While looking for a job in late 2010, I came across the opportunity to install DirecTV as a subcontractor. I was promised the world and told that I would stay very busy. This was the case initially. But soon enough there were weeks where I was given only one job.

Receivers are consigned to each technician. They are treated as if they will spoil, though. They must be either activated or returned in 7 days or you are charged the full retail price for the receiver. And the report is 2 days behind, but you are charged instantly. This gives you only 5 days. When you have to travel 80 miles one way to pick up the equipment, this can get costly.

If a customer calls in to DirecTV for any reason at all you will be charged $20. And then you will be sent back to the job and not be paid for it. The cause for this is almost exclusively faulty equipment, not faulty installation.

The list goes on and on. The most senior technician with SBG Digital in Greenville has been there about a year. I wonder why?

Early in 2011, Barry Garnes - who owns SBG Digital - decided he wanted to hold a $1500 retainer back on everyone and began taking 10% out of everyone's checks until the $1500 was accrued. Due to the lack of work and completely anti-family friendly environment, I decided to end my contract. I was notified that since my retainer was not at $1500, they would be holding just under $1400 for 90 more days!

So, now I have 2 options. One, I can wait out my 90 days and let everyone know how terrible the company is to work for, or Two, I can get a lawyer and wait longer than 90 days to get the money and give the lawyer a third of it. It is a lose-lose situation for anyone and everyone except Barry Garnes!
