Safeway advertises many popular products as buy one get one free, as well as buy "X" # for "Y"$. A trusting person would assume that if one only needed a single of any of these items, they would get the pro-rated discount price. This however is not the case. For the buy one get one free offer, if you only want a single item you will be charged double the amount (i.e., not 1/2 the buy one get one free price). For the buy "X" #" for "Y" $ circumstance  you will be charged the full price for each item unless you buy "X" items.

I find this practice deceptive. In fact, if you confront an employee or manager about this, they will discount your bill, but who really has the time or ability to do this every time they shop there. This is an obvious way for safeway to make more money from consumers. I for one am very tired of being ripped off by this store and do my best to shop elsewhere, but There are literally millions of consumers who are being overcharged in this way - amounting to millions of dollars in additional profit for the Safeway corp.

How is it deceptive?

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 30, 2012

If the item is BUY ONE GET ONE FREE.... then it is BUY ONE (1) ITEM AT REGULAR RETAIL PRICE AND GET A SECOND (2) ITEM FREE. Does the sign say anywhere on it that you can purchase one (1) item at half price? No? Then yuo can't do it. You are making assumptions that because they are buy one get one that you SHOULD be able to get one for half off. That's not what the sign says though.

As for Buy X for Y price, the sign says BUY X FOR Y PRICE. It doesn't say buy 1 for a reduced price. You are again making an assumption that if something is 2/$1.00 that one item is in fact 50 cents. It doesn't claim that one item is 50 cents anywhere on the sign. The sign claim that the items are 2/$1.00

This is pretty standard in the industry. The idea is to get the consumer to buy more than one item which will increase sales at the store. The store is willing to give you a reduced price if you purchase more of the items. Have you ever heard of buying in bulk? Things typically get cheaper the more you buy of an item. This applies to a grocery store too. they aren't being deceptive, yuo do get the item for that price if you buy the number of items required. You really do get the second one free if you buy one. They really are giving you a deal. Why would they bother advertising something as 3/$5.00 if they didn't want you to buy three? I know where I live many of these signs also state "or one at regular price"

That is not deceptive

"This is an obvious way for safeway to make more money from consumers."  Yes, that's usually why a business runs a special (also known as a sale price).

"I find this practice deceptive."  It's not deceptive unless they fail to honor the buy one-get one free offer.  "millions of consumers who are being overcharged"

You are not being overcharged unless they charge you for the second item.

How many consumers do you think thought otherwise?

AUTHOR: Matthew Hickey - (United States of America)

I'll bet there are literally thousands who would think otherwise. The fact remains, this is a deceptive practice - legal or not, Safeway is making a killing on this.

No rip off here

This is standard procedure in the grocery/c-store buisness. You have a reading comprehension problem. The item is buy 1 get 1 free. Its not buy 1 at half off get a second one at half off or even buy 1 item at half off. Its BUY 1 GET 1 FREE. You are trying to read more in to it than is there. Now if they refuse to give you the second one free, you would have a complaint. Question: If you have a coupon for a free sub at subway when you buy a sub, do you think you should be able to use that couple for just 1 half price sub since you dont want two subs?

As for the rest, If a company advertises something is say buy 3 for 5$, then the sale is BUY 3 FOR 5$ the sign doesnt say you can buy 1 for $1.67. If the sale was 1 for $1.67 then that's what the sign would say. Instead it clearly says the sale is 3 for $5

No ripoff here.
