First I would like to say that Regency-Southgate has a beautiful campus. The campus is what really made me want to come to Regency. I started attending Regency earlier this year and in my opinion they are extremely strict. I have been sent home and unable to clock back in, because I left a worksheet at home. Regency offers 2 late passes a month, which means that you can come late to class 2 times per month, if you were late after the 2 times, then you were unable to attend or get hours for class. The Southgate campus is the only campus in the Detroit-Metro Area. Because I am a part-time student (because I worked full-time) I always had to rush to get to school. The earliest I could leave work was 4:30, I had to be to class by 5:15. There were several instances in which I was late, due to construction or weather, in which I was not allowed to come to school because I exceeded my 2 late passes for that month. I work 40 miles from the school and since this is the only school available in the area, I would think that they would let you attend school. It seems odd to me that at a 4-year college or at a job, its better to come late than not at all. At Regency, if you are late more than 2 times, regardless of the reason, you miss out on classroom or floor time. I have missed a total of 10 days because I was stuck in traffic and would have made it to Regency at 5:30 instead of 5:15. They say that they are concerned about our education, but who turns away a student and prohibits them for learning because they are 15 minutes late. There are a lot of students that take the bus to school or do not have reliable transportation and in my opinion you should be able to enter school when you get there. Late is better than not at all. I understand the importance of being punctual, but sometimes you can not control construction, weather, or car problems.

In all honesty, I can say that I learned a lot in theory to pass state boards. I think Regency is a great school for teaching theory. When it comes to hairstyling, Regency does not teach hairstyles that are in "syle"! They only teach you want you need to pass state boards. On the floor consists of the following styling techniques: pincurls, fingerwaves, perm rods, roller sets, french rolls, relaxers and color (done with cholesterol-if you didnt have a client). For the money that I paid, I thought that they would have more class time on extensions, pony-tails, haircutting, and up-do's. People don't get roller sets or perm rods that often. I have learned how to do African-American hair by watching other stylists at other salons, looking on you-tube, and buying instructional hair dvd's and books. I honestly thought I would learn current hairstyles. Once finished at Regency, I still have to go stand along with another stylist to learn how to do current hairstyles. It's ridiculous.

We get a new handbook every 2 months because the rules keep changing. We were recently told that on our 15-min breaks we could not leave the building to go to the store next door. I feel as though Regency babysits a lot and worry about petty things. At a regular college or university, you can come to class or leave when you want. Not sure why they are making all these ridculous rules. Worry about the students safety. Why we can't have a security camera installed in the parking lot because students cars were being broken into.

Again, The facility is beautiful. The people are nice. I just expected more for the price that I paid. I should have done my research.

Dear KIA,

We are pleased to hear that your sister, along with so many other people you know are currently attending REGENCY Beauty Institute! However, your compaint in regards to REGENCY Beauty Institute-Southgate lacks creditibilty entirely, due to your own admission that you have never been to this location. We find this unfortunate and hope you have the oppuritunity to visit our beautful campus sometime in the near future.

Please contact the Campus Manager at the appropriate location for any questions or concerns.

..................  "It's a great day at REGENCY!"

I haven't been to the south gate location but I have been to and know several people who have or are currently attending the flint location. I' . Sure alot has changed since 2009 when you filed this report but I will say some of the things you complain about are still happening today. My Sister is currently attending and also feels she was misled when checking into the school and yes the location here is also very nice looking. My sister had to buy alot of the things needed for class separately because the kit given contains very little for the price paid. She also feels like she has learned more from research on the internet and from the other students when it comes to updated styles and techniques.  They teach you very basic things most of which won't make you much money in a salon which is why most people choose to attend school in the first place. One of the instuctors there when blow drying my 4 year olds hair encouged her to be rough and told my daughter that a little pain results in alot of beauty. Who does that to a child? She no longer likes to get her hair done in any salon because of this. As far as people telling this young lady who made this report to change her job schedule to get to school on time must not have a real job because not all jobs will do that. The purpose for going to any school is to better yourself and when you are paying that kind of money she should be able to come to class and get credit for the time she is there. Anything missed should be on the student to get any info or notes on her own time. Apparently you don't live in the real world where things out of our control happen. Just because your experience was different does not make hers or my sisters wrong.  As with anything if you know that your circumstance  are different and they saythey will work with you get it in writing so there are no suprises later. If they cant put it in writing don't trust it.

I'm a student at the Detroit-Southgate canmpus. Things are very different now from what you have described. First, we have open clock in, but we are responsible for our attendence. If it drops below 80% or we are gone for 14 consecutive days, its termination. We already treat this as a career, though we are in school. Showing up late to your job would result in termination. Why should the school be any different? Its preparing us for the world of cosmetology. The teachers are there on time, most of the students are there are time, why should we stop what we are doing because you cannot be on time? And as the educator said, there are several campuses in Michigan. Surely you could find one closer to where you are, or work out a reasonable work schedule. Cosmetology is not about teaching you how to do all the in style hair cuts by the book. The point of cosmetology is to show your creativity. They teach you the basics, what you need to know. Its up to you to be a great hair stylist. Where would the creativity be if they made us all into cookie cutter stylists? Your education depends on you. We still cannot leave the premises on our 15 minute breaks, we have to clock out. Its a safety measure, while we are there the school is responsible for us. Yes, we are adults, but if something happens and we aren't where we are supposed to be, it falls back on the school. We don't seem to have any issue with cars being broken into, I accidently left my window down all day a few days back and came back to my car being just as I left it. The school is relatively new, so it takes time to settle everything down and get the rules in check. Now, they are concrete, and very manageable. I love this school, its very professional, the teachers are very experienced, and they book clients based on what students need. They had a problem with only getting shampoos and thermals for every client, so they now book clients that want things such as facials, waxing, perms, relaxers, etc. for most appointments and a few clients are booked for shampoos and thermals. I would highly recommend this school to anyone.

Your failing to mention...

POSTED: Saturday, September 08, 2012

First off i'd like to state that I have been with this company for two years and I have enjoyed every day of my employment with the company. Recently I was transferred to the Detroit-Southgate location for a promotion. I have heard of this sight before so I decided to do a little investigating. After reading this review on the site i was disappointed at the misleading information that was given.

Why the student would have been sent home if they did not have a worksheet: At Regency Beauty Institute, we hold our student and our staff to the highest standards of learning and teaching. If this student were to show up to work and did not have their scissors, per say, they would not make very much money that day. So why should we, as a learning institution set our student up for failure like that? And since Tina had mentioned a four year university let's take into account that if you are showing up to class without a project normally you would receive a zero on the assignment.

Not being able to clock in when your 15 minutes late: Recently we have changed the rules and you can now clock in at anytime. This does have it's drawbacks because when you are constantly late what kind of practice is that for the real world. To this day I still encourage my student to attend as often as they can and strive for 100% attendance.

This is the only campus: There are actually 5 campuses is Michigan. Flint, Detroit-lakeside, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Detroit-Southgate. Coming from a different campus I know the distance between them and it is a stretch but the student could have possibly done more research on the location. And all the campuses have been open for at least a year.

Students who take the bus to school: Surprisingly these are the students that have the best attendance and have the most desire to learn. There is also a bus stop located directly in front of the school, as if it could get any more convenient.

Not teaching trendy cuts: Students are always urged to ask questions and tell educators what they want to learn. For example, I just taught a color class on different highlight placement the other day, and a class on round brush styling.

Learning styles from YouTube: YouTube is a great way to learn styles to do any texture of hair. So if the student was so quick to research highly textured hair why did the student investigate other types? Basically what it comes down to is being empowered about your education.

Sorry for the long response, I just feel that there was a underlying reason to that post and I wanted to set some things straight

THE WHOLE ABOVE STATEMENT IS TRUE.

I ALSO FILED A REPORT ON THIS CAMPUS.

THANKS FOR BEING HONEST - THE ONLY PRO I'VE HEARD HOWEVER IS THAT THE FACILITY IS GORGEOUS AND IT IS....BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD LEARN MORE AS WELL. WHATS WORTH MORE THE IMAGE OR WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING INSIDE THE FACILITY?
