How crazy. in 50 years of living, I have never been charged a fee to get my money out of a bank. My mom taught me to use a bank checking account to safeguard my money. I do not bank at Regions and that is the problem. I  have been in this branch of regions in Clarksville Arkansas at leasty 10 times in past 12 months cashing checks written to me by others for work I have performed. The checks were drawn on Regions bank, there was always suffient funds to cover the checks and the checks were cashed with no problem. Today I December 2011 I went in to cash a check for 65 dollars drawn on Regions Bank. Signed the check and presented my Arkansas Drivers License, only to be told by the teller that there was a fee to cash a check for a non bank member. But if I opened an account with Regions they would not charge me the fee. I asked the teller and asst manager how long this policy was in effect and they said for ever, Amazing, in that I have never been charged by Regions before.  This is beyond crazy. Their customer is charged a check fee by Regions, Their customer writes me a check because they do not have cash to pay me and they want a record of the payment. Now regions charges me a fee to get my money out of the bank????? Regions collects fees from their account holder, Regions draws interest on the money their customer has in the bank that they loan out to others, and then Regions charges me to get my money that my customer owes me??  It is amazing that everytime that you go into  Regions they ask you to open an account. But when I tell them I am quite happy with the bank I use, they seem upset. Now they want to charge me because I will not open an account with them., My solution will be to not accept checks written on Regions Bank.

Baa Baa!

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

"i still and will never believe that banks have a right to impose a fee to cash a check drawn on funds in thier bank "

Believe what you want.   I have a neighbor who believes that electricity should be free.  His logic is that the electrons moving through the wires belong to everyone, not the electric company.

Check cashing is a service.  It involves some work for processing, but overall it involves a level of risk to the institution that cashes the check.   Your own bank will do it for free because they know where they can go to get paid if the check turns out to be bad.  A bank where you are not a customer does not, so they assume some risk by taking the check and handing over cash.   The fee that you pay covers that risk.

As I said above, it's your choice.  You can choose to cash the check at your bank for free, or you can choose not to accept a check as payment (as is becoming more common).

oh ye of little faith.  that is the problem with our society today, we accept things at face value and do not question why? when social securiy first started on the ss card it clearly stated not for identificaiton puproses. now that statement is gone from the cards. ever tried to do anything without a ss card. ever stop and tell the casheir no, when they ask for your phone number or zip code at the check out stand in some stores? simply because banks charge a fee does not make it right/ why should i pay a fee to cash a check at your bank when you have written me the check, the bank is protecting your money not mine. you owed me 100 dollars and paid me with a check, now i go to your bank to cash it and i only get 95 dollars because of the bank fee. ummm. is there some law in this society that states i must have checking account? so now i refuse to accept your check and you can find someone else to do the work and they will charge you 105 dollars to cover the check fee from your bank.  when does this stop? once again i state what would happen in the us govt charged everyone 10 cents for using a one dollar bill every time they use one? umm,. sounds like taxes to me.  oh well, difference of views, i still and will never believe that banks have a right to impose a fee to cash a check drawn on funds in thier bank. as for my going to three different banks with my daughter, my wife and i bank 30 miles away where we started our account 6 years ago when we moved into this area.  i wanted our daughter to have an account where she could walk to the bank. unfortunately our bank does not have a branch in our neighborhood.

Life is too short to fight a battle that can't be won

AUTHOR: coast - (USA)

Why waste your time cashing a check? It makes more sense to go to your own bank to make a deposit at the drive-through, ATM or night depository versus parking, going inside, standing in line and presenting identification.

You can fight it or move on. Life is too short to fight a battle that can't be won.

You've taught...

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Why did you have to take your daughter to 3 banks of her choice?  Was any of them your bank that you think is so great?  After all if your bank is this great where they don't charge these fees why not have your daughter stick with your bank?

I accept a check based on the strength of the customers reputation and the strength of the bank. a check states a few things, that properly completely, the bank will honor the check with US currency if there is sufficient funds in the account and it is signed by the account holder
- You may accept a check based on all of that, but the bank doesn't know you because you are not their customer.

nowhere on the check does it say, they will charge you a fee to cash that check or that I must deposit it into another bank to avoid that
fee.

-  You seem really concerned about what the check says.  Well let's expand out your logic.  You had no problem showing them your ID.  So where on the check does it state that you must show your ID to cash it?

See the point yet?  You can believe what ever you want, and be "selective" in what you want to believe.  But the fact is that you are not a customer and they have a right to charge you this fee.  If you don't want to be charged this fee then deposit the check in your bank and take all of the risk that it is a valid check.

Missing the point.

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

Banks provide check cashing services for their customers without a fee.   You are not a Regions customer.  You are not entitled to free services.   While you state that you have an account at another bank, you feel that you shouldn't have to cash your checks there (where it would be free).   Did your mother teach you common sense?   Cash your checks at the bank where it is free.

Your views on how things should work have no bearing on this issue.  We're telling you how they actually work.    You can kick and scream all you like and it's not going to change.   Check cashing is a service and you are likely to be charged for that service everywhere but a bank where you have an account.

mom taught all

AUTHOR: raymond - (United States of America)

indeed, mom did teach me how to fill out a deposit slip, just as I have taught my kids. i recently took my 15 year old to open a bank account, her first. went to three banks, of her choice, until we found one that would not charge her a fee to use a debit card and had the widest atm's in the area.

as for the deposit slip. you are missing the point. must we do what financially institutions want us to do? what good is money if banks compel us to keep it in their banks? I accept a check based on the strength of the customers reputation and the strength of the bank. a check states a few things, that properly completely, the bank will honor the check with US currency if there is sufficient funds in the account and it is signed by the account holder. nowhere on the check does it say, they will charge you a fee to cash that check or that I must deposit it into another bank to avoid that fee. you write checks to avoid paying cash or having cash on your person. if the banks charge a fee and that fee continually goes up then sooner or later the price you pay for something with a check will go up. do the math. when you write a check to someone do you tell them, by the way my bank is going to charge  you to cash that check unless you deposit it into your own bank account? when a person accepts a check from you they should be able to take it to your bank and get the face value of that check in us currency - that means without a fee.

fees stil absurd

AUTHOR: raymond - (United States of America)

thanks for your input. however, i have checked with our bank and they do not charge non customers a fee to cash a check drawn on their bank.`but in answer to your question, in my bank did, i would swicth banks. the reason that banks can charge these fees is simply because people continue to pay the fees and let the banks charge the fees. if account holders switch their accounts to a bank that does not charge this fee, or other excessive fees, banks would stop charging them. a matter of supply and demand and loss of business. similar to atm fees, most people look for banks that have low or no atm fees and the atm fees have dropped over the years. what would happen in the us government starting charging a fee to use a 20 dollar bill? umm.  To me that is the same as a bank charging me a fee to get money that someone gives me in the form of a check drawn against funds in their bank. as to the bank taking a risk - we live in a community of less than 10000 people. pretty much everyone knows everyone. moreover, that is why they have signature cards to veriy the authenticity of a check, and of course the old fashion phone call to the account holder to verify that they issued the check. then, what if I do not have a checking account, should i have to give the bank some of my hard earned money simply to get paid for my services? when do the fees stop? How about a fee for using a restroom at a rest stop? a fee to go into a store to shop? checking accounts were created so that people would not have to carry cash and risk theft or loss of money. banks operated for years with a profit without charging a fee to cash a check, so why now? I can understand a fee to cash a check drawn on a bank not their own, but a fee to cash a check drawn on their own bank, that is still plain silly in my mind.

"My mom taught me to use a bank checking account to safeguard my money."

Did she also teach you how to fill out a deposit slip so you can deposit funds into your own account?

Anyone else notice?

AUTHOR: voiceofreason - (United States of America)

A big green Regions Bank ad displayed on the right side of the page while reading this report.

I guess any publicity is good publicity to a bank.

Evidently you preferred getting such checks cashed at Regions to avoid the standard check hold on the funds had you deposited them into your own account. Most banks do charge these fees, although I feel they ought to be prevented from doing so for checks drawn on their own bank.

While I can't specifically say when Regions started charging a Check Cashing fee, if they are like other banks it has been several years.   So if this is the first time you were charged consider yourself fortunate that you have been able to save being charged those fees up until now.

Now this is a pretty standard fee charged by most banks.  In fact you need to go ask your bank if they charge a fee to Non-Customers.  You may be quite surprised as to the answer.  So here is a question for you.  If you found out that your bank charges a fee would you then no longer accept checks from your bank as well?  Or would that be okay because YOU don't get charged a fee.

You are not their customer, but are taking up time of the bank staff.  Their customer is paying service fees, but those fees do not include cashing their checks for non-customers.  If anything that would be a RipOff because if their customer writes checks and no one ever cashes the checks at the bank they are just throwing the money away on a service that is never used.  So the banks have moved this fee to the people that actually use it.

In addition you are also putting the risk of the check on the bank in case it does come back bad and they can't collect on it.  Yes even IF they cash a check on their accounts it does not guarantee that it is a valid check.  So reguardless of how much you "know" that the check is good or how many other checks you have cashed.  The fact is they don't know you from the con-artist who is standing in line behind you.

There are ways to avoid this fee, the easiest is of course to deposit the check in YOUR account.  So why don't you do that?
