Every person I have seen in this town of Haysi, VA that have had either a Tracfone or a Safelink phone have been cheated out of their minutes. It's supposed to take 1/3 a unit to send a text but Safelink/ Tracfone have been charging people a whole unit a text. This really adds up if you have a Safelink phone and it's your emergency government granted phone. I've tried to help any friend I've noticed that's had this issue (everyone that lived in town) but it literally takes hours and sometimes days to sort this issue out with each phone. And Tracfone becomes really pricy even though it is well know to be the poor man's phone but in an area with no unlimited long distance it's a big deal. Most people are oblivous to what is happening and because of an issue regarding lack of internet in the area most people do not speak up about it. Home phones in this area are super expensive and the people here are down trodden and poor. It's a sad sight to see all these companies take advantage of them because they can.
