sold AS IS unless you buy a vehicle warranty. From what I have seen, most vehicle warranty's aren't worth the paper they are printed on - read it before you buy one. You need to figure out the best way to get out of this contract - that means find a way to pay it off either by trading, by selling or by digging into your savings and paying off the loan. Research and read before you dig yourself into a deeper hole.
