I was sold and thought I bought a replacement Warranty as it turns out the clerk entered in store repair and I missed it. I had problems with the camera working right and after 6 months and R.S. blaming everything under the sun I finally got the straight skinny from Vivitar and found the problem to be a bad card slot. When I went to R.S. for a replacement they informed me I had a carry in warranty. At which point I asked them why they thought I would buy a carry in warranty when I lived 50 miles from the closest corporate store., when I could just mail it to the manufacturer for a new camera. They said they didn't know but that was the way it was and when I informed them I would not be using their warranty which was no were close to the man. warr. They said they would refund the unused portion. To which I replied If I used the Man. Warr. then there is no used portion, needless to say I am out the 35.00 for a useless warranty.

...this report claims the clerk made a mistake. Guess it can happen. You should have read the plan before leaving the store but I guess we all can make mistakes..right? only human?

I avoid the mistake of buying any expensive merchandise from Radio Shack. So I do not have to worry about any warranty issues. There was a time when I had a use for them...like if I needed a transistor. Now you go into a Radio Shack and they don't know a transistor from a shoe. So I have no use for them anyhow. There are no shortages of places to find a better deal on a cell phone or computer or camera..and have a chance..albeit slight, of finding a sale associate that actually has product knowledge and my best interests at heart.

You are trying to confuse the issue. I was not sold what I was promised. I requested a replacement plan and the sold me a repair plan. I would drive to B.A. to pick up a replacement but only a fool would drive 50 miles $ times thats a total of 200 miles to have a camera repaired when I could simply mail it and have it back in one week. Which I did because the plan they sold me was only good for them. I was forced to choose between adding insult to injury by driving 200 miles to service a camera, or losing the 35.00 I paid for the lesson (which was less expensive the paying for a tank of gas) and never ever ever do business with such a self serving company again. One more thing . If I had read this report or one like it I would have not done business with them. If you are reading this know and choose to do business with them then you deserve what you get. I am not out for vengeance its the truth and this is just the warning I wish I had.

what are you talking about?

I didn't understand how you could not understand what I had written. I did not get the warranty I thought I was getting  it was not the replacement warranty I received I would have gladly visited the store to pick up the replacement I thought I paid for the turn around is quick and worth the expense quickly replacing my camera. What I said was they gave me the wrong warranty. Repair meant two separate trips at 100 miles a trip. and the wait for the camera to come back. Maybe it sounds like something you would do but I am much more practical with my money.  I believe any customer conscious company would recognize the mistake and correct it.  It doesnt matter to me I am a man of principle and I am not seeking compensation there is nothing they could do at this point to make me grace the doorway  of their business with as much as my shadow. Heed the warning or not that is your choice. I would say these comments to my statement seem pro like are you R. S. staff or contractor?

...a "replacement" warranty often offers the benefit of giving you a brand new item rather then you having to send it out to the manufacturer and waiting for a repair/replacement. The manufacturer often offers no warranty that says they will always replace it...they can choose to replace it or repair it.

If radio shack is going to replace it under the terms of the replacement warranty you purchased from THEM...how else would you expect this to happen other then in the store? It seems to me your complaint is based on you not understanding any of this warranty and blaming the salesperson for this.

I don't think you understand what "unused portion" means..

This is how most replacement warranties work. It is based on time.

So for a length of time you were actually using a portion of the warranty just by having it. Typically if you wish to cancel the warranty the refund is based on the amount of time left on the warranty or what is called "pro rated".

Otherwise customers could purchase a 4 year warranty and then decide to cancel it after 3 years and 364 days and expect a full refund. That won't fly. A warranty is nothing more then insurance. Would you expect a full refund from your auto extended warranty if you decided to cancel based on the fact that you never used it?

I imagine based on this report that the replacement warranty is through radio shack and not the manufacturer. I don't know why you would think they should care if you live 50 or 1000 miles from a radio shack. They just want to sell the warranty of course..they make extra profit from that. It is up to you to understand what it covers, how it works and then decide if it is right for you.

I would imagine the RS replacement warranty must have some benefits over the manufacturers (perhaps it covers the item for more time or covers other problems) so that is probably what the salesperson was informing you of. Did you actually read the warranty or just accusing blindly? Normally these run concurrent with the manufacturers warranty but then will cover what is in the terms after the manufacturers warranty expires. I would agree there would be no point to purchasing another warranty that covered nothing more and for no longer then the manufacturers.
