We contacted Robertsdale Air Conditioning and Heating to repair our unit on April 5, 2010 when it began freezing up. They sent out technician Nick who told us what we had already told them was wrong that we had a freon leak. He claimed that he repaired the leak. He also told us the coils were rusting and would need to be replaced. For 2 units of freon to be placed in our unit we were charged $58.40 for the first pound of freon and $26.00. One pound of freon is only $22.00, yet they charged us almost triple for 1 pound. We were also quoted 1620.00 to replace the rusting coils. Another $80.00 would buy us a brand new air conditioning unit.

On May 6, 2010 our ac went out yet again. We called Longs heating and ac and found out quickly why it went out. Because of Nicks inadequate training or perhaps it was a ploy to milk more money out of us we had to pay another 148.10 to repair his screw up. After placing the freon in our unit Nick placed the compactor on wrong causing our fan blades to move in the wrong direction. This in turn not only caused us to have a outrageous power bill due to the high amount of power it took to keep our home cool as we were having 80+ degree weather, and high humidity, but also almost caused us to have to buy a brand new unit. The compactor was close to blowing. The compactor had to be replaced because it should be indented in on the top not expanded out like a coke can that had been left in the freezer entirely to long. Had we not noticed the fan outside was not working properly (sucking in air from the top of the unit instead of blowing air out the top) the compactor could have exploded causing more damage, possible fire, and could have cost us to have to purchase a brand new air conditioning unit.

Numerous calls to the company landed no results. They never had a technician return our call despite our numerous attempts to get a call back. We tried to call numerous times, yet noone ever returned our calls. Their secretary is a joke. Her fake faulty promises of having a technician return our calls, the ever missing business owner who never works, and their inadequately trained technicians has caused us to think twice before ever hiring another company out of the phone book again.

They rip off their customers by charging outrageous prices, but also improperly replace parts back where they belong to try to get themselves more business.

HVAC Opinion

AUTHOR: BobWeAddaBabyEetsABoy - (USA)

I am not affiliated in any way with the above named company, I'm just an ex-HVAC technician/supervisor
Well I guess i would like to start off with a few questions.

1) You refer to "Nick's" Training as being inadequate.....What do you have to show the extent of his training/experience in the HVAC industry?

2)Have you requested quotes from other companies for condenser coil replacement?
If so what were their bids?

3) Do you understand the cost of "freon"?
Obviously as with any business it's not a "sell it for what we buy it for" market. Yes $22 may be the cost of the "freon" but there is a profit margin on everything you buy.

(Typically a rule of thumb in HVAC is 100% mark-up, this means if the company paid $10 for a part you will pay $20, That's just the way it is.)

Freon is a copyrighted name by Dupont for the chemicals used in HVAC. It is a very broad and generic term. You need to be more specific and use the correct description.

Was it R-22 or R-410a? those are the two "coolants" used for air conditioning in most residential applications. Further more about the cost of R-22 (because more than liikely thats what you have if you were considering a replacement unit), R-22 contains
CFC's (chloroFluroCarbons) which as known depletes the O-Zone layer (this is why just one offense for releasing "freon" into the air and not properly recovering it poses a
fine of $10,000 or more). In the past 3 years I have watched R-22 Over triple in price, why you ask. Because the EPA has required now that no more R-22 systems can be sold (parts and refrigerants are still available) but by the year 2020 (I believe this year is correct) the EPA has intentions of R-22 being obsolete and no longer in production what-so-ever, so every year the price of R-22 increases, to discourage repair of R-22 units. This is the same reasoning behind the federal tax credits for new HVAC systems with High S.E.E.R. (seasonal energy efficiency rating) ratings, R-410a (Puron) is an O-Zone "friendly" R-22 replacement (still has the same fine as listed above for improper recovery). These new R-410a systems are highly recommended especially by myself because the reductions in your monthly power bills are very noticeable.

Now with all the information I have provided you I would also like to state this. I'm not justifying anything the company did after the possibility that they cause more damage to your unit. But I will say the capacitor (not compactor) more than likely wasn't re-installed incorrectly. The only way a Condensing fan motor (if 208v-230v) will run "backwards" is if the reversing leads or polarity is incorrectly connected (polarity not the issue because 208v-230v motors only have 2 "hot" leads and a ground). Given the condensing fan was indeed running backwards because air should be pulled in the sides and out the top of the system.

I do indeed agree with you on the bad service of this company because initial business is not key especially in HVAC it is maintaining a long lasting relationship with customers. They should have done everything in their power to make this right with you. I have been in your position as a consumer before because HVAC is a very good profession to be in but on the other hand, the reasons you have written this report is the exact reasons I am no longer involved with my previous employer. His ethics were not up to par with mine, I believe in making profit absolutely but I would much rather have customer loyalty and a good reputation as opposed to saying "Let's get all we can now and hopefully they'll call us again." So believe me I understand your frustration in this entire situation. I totally empathize with you on the bad customer service and post-sale service of the above mentioned company. And mostly I hope your issue is resolved.

First I have to say, how can you tell in 24 hours that your electric bill was, and I quote caused us to have an outrageous power bill due to the high amount of power it took to keep our home cool. From May 5th to May 6th your bill was outrageous. Do you pay your electric bill every 24 hours?

You have already contacted the company that screwed up the first time and they gave you the runaround. You should get a statement from the company that fixed it and have them list everything the first company did wrong and sue them in small claims court. Make sure you have everything you need to prove the company messed up youre A/C unit and sue them.
