AUTHOR: MovingForward - (United States of America)

A lease is a contract. That is why it is best to have a written lease for all the terms and conditions to be enumerated by both the landlord and the tenant. If you have a 12 month lease then your lease is good for the entire 12 months no matter who owns the property - as long as you are current on your payments and did not break the lease. In other words, when someone buys a property that is occupied with a tenant, the new owner has to abide by the terms and conditions of the lease that was signed by the previous owner.

Now, if the lease has ended and the tenant is month to month, then the new owner can provide a notice, per the lease, to the tenant that the lease will not be renewed and the tenant must move within X days. Usually there is a minimum of a 30 day notice required, but check the lease and the states statutes where the property is located.

So if you rented from someone and they "made you move", then you must have agreed to it in writing in your lease. If you did not agree to it in writing, then go to an attorney or take the landlord to small claims court for your damages.
