This is a copy of an email that I sent today to Captains Tony Bowers and Brianne Bowers (who are in charge of the North Platte Salvation Army Family Store).

"About a month ago I purchased a 2003 Mazda Protege from the Salvation Army Family Store here in North Platte. I paid $1,500 for this car and have since found out that the engine is junk. It was running rough when I bought it and Randy (the manager) told me that it was probably a simple fix. About a week after I bought the car I spent $100 on a new battery from Walmart because the original battery died. It has been burning oil ever since I bought it and blowing blue smoke out the tail pipe. I bought some engine and oil cleaners from Walmart but that did not help. Last week I took it to Ellett's Automotive on 11th St and they said it was misfiring on cylinder one. I spent $200 on repairs at Ellett's only to be told that the engine needs to be replaced. In other words, I was sold a junk vehicle! I demand a refund of my money! I want the $1,500 back that I paid for this vehicle and you can have your junk vehicle back!"

I have also talked to Randy who is the store manager and told him that I wanted a refund of my money.

Additional Information - Captain Tony Bowers responds to my email

POSTED: Thursday, April 28, 2016

I received this response today from Captain Tony Bowers:

Sir,

I am sorry that it has taken a day to get back to you, but I have been looking at our options.

First, you need to understand we are not obligated in any way to reimburse you the cost of the vehicle, as you were told at time of purchase that it was sold "as is" and it has been over a 3 weeks since you bought the vehicle. Secondly, you have already made changes to the vehicle, and there is no way we can verify those changes or how they impacted the car itself.

I am sorry about this inconvenience.

Blessings,

Anthony Bowers
Captain

I then sent Captain Tony Bowers the following email:

You need to understand that the so-called "changes" to the vehicle were necessary to try to keep the car running. I changed out the battery for a brand new one from Walmart on 4/9/2016 because the old battery died a week after I bought the car. That can be verified by checking my receipt and by looking under the hood of the car.

Ellett's Automotive ran diagnostic testing on 4/18/2016 to try to locate the major problem of shaking and hesitating and they ended up changing out the spark plugs because someone put the wrong type of spark plugs in the car. That can be verified by checking my receipt and/or calling Ellett's Automotive.

These so-called "changes" helped the car to run better but did not solve the major problem that this car had before I purchased it.

After taking a trip down to Salina, Kansas and back, I took the car to Ellett's Automotive a second time on 4/21/2016 for more diagnostic testing since it gave us more trouble on the trip. Ellett's Automotive concluded that the car has a permanent misfire in cylinder one. That can be verified by checking my receipt and/or calling Ellett's Automotive. Dave (the owner of Ellett's Automotive) told me that the engine needs to be replaced! That also can be verified by checking my receipt and/or calling Ellett's Automotive.

Selling something "as is" does not give you or anyone else the right to charge an outrageous price for a junk vehicle especially when you probably already knew it was junk! That car has a tendency to die out while crossing an intersection if it sits too long at a stop light!

You, sir, are a dishonest crook! I would like to have the contact information for your superior officer (whoever that might be). I deserve a refund and you are not going to get away with ripping me off! You say that Salvation Army helps people. Well, you hurt my family big time by selling us a junk car!
