Watch out -- for several thousand dollars you will be fitted with a one size fits all approach, and the staff will not let you schedule with doctor beyond initial visit, if you request him to again confirm you are on the right track. All you get after initial visit are adjustments from his assistant. In my case I felt we were using the wrong approach, as my neck and shoulders were in far worse pain, before we started.  When I finally became rude to the staff enough to get an appointment with the Dr., I had to wait a month to see him, and when I did see him, he kept me waiting over an hour, and then barged in aggressively because he didn't want to invest more time on a redo. He was threatening, sitting about 2 feet from me, staring at me aggressively while he fired off many questions to try to prevent me from changing the direction he was going with the brace, frankly the thought crossed my mind to call my husband and have him talk to him, he was extremely intimidating.  Having had TMJ for over 25 years, I know a little about my problem and have used many types of braces. He started to refer me to an orthodontist, then agreed to keep it overnight and work on it a bit. He already had $2,400 paid up front, and basically wanted me to go away.

During our exchange, he basically called me a liar, that I never brought my old brace in to see him, because he didn't put it in his notes. Be assured, I brought in the two different braces I had used in the past. One of them I had great success with, and he failed to even note it in his records. He also had a typographical error in his report, "right" versus "left" side of jaw.... I came in the second day to pick up brace, again he kept me waiting 1.5 hours. When he came into the office, he was still extremely stern and angry, while we discussed the brace.  I was expecting a 2 part brace, and he only provided one piece, stating that he did not "do" the kind of brace that helps me the most, 2 parts. As we talked and talked, he continued to become more angry and argumentative with me, and shockingly aggressive in my face, then he finally stood up and said "sit here I will get you a refund" and marched off like a kid in a temper tantrum. He told his assistant and wife to refund me only on the brace, and I threw a bit of a fit when I saw the check, they were going to charge me $505 for visits and adjustments to a brace that made my pain worse, did not allow me to see the doctor early in the process, it was an outrage. Finally his assistant fully refunded all my funds. At least we have that, but the wasted time, and extra pain I could have done without.

Bottom line is this, this doctor is unprofessional, needs anger management, he needs to retire. No wonder the staff doesn't want him to interact with patients.  Do youself a favor and do not go to this doctor. There are others in the DFW area that can do this work. Advise you to get in writing what services will be performed for the dollars, and make sure they will fix or adjust the brace according to your pain.

As a long-time TMJ patient, I sympathize with Sally Green of Plano.

However, my experience with Dr. Richard Riggs has been completely opposite from hers. My problems began over 30 years ago with a botched crown that was put on my lower molar. The toothaches, headaches, jaw pain, and facial sensitivity increased after each attempt to correct the problem.

I've lost count of the procedures and devices that compounded the original problem and intensified my chronic pain. I even submitted to jaw surgery...a major mistake. None of those dentists offered a financial adjustment.

In desperation, I began a search for a TMJ specialist who could help me live a normal life. Dr. Riggs has performed several miracles on my jaw joints and teeth. He and his staff ensure that my special needs will be met at the earliest possible time.

If I need a different specialist, he recommends only professionals who have worked with all the complexities that TMJ patients bring as patients. And he provides specific insturctions for the procedures.

Dr. Riggs is the kindest, most compassionate dentist I've ever met. His staff is both efficient and supportive; they are a reflection of the caring environment that he has created. I do hope Sally Green of Plano will find her miracle maker soon; Dr. Richard Riggs is and will continue to be mine!
