On Oct 6, 2016 I came across a car I was interested in on ebay. The sellers contact information was on the ad, so I called the Seller. The dealer was Classic Rover located in Cream ridge NJ. I spoke to Alex, one of the owners and asked him if there were any problems with the car, he told me the car had no problems and was ready to go. I then asked him if there were any warning lights lit up on the instrument cluster, again he assured me there were no problems and no lights on, everything works. The ad also stated the dealer did a complete brake job, oil change and installed a new muffler.

We agreed on a price which included shipping the car to FL, and he instructed me to go to his website roverclassic.com to put a deposit on the car through paypal. Then he wanted me to wire the entire amount of the car to his bank of america account. He said once I deposit the entire amount into his account, then he would refund my $500 deposit through pay pal. This raised a flag with me, and when I asked him why he doesn't complete the transaction through ebay, he stated that ebay charges too much. So I put the $500 deposit through paypal on his rover classic web site.

I called Alex back and explained to him that I would be going to NY on Oct 16th and would drive to NJ to where the car was, to test drive and inspect the car, and if everything was good with the car, I would complete the transaction and pay the balance of the car off right there. He said ok.

On Oct 17, I drove to NJ to inspect the car, upon arriving I asked for Alex, I was told he was not there and that his partner would show me the car. The guy grabbed a plate and the keys and headed to the car. first thing I noticed was the convertible top wasn't fitting securely and pointed it out. He said he could fix that, no problem. Then he lifts the cars hood up and connected the battery cable to the battery, this was odd as well. Then I put my foot on the brake and the pedal went almost to the floor, again I pointed this out to the guy. I then started the car and once running, I noticed the airbag light continued to flash. I told the guy that I had specifically asked alex if there were any warning lights on, and was told there wasn't. Then I turned the A/C on to see if it worked properly, the A/C turned on, but didn't blow cold air, I again pointed that out to the guy. I drove the car about a mile up the road and found the brakes barely working and making noise. I returned the car and noticed a odor of something burning, the guy said it was probably engine paint. To me, it smelled like brake fluid might be leaking onto something hot. I told the guy I did not want the car because it was not a described, and to tell Alex I wanted my deposit back.

While on my way back to NY Alex called me and told me he would replace the master cylinder for the brakes as well as put more freon in for the A/C, and he would take $200 off the price of the car. I told him that he had an 11 day notice that I was coming to personally inspect the car and that it should have been in top shape and ready to go like he told me.  I told Alex that according to the description on ebay, the car had a complete brake job, if this was the case, the brakes should have been operating properly and not in need of a master cylinder. As for the A/C, if the car needs freon, more than likely there is a leak somewhere and just replacing the freon is only going to last until it leaks out again.

I put a claim in with paypal, but was denied my refund due to their policy of not offering buyer protection on automobiles. I was able to get my deposit refunded through my bank, which I am very fortunate.

Buyer beware, stay clear of doing business with this dealer, there are numerous complaints against them.
