I was interested in adopting a dog so I stopped at Shake a Paw in Union NJ. I saw just the cutest puppy in the world and had to have him. Shake a Paw now does adoptions (which is the owners latest scam) the puppy was just under $500. When you adopt you sign something stating if the dog gets sick you have few options, bring the dog back, get your money back, or get another dog of same or lesser value. Anyone who loves animals is not going to just bring the dog back, he is not an appliance! I was told the dog was healthy come to find out that was not true at all. I am going to explain what happened in a second but have to say this man should be ashamed of himself because he knows exactly what he is doing!

First I want to say that I recently had to put my 15 year old dog to sleep so me and my 5 year old son weren't anticipating or prepared to deal with what we endured. I brought my 3month old puppy, who I named Duke home at about 8pm. The next day he was gasping as if he had something stuck in his throat. I took him to the vet and it turned out he had pneumonia. Had I waited much longer he would have died. This poor dog was in serious distress.

I made a visit to Shake a Paw to speak to the owner (Jeff) he showed absolutely no compassion and showed me the contract I signed and said we can care for him here. ( ummmm I don't think so Jeff) Duke needed around the clock care so I had to put him in the hospital which cost me about $3000. As far as the contract goes, I would say I understand if he got sick down the road but it was 48 hours later and you don't develop pneumonia over night. I told him I needed more information on where the dog came from and he refused to give me any. I let him know I would be having a lawyer contact him and he very sarcasticly said, ok.

i went to the veterinarian that actually sees all the dogs once a week there and she was more than willing to write me a letter stating the dog was unfit for purchase! The day I went to pick up the letter there was a dog in her office from Shake a Paw the had passed within 20 minutes of being at her office.

I'm a very understanding person and know dogs get sick, this is the first time I'm taking action against anyone who has done me wrong but this guy needs to be stopped and as soon as possible. I am currently looking for a lawyer, just not sure what kind of lawyer I need because that contract should be null and void since I have an unfit for sale certificate.

Duke is recovering slowly but I can't help but to wonder what would have happened to him had I not adopted him. Please do not buy or adopt a dog from any of this mans stores, he owns the one in Greenbrook as well.
