I just visited my daughter last evening, March 19, 2002, at the Maricopa County Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, after she had just undergone emergency surgery to remove her spleen. She had fallen from her top bunk at Estrella Jail. Within a couple hours, she began asking for medical attention, as her condition progressively got worse. She was in a great deal of pain and was unable to breathe properly.

As her condition readily got worse and worse she continued to ask for help but was told there was nothing they could do and there was nothing medically wrong with her. She eventually made a written request to be seen by the Doctor and again was told there was nothing medically wrong with her.

Five days after her fall, she was lying flat on her back on her bunk unable to move from the tremendous pain, and sneezed. Her spleen ruptured and she began bleeding internally. Again, she asked and finally begged for medical attention, but each time was refused. At this point she was unable to lie down so she to kneel on her bunk.

Finally, the Med Nurse noticed she was jaundice and her abdomen was distended, so they transported her to Maricopa County Medical Center where they did a CAT scan, which confirmed she was bleeding internally and had lost an enormous amount of blood. Her blood level was critically low. Her spleen had ruptured and needed to be removed.

Before operating, the medical staff asked her to sign the necessary papers and explained that because of her weak condition surgery would be very risky. She asked if she could call her parents, and/or her 7-year-old son before she went into surgery but the officer refused her permission. The surgeon who removed her spleen told her he could not believe she was alive.

They had to make a 12-inch incision down the front center of her chest. I counted 28 staples about 1/2 inch apart on the incision when I visited her last evening through a glass window. A police officer stood nearby during our entire 30-minute visit.

During our visit, she told me they were going to return her to the jail that same day with her staples still exposed and transport her back to the hospital to remove them only one day later. She told me that she begged them to allow her to have the staples removed before she would be returned to the jail. She was having difficulty walking with the staples in the incision and was in a great deal of pain when she moved.

My daughter no longer has her spleen. If she had received the medical help she needed and for which she asked for directly after her fall, she would still have her spleen. It wasn't until five days later, when she sneezed, that her spleen ruptured. If she had received proper care immediately, she would not have lost her spleen.

Additionally, the only reason I knew what had happened to her was because I had called the general inmate "jail information" number to confirm her "housing" information so I could send her a letter the next day. I also had planned to visit her on her next visitation day. I was given a different housing code than the code she had been originally assigned when she was incarcerated. I continued to stay on the phone to confirm she still had her three thirty-minute visits available for this week to plan my visit. After the visit availability was confirmed, I dialed "O" to speak to a person to ask the location of the new housing code I was given.

After over an hour and a half on hold, a "person" answered, and I was told my daughter was at "Maricopa County Detention Ward". I then asked for a physical address because I had not heard of this County Jail before. After being put on hold a couple more times, the person I had been speaking to said, "Your daughter has been transported to the hospital". I asked her why, what was wrong with her, or what happened to her. I wanted to know why had I not been notified. She replied, "The family is not notified unless the condition is serious". I then made the comment to her that knowing the jail had a medical facility within itself; I would assume they would only transport an inmate to the County Hospital if their condition were serious.

I was not aware yet, but MY DAUGHTER HAD EMERGENCY SURGERY, AND THEY REFUSED TO LET HER CONTACT HER FAMILY!!!!! This doesn't sound like America.... this sounds like Poland,...1941.

In addition, I was getting this information on Sunday night, March 17th. At the same time I was getting this information from the jail information people, my daughter was in ICU and would remain in intensive care for two more days. Instead of contacting me of her condition, they tell me they only contact family if the condition is serious.

Next, I asked her who I could speak to that could tell me the purpose of her trip to the hospital. I was told that information was not available from anyone. I insisted I be allowed to find out the medical condition of my daughter, and then was told to call the hospital and was given the number.

The hospital told me there was no one there with my daughter's name. I explained she was incarcerated and was an inmate at Estrella Jail. She checked again, and confirmed she was not at Maricopa County Medical Center. So, I asked her if she would transfer me to anyone in the Detention Center. She transferred my call and I spoke to an Officer who told me even if she was there, they were not allowed to give out any information.

I'm afraid my frustration and emotions got the best of me and I burst into tears. I pleaded with the officer and asked him if he would just confirm if she was there and if she was alive. He checked and came back to the phone and reported she was there but not in the Detention Ward. She was in intensive care. He said that she had been in surgery and had to have her spleen removed. I asked if she was in stable condition and he told me he couldn't give me any information. I again, pleaded with him, explaining that as her Mother, I simply needed to know what her medical condition was. He finally told me she had fallen at the Estrella Jail and ruptured her spleen and it had to be removed. I immediately asked if I could speak to some medical person at the hospital to learn her condition and was told, "No." I asked if there was anyone I would be able to speak to that could tell me anything about her condition. He told me to call the next day and speak to Sergeant Levi in the Detention Ward.

I called the next day and asked for Sergeant Levi. I asked if I could speak with anyone to get a medical opinion of her condition and was told, "No." He said he could tell me she was in the Surgery department in intensive care and was stable and seemed to be in good spirits. He told me when she became stable enough, she would be moved to the Detention Ward of the hospital. I asked him if I would be allowed to visit her at the hospital and he told me, "Yes," explaining visiting hours were from 6 to 8 PM. I then asked if the same "visitation" rules applied at the Medical Center, being three 30-minute visits each week, and was told they were a little more lenient at the Medical Center. I told him then that I would visit the very next evening.

When we, (my husband and I) got to the Detention Ward, we signed in, gave them our Arizona Driver's licenses and were told to wait. I was expecting to be sent to a room where I would find my daughter lying in a bed, but instead in just a couple of minutes, my daughter hobbled into a room across from where we were waiting and stood in front of a glass window. We then had to communicate through a speaker to have our conversation.

We were promptly asked to leave after 30 minutes was up, which included about a 10-minute period of time when my daughter was rushed out of the room because her right fore arm doubled in side as we stood talking. Both my husband and I thought the instant swelling appeared to be a blood clot in her arm.

While she was gone from the visit I had to ask the officer what was happening but was told that I would have to sit and wait. About 10 minutes later, my daughter hobbled back to the visit window with an ace bandage wrapped around the area that was swollen and a big ice bag on top of it. She said she was told it was a muscle spasm, they rubbed it and wrapped it and put the ice pack on it. We continued our visit, and approximately ten minutes later were told our time was up.

As we said goodbye, my daughter shared with us that she had no idea if she was returning to Estrella or going to the State Prison from there, but understood she would be unable to contact us for 4 or 6 weeks, if she was going to the State Prison. I asked if there would be any medical follow up after the staples would be removed the next day, but she had no idea.

Why is my daughter in jail? Is she a serial killer? Hardly. There is no doubt she has made some bad choices and made some mistakes. She is serving time for a probation violation. She had been sentenced to 3 years probation for a DUI she got in July of 1999 and began not reporting to her probation officer during the beginning of her third year of probation.

For this violation she has been sentenced to one year in prison. She was at Estrella Jail waiting to be moved to a State Prison.

While I believe that she should be punished for her errors, her punishment should not have PERMANENTLY SCARRED her, nor should it have cost her spleen and nearly COST HER LIFE!!!!

My question is: Is there an attorney out there that can represent her in a Court of Law and win against this "private" Auschwitz of Sheriff Joe Arpaio?

I am truly afraid of what may happen to her now or if she will ever come back from there alive.

Nameless for now - Sheriff Joe's Long Arm of the Law may reach farther than is comfortable for me.

do you think!

AUTHOR: Indebtovermyhead - (U.S.A.)

ed, you might as well sign your name - I think joe might be able to figure out who you are - or maybe it is a common occurance for a female prisoner lose one's spleen while incarcerated at joe's hotel. I really don't know what to think - I always thought he was trying to keep the bad guys under control - there should always be 2 prisons - one for bad guys and one for the rest of the people that have nothing but made a little mistake that won't hurt anybody. And as for the complete lack of compassion which almost killed your daughter, an attorney will find you plenty os justice, no doubt. Good luck.

KimberlyAnn seems to have confused Arpaio with a real policeman...or a real human being.

AUTHOR: Better Bass - (U.S.A.)

Kimberly Ann, this stuff about "lay lives on the line every day", for Arapio, that's not even a joke. He is a liar, a corrupt, criminal coward, the lowest sort of filth,
a Nazi imprisoner of decent human beings whenever the lowlife scum gets a chance.

Yes, I sued this gutless weasel, and I won. So have thousands of others.
He lies for a living. He's a fraud.

This disgusting, arrogant, sniveling, craven chickens--t never laid so
much as chapped lips on the line for ANYONE, except maybe his
useless and indecent, revolting self. He is a full time gutless
worm and a gangster/terrorist who belongs in prison.

About 20% of the suspects he has locked up tonight are there on
false pretenses and DID NOTHING. Another 10-15% or more is
NOT GUILTY of the exaggerated charges this degenerate scum bag
and some demented prosecutor phonied up. But Joe Arpaio, in
his groundless pride and lying showmanship, is guilty of the
basest fraud.

He never risked ANYTHING for any citizen, ever. He is a waste
of space, time, flesh, and money, and should be in REAL prison
or on the gallows.

That's the jerk you are defending.

By the way, I proved my case in court. This incompetent filth
couldn't.

He is way less than zero.

Have YOU got any evidence of ANYTHING?

I hasten to add, this pansy maggot knows who I am. Why do you
suppose the gutless one hasn't countersued me? A child could
figure that out.

I have been there

AUTHOR: Angrymother - (U.S.A.)

I was in this jail from 7/06-11/06. I was accused of something my ex did. While I was there for 4.5 months, awaiting trial, I had to have my son in the same place your daughter was at the county hospital. I have never seen worse conditions then while I was there. If my son would have waited until his due date, I would have been able to have him in the comfort of a normal hospital. Instead, I gave birth, chained to a table and he was immediately taken from me.

I luckily got out the next day and was able to come pick him up, but other girls are not as lucky. They send you back to Estrella the day after having a baby and expect you to take care of the things the doctors normally would help you with. You have to go back to the lovely metal bunks with stiches in your least favorite place.

Also, while in the facility, 8 months pregnant, I had an officer put his hands around my neck, slam me against the wall, and told me "That's a good way to lose your baby". All I was doing was following the instructions of another gaurd who asked me to get in the holding tank behind him. Keep in mind, this was my first time in jail, first time ever even being in contact with a police officer.

I witnessed someone bleed to death and die right in front of us because "there was no doctor on staff until Monday", that was Saturday.
I watched inmates be beaten, tazed, criticised and demened. We were all there for one reason or another, but there comes a time when you need to still treat people as human beings. Let them repent and deal with their sins with God. That seems to be Sheriff Joe's problem, he thinks he's a little too much like God.

Wisdom is wisdom, fraud is fraud, and b.s. is just not true...

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

We all heard about esteemed Sheriff Joe falsifying earlier "threats on
his life" by alternately threatening and bribing an inmate to call so his "threatening calls" could be conveniently recorded.

Liberal conspiracy? Hogwash. This is all really happening, and it's happening because people refuse to acknowledge the basic questions of rights and safety in a community where
the rights of honest citizens diminish daily WITH their safety, due to the public relations swill being served up by this full time,
professional criminal. That's why sons and daughters suffer EVEN WHEN THEIR "CRIMES" PROVE TO BE NON-EXISTENT, because their only REAL purpose to this MONSTER is to provide
grist for his fantasy mill.

The latest abuse--severely under-reported by the clowns in Maricopa County who pretend to be involved in journalism--directly involves an attempt to suppress the truth overall, and is yet
another in a vast history of corruption, during which the Constitution is regularly ignored and violated.

Here's how the real world views what this irresponsible, feeble-minded jerk does, and the machinations of the county attorney's office,
which likewise has a very casual attitude toward similar facts and rights. It's attributed, and similar stories are appearing all over the
world about this insect.

Prosecutor Fired for Mishandling 'Phoenix New Times' Probe

Published: October 21, 2007 8:00 AM ET
PHOENIX The special prosecutor in a case that landed two newspaper executives in jail says his investigation was not "grossly mishandled or mismanaged," and he will not stand to have his reputation tarnished.

Attorney Dennis Wilenchik's comments came a day after he received a public dressing-down from Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and was fired as chief of the investigation involving the Phoenix New Times.

Thomas said Friday Wilenchik had made "serious missteps" and "badly mishandled" the case.

Thomas dismissed criminal charges against New Times the same day.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were arrested Thursday on a misdemeanor charge of disclosing grand jury information in a story they co-wrote in New Times, a free, weekly publication.

The article detailed a secret grand jury subpoena seeking reporters' notes and the names and habits of thousands of people who have accessed the New Times Web site since 2004.

Critics called the subpoena for information far-reaching and a violation of free speech and privacy rights.

Wilenchik says the information about the Web site's visitors was necessary to prove whether Sheriff Joe Arpaio was "endangered or (in) imminent threat of danger" as a result of the publication of Arpaio's home address in the newspaper and on its Web site.

what?

AUTHOR: Kimberlyann68 - (U.S.A.)

Although I do agree that what happened to your daughter was wrong...the delay of treatment.

She was in jail. Officers put their lives on the line everyday and giving certain information can put thier lives at risk, and those of the hospital. All inmates are treated the same from murder to DUI offenders. Do you not think that people don't create injuries to escape or kill people? It does happen. What if it was your son as the dentention officer!

It seems to me this all could have avoided if your daughter did not put innocent lives in danger by drinking and driving!

Where were you when she was drinking and driving, not giving her a ride or checking her into rehab. Who the real criminal? Her probation violation proves she did not want to change, try concentrating on the real problem __ your daughter, instead of suing for tax payers dollars!

If jail is so unfair, choose not to go there! It is a choice!

To Jacquelin, Donald, and Chris and the other illiterates...TRY READING THE FACTS OR GET SOMEONE WHO CAN TO READ THEM TO YOU!!!!

AUTHOR: Leslie - (U.S.A.)

OK, apparently you don't get the point, so we'll try it again, real simple:

(1. This isn't about prisons. 80% of inmates are MERELY CHARGED, and therefore--read that obscure document which you demented idiots and your esteemed sheriff regularly ignores, the United States Constitution--are INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. At least 20% of them are proven to be the WRONG people, charged in error, released for reason mainly to include mistaken identify--very common in Arizona, where nobody gives a s--- except the victims of these jerks--and/or plain out "no crime was committed". Lately, it's been EVEN HIGHER.

(2. Crime in Arizona in STILL on the increase, the only venue in the entire country where it still is, so if jerks like Arpaio had an positive impact, it's hidden very, very deeply
in some statistic none of us can seem to find.

(3. These criminals--and by CRIMINAL I mean Joe Arapio, the S.O.B. whom I charge with false imprisonment and WON--get away with what amounts to a form of kidnapping via fraud and lies and
IMMUNITY in a very disgusting manner. He and some of the other slimebuckets in Arizona "law
enforcement"--we call them the "fiddle while the
g__d______ed city burns idiots"--would do
millenia of time IF the applicable criminal laws
could be pursued.

Yes, Maricopa County DOES have a higher percentage of its citizens incarcerated and on probation than Nazi Germany EVER did, and probably for less reason. More important, the crack cocaine and methamphetamine businesses, and lately, the "X" (ecstasy) business is prospering like nowhere else in the world, and is basically ignored by these cowards. Why,
they could get HURT!!!!!!

It's charming to talk trash about "criminals"
in your 9th strata cloud-and-cuckooland of b.s.
What about the biggest and most degenerate criminals in the country, by which I mean Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Attorney's Office,
and those other magnificent practitioners of fraud, the City of Mesa and their esteem inbred,
depraved "police department"?

Try to learn something about the realities. There are facts and lawsuits and dates and events quoted here, which you totally ignore in your rush to defend this blowhard and his fat slob lap puppet Henderschott. Egad, this JERK
arrested an actor for playing a part in a commercial! How stupid and demented can one
senile crackpot BE????

He belongs in prison.

That's a simple fact.

And those who elect him? Hopeless feeble-minded
geezers with no concept of reality, or in truth,
of their own safety. The man is a cancer, and worse.

And this is just the tip of an iceberg.

For John.

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

OK John,

If Sheriff Joe is doing such a wiz-bang job, then how come the crime rate in Maricopa County is WORSE than the national average in EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY? Care to explain that one?

If Joe's detention centers are so bad, why does the crime rate continue to rise, when there is a nationwide decline in crime overall?

I'll be glad to move back to Florida in a few years. I'll take Jeb over Joe any day of the week, and twice on Sunday!

Joe Arpaio: a paragon of justice and security

AUTHOR: John - (United Kingdom)

My Fellow Americans

Joe Arpaio is a great American who uses old time methods in a 21st Century world. Why can't you liberals dig that? Having women on chain gangs? That's equal opportunities incarceration. I think he should bring in the birch and lash his charges like it was the Spanish Inquisition. Bologna sandwiches? Sounds delicious. Working the desert in stripes and leg-irons? Who needs to watch a film when you can break the law and be Cool Hand Luke down tent city way. Getting his kin jobs in the facility, why aint you giving George Bush snr a hard time for doing the same for Jeb and Jnr? Make sense, dunnit?

I think Sheriff Arpaio and the worthy chaps under his charge are solid pieces of crime busting manhood. He is doing an excellent job. Have any of you looked at the mugshots on the MCSO website? You will find the faces of the scum of the earth; murderers, rapists, drunk drivers, fine defaulters and assorted junkies, sex freaks and other forms of human detritus. This probation absentee might well have been a faker. Her condition has nothing to do with her crime. She deserved to get her cute rear booted into the bull-pen for a year. This drunk driving injury faker was treated by the C.O.s in a considerate and appropriate manner. You have to be firm, fair and consistent with law breaking scum.

This spleen stunt could have been a set-up to distract a guard for an assault and/or an attempted escape. What if Elvis Presley had hooked up with the French Connection mob and tried to kill Sheriff Arpaio using this spleen injury as some kind of expertly-timed-military-type-distraction?

These are strange times. It could happen. Elvis might be alive, and still angry about Joe busting him back in the day. The French Connection mob lost a lot of $, they might have re-grouped, belled Elvis and plotted an elaborate revenge against the finest American lawman since Wyatt Earp. There are evil doers out there in the world who want to rid us decent law abiding folk of our heroes, people like Sheriff Joe Arpaio, an honest man trying to find the right path for us flawed beings still stuck on the crooked path. I think that somebody is out to get him, by fair means or foul.

The car "accident" could have been sanctioned by the Iranians, North Koreans or the ACLU. I am convinced that there is a liberal conspiracy to take Joe out.

Leave the chap alone! He is doing a great job. God bless him, the men and women under his command and the troops overseas. Anyone who thinks otherwise should show up at tent city for "De-Americanisation" where they will be stripped of their citizenship, placed in pink underwear and tossed out of Eden into Mexico.

Before or Behind the Bars

AUTHOR: Devil's - (U.S.A.)

I see both sides of the arguements presented in this discussion, having once been in law enforcement, and a couple of stints in jail. As an alcoholic as opposed to being a thief, murderer, rapist, child molester, addict, I was sentenced to 4 months in prison and probation, not for any moral deficiency, but for a socially important one.

Of the three times in jail, I have never witnessed cruelty on the part of any corrections officers, so much as I witnessed distrust and suspician of the inmates. They simply have a jaundiced view by nature of their occupation. I am a compassionate person willing to help people when I can, but from my point of you, no inmate is not trustworthy under any circumstances in these situaitons. I have experienced very caring, compassionate guards that would like to help if they coult, but that is not their job.

Some people enter the profession for morbid reasons, of that I have no doubt. Those who enter hoping to make a difference, are soon deflated, and the job is difficult. Their perception of reality becomes distorted - The majority may be well behaved and non-violent, but there is no way for them to determine who.

There is generally a good comraderie amongst the inmates themselves while waiting for prison assignments. Some violence, but not such an abundance to overly concern me.

This is jail, decent hot meals, television, I did not lack medical attention, I did read a lot, slept alot - unsentenced and not required to work, though some would volunteer to avoid boredom.

Yet still, prison is a better deal, better food, more freedoms and privileges, medical and dental care and the like - you have to remember, this is their home for a long time,it is more a disciplined lifestyle, than the jail.

I spent my time in the Mohave County Jail, a far cry from what I know to be Arpaios tactics and management. It is true, this is not a jail I want to accidentally fall into, and I buy every word of the horrors described.

Prison is a better lifestyle than jail and is meant to punish - jail is mean't to punish the convicted with terms of 1 year or less, for misdemeanors, not felonies. I believe that the the unsentenced should be treated as being innocent until proven guilty, and should be afforded a modicum of dignity, decent food and shelter. Nothing fancy, I have no qualms about my treatment at Mohave County, I have no desire to end up there again, nor do I reminise about how good it was - it was decnt and humane.

I will tell you what my worst experiece was, it was my last six days in prison intake. Interesting, that as a DUI offender, we DUI's were held in an open room, not a cell. Non-violents were in cells with about a half inch of space under the door to slide pencils and paper through, and violent and disruptive were in cells with no spae at all under the doors, the ones that would through urine and other materials if they had the opportunity. It was yard that scared me the most, none of these three groups were segregated at yard time, and the last group were the ugliest, meanest and foul creatures alive - I don't believe in the eath penalty, but for these folk, it would be a mercy killing.

It is all a matter of perspective, in general, whether criminal or guard, for the most part are generally decent human beings, with a smaller population of criminally violent attitudes on both sides.

Except for Joe. My impression, and that of others in this post, he has a desire to control, intimidate, and humiliate. Pink underwear - what, would they try to smuglle normal wear out of jail at the risk of another charge??? Naww

Just publicising a negative opinion of him, and using your real name, can get you watched until you make a mistake, just like the old Gestapo days. Thank God I have not had to experience his jail (at least not yet!!)

Enough of my soapbox, I am sure I bored many to sleep by now :)

Maricopa County Jail

AUTHOR: Kate - (U.S.A.)

What happened to your daughter is a terrible thing. I would communicate the situation to your State legislators so that some controls can be put on the medical care and nutritional input for the inmates.

There are examples above and I have had my own of delayed medical care and neglect as the wife of a prominant businessman with very good insurance. It just happens. And it happens all over to all types of people. I lay on the floor of the emergency room of my cities 'Cardiac Care' level one facilities having a heart attack while a man who had the stomach flu was rushed in for preventative measures. I lay for an hour. The explanation for this? Women my age don't have heart attacks. Right, well I proved that wrong and until a policeman saw my face and blue lips - no one helped me.

As this young woman's mother it is your job - this situation aside to give her good counsel. The drunk driving arrest should have been a wake up call and the visits to a probation office are a requirement for the penalties for that behavior.

She is accountable to answer for her behavior. And society, at large, has enacted legislation like the one your daughter is uncarcerated under to weed out the people who do dangerous things - like drive drunk and then don't show accountability following their actions. Those are the people who need to be taught that the rules do apply to them and those who will not learn those lessons voluntarily - learn them unvoluntarily and always under very bad circumstances.

Maybe since your daughter (thankfully) survived the situation it's time for a mother-daughter chat about some life issues.

Aside from that - I would certainly contact the state legislature. From what I read above there is a need for some outside controls on this Sheriff.

Having people incarcerated in the United States is not a license to withhold minimal health care and nutrition.

change your attitude and put it behind you

AUTHOR: Suzanne - (U.S.A.)

It is a safe haven. She's the one who fell - remember? I wouldn't have believed a fall from bed either on the part of an adult. When they realized it was serious, they did rush her to the hospital. Are you some medical expert to claim that if she had gone sooner, she'd have her spleen? Not likely. If you raised your daughter adequately, she probably wouldn't have got a DUI and wouldn't have violated probation. Some attitude she must have!

AT THIS POINT, tell her to stock it up to experience, obey the law from now on, forget about it and get on with life and then take the advice yourself. You might also tell her that you were crazy with worry and she needs to shape up her life. Don't blame the laws, the rules of the jail, and anybody else you can find to blame. Can't you see how twistedly criminal that is? Risk violating the law, risk anything that happens as a result, and your family members suffer along. That's life.

Frustranted

AUTHOR: Danielle - (U.S.A.)

I become very frustrated reading many of the comments listed below the original message. As I can feel for this situation because I am a mother, I also know what it is like to be victimized in a driving incident. Very much of the information that people wrote were false statistics also. For instance, I know for a fact that there isn't 75% of the people who haven't been convicted in the jails. That is an exaggeration by far.

My husband is one of the biggest control freaks in the world, and he got an aggressive DUI. Of course he had many things he had to pay, and he spent one week in Tent City. He had to work at 6 am in the morning, and couldn't drive, along with many other consequences. However my husband paid the price.

My mother is a convicted fellon, my father also. I am as straight as a pin without even a speeding or parking ticket. My mother had to pay a restitution, and quit paying after she was off of probation. She went to purchase a house, and couldn't because a bank wouldn't touch her with that on her credit report. I have zero sympathy for people who put themselves in these situations.

Granted the daughter was in a health risking situation however....how many lives did she put at risk when she broke the law. Okay she didn't kill anybody, but she isn't dead either.
I however have been in a driving condition where people broke the law, and I for the rest of my life have to be on pain killers or I can't walk. My Doctors believe that I will most likely be in a wheel chair by the time I am 60 or so. The person who caused it didn't mean to, and I forgive very easily.

At the same time, when you put yourself into a situation that may lead to something such as jail, you loose your rights. Granted this is America, but America was founded with laws in mind that as long as you don't break the laws you keep your rights. The whole point of the Sheriff being hard core is to make it so that people DON'T want to go there. Too often prisons are easy for a criminal to fall back into because it is easier to be there in a controlled enviornment than to be out on the streets. He ordeal was designed to make it so that you absolutely have it harder than the homeless who have rights.

Why should the people who haven't broken the law have it harder. Granted I don't have much sympathy for the homeless who have put themselves there either. But there are those who are and don't diserve to be. I respect this man for what he has done. There are programs that he has implemented that I have used successfully such as the youth program for youths at risk. My teen son was found with a joint... drug tested immediately and clean so it wasn't smoked yet. We sent him to tent city for a day and a night. He was scared straight. HE DOESN'T WANT TO GO THERE FOR REAL!

This is the whole point of his hard core programs. Don't put yourself into a situation that may get you there in the first place, and you won't have a thing to worry about. However the victims of the crimes of something so little as a driving violation causes life long problems that shouldn't have been and wouldn't have been if people obeyed the laws. Or should we say that the victim was at fault because they shouldn't have been out a 3 in the afternoon. Now that is America.

I pitty the fact that she was injured, but jail isn't the only place it happens. Just last week, my daughter jumped off the swings at school. She went to the office said it hurts really bad, but there was no nurse for the past couple of weeks. I took her to the Dr the next day because it hurt her to much to go to school. Guess what...it was broken. Now they didn't even give the opportunity to go to the DR. They gave her medical attention. It wasn't his fault the Dr was an idiot. They gave her medical attention. TWICE!

Should she have the right to go to a specialist when the Dr didn't find anything. Frankly the person you should be angry with is the stinking Dr. Go for a medial law suit, not a legal one on the Sheriff. He didn't tell her she was ok. You have to think of all the false stuff they get too. People trying to go to the Dr for things that aren't warrented. She fell, and I don't know how high the fall was, but usually that isn't anything that is going to cause life threatening issues. It isn't just her they have to think about. It is all the others that may try to get out of jail for the day for something. There are all kinds of directions I could go. Again as a mother nobody ever wants to see their baby hurt. For the love of God, I would be hysterical too, but blame needs to be redirected. Be mad, get things changed for medical attention, but focus the anger in the right direction.

This is America, not Mexico, Iraq or Nigeria.

AUTHOR: Rick - (U.S.A.)

The Sheriff has assumed that all the people being detained at the facility are guilty. I would expect this mentality in Mexico, Iraq, Nigeria, or a bunch of other countries that are backwards, and will continue to be backwards. What happened to "your day in court"?
The Sheriff has become powerful because he has taken it upon himself to be the law enforcer, Judge and jury. The only citizens that are not subject to his humility I bet are his friends, and his family. In being so close to Mexico, the Sheriff has adopted Mexico's way of treating its people. Human life means nothing, and torture is a way of life. Come on Sheriff, treat these people like you would like to be treated.

Sheriff Joe and Arizona Tent Jails

AUTHOR: Lynne - (U.S.A.)

Well, I live in Maine and I have lived in Utah, and California.

I have to agree here that the medical urgency being ignored is a bit strict and unright. But then again, I have to agree that Sheriff Joe in Arizona is doing a great job. The degree of food quality could be better, but having a chain gang, and having them live in tents in the desert, well to me is not inhumane. Our troops are doing it and that is not inhumane.

I don't feel we should coddle prisoners, they did a crime, to get there. In Utah they have to pay 25% a week for their STAY in the Prison, this is food, clothing etc. and it is mandatory they WORK. I feel prisoners working and paying their way in prisons is better then them wasting away in an 8x10 cell. doing NOTHING.

I have lived in California and I have seen a jail without walls, the prisoners roam freely and live freely, I don't feel it is right they should have cable, and have radios and have the comforts of home. And the ability to have those comforts. There are prisons all across the United States that are tougher then this and no one is complaining of them..Prisoners have been known to kill themselves once they enter these prisons.

More and more prisons are starting the Chain Gangs again as well across America. I heard this on the news just recently about two weeks ago. Again I don't find anything wrong with it. Inhumane to put someone to work??
I don't feel so.

Inhumane to put bologna sandwiches on someone plate daily for two meals? I don't think so. Are they supposed to have steaks and patatos daily?
They are there for punishment maybe it will make them think twice before they do something to land them in jail. Maybe the person on the outside will also think twice before committing a crime, as they will land in one of these prisons. I don't find a thing wrong with it. Before air conditioners came around, prisons did not have them way back then, they dealt with heat on a daily basis in a solid cement building.
What is the difference now?

No one complained about it then, now we do? I think taxpayers should not complain about conditions of prisoners but commending wardens and states that are making it tough on prisoners, and saving all us taxpayers money so we don't have to also pay for them while they pay for their crime.

More power to the prisons that are changing their ways and charging prisoners their stay.
Charging them for medical and dental! Enough of the United States Citizens paying for everyone in Prison.

I don't feel it is right though if need medical attention though you do without or refused or refused your family to be with you.. they should work on this with the prisoners and the system to do a payment plan on this.

But to be honest many adults in america cannot afford Dental work to be done on themselves let alone their children. And they do without, myself included.

I have not been to a dentist in ions. So what is the difference with a prisoner, I really don't see one.

that is my opinion and thought on this issue. and everyone will have their own thoughts on this, those are mine.

TheStar.com - Toronto man arrested
after U.S. sheriff threatened

Tue. Jul. 18, 2006.

Star Columnists Graham Fraser
Richard

Jul. 18, 2006. 06:57 AM

MESA, Ariz. (AP) ? A Toronto man was
arrested on suspicion of threatening the
sheriff of Arizona's most populous county and
his family, authorities said.
Authorities took Matthew Carl Sanderson,
37, into custody Friday although he
since has been released.

A spokeswoman for Maricopa County
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said detectives
were going to sift through Sanderson's
computer and other evidence obtained
in a search of
his Toronto home to
determine his motive,
what charges to bring and whether he
should be extradited to Arizona or
prosecuted in Canada.
The threat came in an email June 2
through the sheriff's website, said
spokeswoman Lisa Allen.
The email reportedly said Arpaio and
his family were targeted for death
because of his "flagrant disregard
for basic human rights and flippant
attitude towards
the life of another American."

Arpaio has made U.S. headlines
in past years for having female
chain gangs and
forcing jail inmates to wear pink
underwear. He has a long history
of being successfully sued for
false imprisonment. Recently, he
has come under fire from immigrant-rights
activists who call him heartless
for arresting illegal
immigrants under Arizona's
new smuggling law.

Comments added: Whoever wrote this apparently either "skipped" a few important facts, or was not aware of them.

Among these:

(1. Sheriff Schmoe--who, by the way, is the only
so-called "lawman" on the planet who has actually
had the hell beat out of him by a HAIRDRESSER--has already been exposed at least once for trumping up a totally bogus "threat on his
life" wherein he, himself, extorted fake phone calls from an inmate under his custody. This self-styled bogus "toughest Sheriff in America" (he makes Barney Fife look like a tough guy...hey, didn't Barney Fife just die???)
has a long history of lies and fraud.

(2. The so-called perpetrator is in CANADA, for
crying out loud. How serious can he be? Does
this ignorant jerk (by which I mean Arpaio)
know where Canada IS??? How serious can
such a "threat" be???

(3. Notice Arpaio and his lap buddy
Henderschott do not bother to quote the
so-called "threat" directly, or do anything
else to authenticate their idiotic assertions.
Since these clowns have less credibility with
sane people than Hitler ever did, there is
therefore no evidence whatsoever this is
anything but the manufactured lies of a man
with a long history of fraud and corruption.

(4. Did you notice the "suspect"--more likely,
he's a libertarian who is legitimately
offended by fascists filth like Arpaio--has
already been released????

(5. Joe is undoubtedly trying to intimidate
people all over the country who are offended
by the fact things like this--by which, I
refer to Arpaio himself and his
moronic behavior--happen anywhere, most
particularly in Maricopa County.
A lot of folks like me are deeply offended
by this incident...not by the bogus
"threat", but by having briefly resided
in the selfsame county where strutting,
pompous martinets like this are allowed
in public. Malfeasance, thy name is Arpaio!

(6. Maricopa County needs to see a serious
discussion on whether this bogus charlatan
should be tried first for fraud or malfeasance, or maybe both. And there's more.

First among those charges should be "imitating a law enforcement officer"...but not very well.
He arrested an actor for acting, and
even worse.

Get away from all his lies and
one simple fact stands out: Maricopa County
is the only major venue in the entire United
States where crime is still rising, and has
risen steadily since this con man took office.

Yup, I'm offended, Joe. REAL offended.
By your incompetence and smoke screens.

Joe, it's just another of your demented
scams.

DUI punks

AUTHOR: Nick - (U.S.A.)

Hey, I like Joe. I visited Arizona on a few occasions, and I saw the "pink underwear brigade" picking up cigarette butts at both the rest stops and the DMV. That's awesome. Get to work, @sswipes. It's refreshing to see criminals make an effort to do SOMETHING with their time.

And to the poster about "preferential treatment", that'd have been a hoot to watch Vince Neal of Motley Crue picking up cigarette butts. In fact, living in the Mecca of Celebrities, I'd love to see all of them have to pick up a few cigarette butts. Most of them are litterinig wasteful haps, and I agree, preferential treatment stinks. Criminals are criminals.

And a little more research noted that "pink underwear" is not a fetish thing for Joe as suggested - it keeps them from ripping their jailbird outfits off and running away. Sounds like one of our posters here thinks in terms of "all things sexual"... but that's your business.

Why should the taxpayers pay for inmates and then expect them to just watch TV, or read magazines while incarcerated?

As far as the DUI, there's not much you can say to "innocent until proven guilty" when the blood test or breathalyzer says otherwise. "Did she just use Listerine before she got pulled over"?. She got a break (probation), and then decided to take advantage of it. She went to jail on her own terms.

"Joe can't hurt you" if you're not there.

That said, there is no way to know exactly what happened. We have one side of the story, and all the "Joe Haters" pop out of the woodwork. I wish we had 10 "Joes" in our state.

I hope your (OP) daughter gets better. Acciddents happen, and "Joe" didn't make your daughter fall off the bunk. I can only imagine how many "owies" inmates get every day, and how guards can keep up with the need for attention/desire to be "outside", even in the hospital for a change of scenery.

Maybe they should get those toddler bars on the bunkbeds - to keep people from falling off.

Inmates will often kill other inmates too, just for popping off a sarcastic comment. Rape/assault among inmates is a problem too. And throwing poop and urine is commonplace. Death is commonplace in jails - the posts I've seen here are just a spattering of deaths that happen every week in every jail across America, which doesn't make the argument that Joe is different from any other sheriff's office. I can't wait for people to act surprised at this obvious commonality.

"People shouldn't die in jail". Well, your actions chose your neighbors. Best to ya. Failing to follow the law, and pissing people off in jail can get you killed.

But putting some of these degenerates out on the street can get innocent, law-abiding people killed. So as a law-abider, I say, keep it in the prisons.

If you think you can do better, then join and make a difference. Or sue, because it seems that if your facts are all as you posted, you can breeze through a litigation and make some money.

I figure your daughter will finally do everything she can to stay out of jail when she gets out - which is kind of the whole point to begin with.

Compensation for poor medical treatment is humane and fair, and if what you said is 100% accurate, I'd have no problem with a judgement against the Sheriff's office.

Bashing on "the sheriff" is darn near comical, however. It's like a bunch of students angry that they're in subjection of a principal at school. Someone has to be in charge, and if you don't like it, don't be there.

Joe Arpaio accused of being compared to AUSCHWITZ

AUTHOR: Chris - (U.S.A.)

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County Arizona has been ridiculously accused of being compared to AUSCHWITZ & TORTURE CHAMBERS. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is nothing like this horrendous comparison. Instead of releasing inmates after serving as little as 10 percent of their sentence or non at all because of over crowding in US prisons across the country, he has protected the victims of criminals from releasing them back into society early to possibly victimize again using the same equipment and supplies that our US military uses for our soldiers in Iraq and around the world, humanly approved by our government, saving millions of tax payer dollars in the process. If it's good enough for our military than it is certainly good enough for criminals! The real rip-off is our government officials who refuse to be more efficient with our tax dollars like Sheriff Joe Arpaio to build enough facilities with military equipment and supplies preventing these criminals from being released early possibly victimizing more of us!

I find it hard to feel bad for people in jail. Regardless of what you all think, very rarely is someone in jail who didnt do something to deserve it. Abuse is abuse

AUTHOR: Jacqueline - (Germany)

Okay, Patricia, I am really interested in how you can claim that the biggest complaints come from people who are the first to scream when a crime is being committed against them. It is not the bottom line because your comment is based on what you believe, not necessarily on what is real. You are being unfair to the people who have complaints of a serious nature. And for the record, I don't think that most people with big complaints will feel discouraged from voicing them in fear of being categorized as a sissy for doing so.

I have considered what the guards go through, but it doesn't change the fact that basic human rights are being violated. People are being physically abused and even dying. No amount of spitting, kicking, and sick games involving urine and/or fecal matter should justify physical abuse or a death sentence. And not everyone who is being mistreated or has been mistreated by guards in the past is guilty of acting out in these ways.

It is also no wonder to me that the standards of a guard should be held higher than the standards of a criminal. We are talking about criminals! The reason why they are in there is because they need help in this department. If a guard has the same standards or lower standards than that of a criminal, then he is definitely in the right place but on the wrong side of the bars.
Guards know what they are getting into when they decide to work in this field. And you know what? there is always a door and another job if they aren't cut out for the work. It's tough work, but it's a choice.

Sadly, not everyone can afford to bail their loved ones out. And nobody should have to be afraid of losing a loved one because they're flat out broke. Is this what it has come down to?

There is a way to keep visitors from looking at you like a blooming idiot when you tell them that their time is up. How about telling them how long they are allowed to visit BEFORE hand. Sharing this kind of information would make these things clear. Be clear about what is expected from them and give them a chance to be fair.
And what does smuggling drugs in a baby's diaper have to do with the character of a guard? Nobody is saying that criminals aren't terrible people. Common sense says that they are.
Should this incident sway me to believe that guards aren't terrible? If a guard is terrible, he's terrible regardless of what the criminals are doing.

Why is it that being a guard in Arizona sucks as much as it does? A family member of mine works in a prison facility here in Germany. The criminals that are going in are being punished for the same crimes (okay, besides prostitution - it is legal here and they have a street which is walled from public view where they do their business, underage drinking - you can buy beer at 16 and harder alcohol at 18 - and surprisingly it works out, and drug use - they usually confiscate personal drugs and paraphernalia to destroy and arrest the dealers) and have much more respect for the guards. They actually have the problem that people WANT to go to jail and will commit petty crimes in the winter for shelter from the cold. But the prisons aren't overcrowded and the criminals are learning how to fit into society. They have workshops where they learn a job (for example; auto mechanics, carpentry, baking, cooking...) They do these services at a great discount to all of the workers. We've had the pleasure of hiring the prisoners for these services and were happy with the results and they're happy to be learning new skills, of making money, and to be doing something productive.
Prisoners get their own little rooms (comparable to a dorm room) which they can equip with a radio and sometimes even a television set. Some prison facilities even give keys to their prisoners so they can lock up their rooms when they leave. And on good behaviour it is possible to get weekend passes to visit family.
I'm not saying that this system is the right system for Arizona. It is just another view of what prisons are like in other places.
It doesn't have to resort to abusing criminals into obeying and fearing the law. It is possible to teach them to respect the laws and show them the rewards of doing so. People should obey the law because they want to, because they want to do the right thing. If you treat them exactly how they treated others to get them landed in prison in the first place, they won't learn anything except for that they could've become a guard and legally get away with committing crimes.

Speaking of abuse, what does the poster in the Estrella jail say? I tried doing a search online but without any luck. And what is being done to protect these women?

Sheriff faults car for his accident

May. 30, 2005 12:00 AM

Sheriff Joe Arpaio insists this is not interesting.

That the citizens of Arizona won't care to read about how he totaled his county-issued car at a Fountain Hills drugstore.

How he says the car lurched forward uncontrollably, ramming over a curb and a giant boulder before mercifully coming to rest inches from a busy street.
advertisement

Arpaio was not injured in the wreck.

But he was shaken up a bit. Especially in the confidence he had in his Crown Victoria, which he alternatively referred to as "stupid," "garbage" and a "lemon."

A diagram of the wreck shows the sheriff jumped the curb at the end of a parking space, heading straight into a plant and climbing over a boulder. That impact blew out the front tires and broke the drive shaft.

The car came to rest on the sidewalk of Palisades Boulevard, one of the main streets through the town of Fountain Hills.

A simple explanation would be that Arpaio hit the gas instead of the brake. But he bristled at that suggestion.

"Nooo, naaaah," the sheriff said, shaking his head vigorously before I could even finish asking him the question.

We were in the parking lot of another shopping center, this time for a news conference on safe driving. "I'm a big supporter of traffic safety," Arpaio told reporters.

The campaign was needed, the 72-year-old sheriff said, because students were getting out of school and "young people, sometimes they have a problem behind the wheel."

Arpaio insists he did not have any problems behind the wheel.

He says his wreck was caused by something mechanical.

"I've had problems with that car," he said about the 2001 model that sustained $7,227.21 worth of damage, mainly to its undercarriage and wheel support. "I was never happy with that car."

The normally media-friendly Sheriff's Office kept quiet about the April 2 accident.

His office also was hesitant to release the report after I filed a public-records request. Lt. Paul Chagolla, a department spokesman, questioned why I wanted the report and dismissively told me it was on a "list of priorities."

When the Sheriff's Office did give up the report, it also included several pages of repair records, seeking to bolster Arpaio's claim that the car had mechanical failures.

Highlighted sections of work orders show the car, over the past year, had its transmission rebuilt, leaking fuel gaskets replaced and brake pads and rotors changed out.

But nothing would explain what Arpaio described: a car that suddenly zoomed forward unstoppably.

"It lurched and I couldn't stop it and I just kept going," Arpaio said.

That's what he told his deputy who investigated the accident, which occurred about 10:30 a.m. on a Saturday.

A log of radio traffic shows the state Department of Public Safety showed up at the scene, but the Sheriff's Office kept the investigation.

"Mr. Arpaio said he had pulled into the parking lot of the Osco Drug store and was going to park his vehicle in a space on the north side of the parking lot when his vehicle would not stop subsequently striking the curb and stopping in the landscaping," the report says.

The car was towed to Five Star Ford for repairs. A notation on the repair log asks the mechanic to check for "throttle sticking," meaning whether the accelerator cable was frayed or whether something was making the car act as if the gas pedal were being pressed.

A notation from the mechanic says that portion of the car showed no problems.

Mark Salem, a Tempe mechanic who hosts a weekend radio show on KTAR-AM, laughed when I read him those notations.

I initially told Salem everything about the incident except the driver's name. Salem has worked as a mechanical expert for insurance companies for the past 15 years.

He said he has done about 25 cases of "mysterious acceleration" and none has a mechanical reason.

"The inescapable conclusion is that these definitely involve the driver inadvertently pressing the accelerator instead of, or in addition to, the brake pedal," he said, adopting the well-polished manner he uses in court testimony.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study of "sudden acceleration" accidents that reached the same conclusion.

That theory is further bolstered in Arpaio's wreck by a mechanic's notation that the "over rev limiter" was activated.

That system, Salem said, starts shutting down the car, cylinder by cylinder, if the engine is turning dangerously fast. It also means, "the foot was to the floor."

Still, Arpaio is sticking to his story. He didn't make a mistake. It was the car's fault.

"Maybe I should have gotten a new car (before this happened)," he said. "What do you do? Give up the car? Give it to someone else? Make it their problem? No, I'm not going to do that."

In the parking lot, after the safe-driving news conference, he pointed out the 2002 Crown Victoria he's driving now.

He said this is a much better car.

"I'm a straight shooter," he said, before he got in his car and drove downtown. "You've got to appreciate that."

Yes, but just to be safe, as he pulled out of the parking space I was off to the side.

Well, that IS confusing!

It's like: I liked Reagan's sense of humor (which I did), but I just didn't like his policies (which I didn't).

So, let's just take a stand here, shall we? Either you like Arpaio and his policies or you don't. (And personaly, I don't!)

This particular guy, Arpaio, CAN and DOES do EVERYTHING wrong, and apparently, is not man enough to admit that he hit the wrong pedal to the metal either. Maybe we should put HIM in a tent city for HIS malfeasance! (Or would we be hypocritical for not doing so?)

This brings me to think of other issues too--if he's not safe to drive, then is he safe enough to continue to make other executive decisions?

Not in my book! (but in my book, policy-wise, he hit the premature senility button a LONG time ago!)

To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded! (Emerson)

I'm not 100% sure how you stretch a traffic accident to incompetence. Sounds like some serious age discrimination.

And since it's apparent that Fords have documented issues, you don't know whether the car has a problem or not. Remember Ford is the company with the "optional exploding rear end", from the Pinto days to the fairly recent Crown Victoria's.

It's a fact that more electronics in the car, the more squirrely things are likely to become. A colleague recently had a steering issue diagnosed as a faulty sensor.

As for his policies, I don't have a problem with them. Prison isn't supposed to be country club. Prison isn't supposed to be where the dregs of society WANT to go so they can get 3 square meals and shelter.

Actually, I think that just the opposite is true. Pushing the accelerator instead of the brake was an ACCIDENT. That accident could be the result of any number of things ranging from negligence to senility to a simple slip of the foot. I don't presume to know which it was in this case, however, looking at the info as it was presented in the article leads me to believe that he had an accident of his own fault and is trying to blame it on the car. I brought up his age because it's well known that as people age, their reaction times slow down and people generally aren't as sharp or quick as they used to be. If it really was the car that lurched forward with such force as to break the axle, why didn't he simply press the brake pedal?

Furthermore, knowing that his car was prone to doing this, as he mentioned more than once in the article, and not having had the problem fixed - now that's NEGLIGENCE. Imagine if this had occurred somewhere other than a parking space. I wonder how many people he would have injured or killed.

The conditions in the jail are not the best, I agree, the number of inmates is high, I agree, I also agree that sometimes you get guards that are not the nicest.

AUTHOR: Patricia - (U.S.A.)

It truly amazes me. I worked in several of the jails, espically Estrella Jail. I have read the complaints and read the rebuttals. Bottom line is the people who are making the biggest complaints are the ones that if someone commits a crime against them, are the first one to scream.

The conditions in the jail are not the best, I agree, the number of inmates is high, I agree, I also agree that sometimes you get guards that are not the nicest. But honestly think of what they go through.

Have you ever been spit on, kicked, urine thrown on you, feces on envelopes handed to you? Sometimes a guard is treated worse than the inmates. We are held to higher standards and sometimes our "rights" are stepped on. Yes there are some people that should not be in jail. If you feel someone in your family should not be there then put up the money and get them out.

As far as visitation, believe me it is hard. I have worked it. If the visitors would not try and pass drugs, weapons, and other contraband to inmates, visitation would go faster and longer. Visitors look at you like you are a blooming idiot when you tell them time is up. They are the ones not being fair to the others waiting outside.

The worst thing I found was a man came to visit his wife with their baby. In the baby's diaper was a bag with a powdery substance. Guess what it was. If you guessed drugs, yup, you were right. Now that was wrong in the strongest sense. But yet the public still claims how terrible the guards are.

We try to keep things safe because of the population in there but yet between the amount of illegal immagrants, hookers, and drug users, guards are at a loss. Being in jail is no picnic, being a guard sucks.

But let me ask you a question. Do you want the job? Are you willing to get stabbed? Are you willing to go home and have the nightmares and lose your family? Are you ready to go in and do CPR on a dead drug addict your not sure has aids? If you think it is so easy and you can do a better job then go for it. I have been there. I have experienced some of these things and more.

You judge yourself and others on a different level once you have done this job. Oh! and one more thing, this is directed to the male readers. Do you want your wife or daughter in there with the possibility of getting assaulted. Use your imagination you know what I mean. Maybe people should take a step back and think. Estrella jail has a poster in the lobby.

We can send our children and loved ones to the desert and sleep in tents with the chance of getting shot in their sleep. The only comfort they have is the occasional letter or box, which has been searched, from home. They are in a worse position than the inmates. But this is okay? Something is wrong here.

Please take a moment to think about some of this. I am not defending all the officers that work in the jail because I do agree some are hard and need to find a different line of work, but you do have some that do care but their hands are tied and we have rules to follow and cannot step over that line. Some of these people are in the same boat, they have a family to feed and bills to pay. They are only human. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!

the moster growing in the Arizona desert .. & about the bunk bed situation...

AUTHOR: Jacqueline - (Germany)

I'm actually here because I just found out about an old friend of mine, Gina Box, who passed away due to lack of medical care in Perryville in 2003.

A couple of days ago I tried to find her in the White Pages on-line without any luck. I figured that she was either unlisted or living with someone. I looked up another friend and called her. I asked her if she had heard from Gina and she told me what had happened.

It's a very sad story and my heart goes out to her parents and her four motherless children.
I have looked all over the internet for information regarding what had happened. All I have been able to find is a KAET Horizon transcript.

From what I've read, Gina kept a written record of every time she asked for an appointment, saw a nurse or was given medicine. She wrote grievances against a couple of nurses, wrote a letter to the head administrator, wrote a letter to the health administrator and the war deny. She never received the proper medical care she was begging for.

Gina collapsed in her cell after being neglected necessary medical treatment.
She was taken to Maricopa Medical Center the NEXT day and was diagnosed with severe leukaemia. She suffered a stroke that same day, went into a coma and died the next day.
The last time I had contact with Gina was the Spring of 2003 through her daughter. She was already serving time then. (She was sentenced to 3 1/2 years for not keeping one of the terms to her probation. She was originally charged with selling stolen goods.)My daughter and her daughter went to school together before I moved to Germany, just like Gina and me. And we lived near each other and the girls were friends. Her daughter reminds me of Gina. When Gina was younger she was bright and admired by many. I wonder what horrors could have brought all of it to this.

Now her children will grow up without a mother. And she is already forgotten by the people in Arizona because her story is buried. I am afraid to know how many more people have suffered similarly. I want to know why and how this can happen in a country that symbolizes freedom. America is great. I still want to believe in this. And I want to know how justice will be brought to the people. People, even those with criminal records, are people. People make mistakes. And people pay for these mistakes. The criminals are paying more for their mistakes and getting nothing, not even hope for rehabilitation most of the time. Is it also not a crime to deny care that could save a persons life? Than the people denying care to prisoners are also criminals. How will these people pay for the loss of these lives, or the permanent damage of others? Will they ever sit on the other side of their persecuting ways and experience what it is like to be a prisoner under their own terrible ways?

I want to know how treating people like the way they do in Arizona prisons will make them better citizens. I think it is a rare situation that a person will embrace the hand that strikes them down. If a person in authority representing the key to rehabilitation and a new life is not listening to you, denying you care when needed, showing you that you can not depend on them, treating you like filth, providing you with only enough to get by (and sometimes not even that), and in some cases hurting you, I want to know what you would do. Would you honor what all of this represents?

This teaches people that you shouldn't honor being a good person or citizen. That you should rather fear not being one. And I doubt that many people going into jail or prison are afraid. I suspect this tactic isn't very successful.
Not only is it brutal, it is stupid and ineffective.

If the prisoners keep falling out of their bunk beds, many of which have resulted in death, wouldn't it make sense to spend a few million on building higher bed rails to keep them from rolling out? It seems like it would be worth it if it could save lives and the many lawsuits that end up costing millions anyway.

the moster growing in the Arizona desert ..

I am a Registered Nurse who worked in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Maricopa County Medical Center. This ICU is the unit that these inmates are brought into after surgery or when seriously injured. I worked in this ICU for 9 months and in that period of time, I cared for way too many inmates that had very serious traumatic injuries (many that had fallen from bunks, so it makes you wonder if there is more to that) that were brought to the hospital after several days, even weeks of pleading for help, living in pain and many of them dying due to lack of treatment. It was just to late to recover the damage done. I do believe that people must do time for their crimes, but I also believe that they deserve appropriate timely medical attention. All of the patients/inmates that I cared for, were in jail for drugs. I do not feel that being convicted of anything involving drugs warrants a death sentence. Not to mention the fact that these law suits costs the taxpayers millions of dollars each year for Sheriff Joes inaction. Even if the jails errored on the side of caution, not only would lives be saved but so would tax dollars.

I am not a fan of Arpio

AUTHOR: Jacob - (U.S.A.)

I spent a year and a half working for the State of AZ as a Corrections Officer. I only mention that so that you will understand that I speak from some level of experience. Work in correctional enviroment is one of the most mentally demanding jobs you can ever have. As a corrections officer you are frequently the sole provider of lifes necessity for as many as 96 inmates all by yourself. This overwork can lead to an attitude of, "no blood no foul", when it comes to requests for medical attention. Inmates are by nature manipulative and self centered. I have seen inmates risk serious injury simply to get a trip to the hospital outside of prison. All of which is done at tax payer cost.

I am not defending Arpio. I feel that most of his policies are wrong, not because I give two shits about inmates, but because they endanger his staff.

To the mother of the injured woman. Please understand that no Corrections officer or Detention officer has the right or authority to refuse medical treatment. That refusal usually comes from the nursing staff who are in many ways more jaded to the inmates than CO's. I don't feel that it was the Officer who denied anything. It was the nurse or doctor on duty. With that sole individual lies the responsibility for your daughter's condition. Although it does seem as though the county is being uncooperative to say the very least.

If You Don't Live Here or Know Someone in Maricopa County Jail

AUTHOR: Brian - (U.S.A.)

then keep your comments and wisdom to yourself...because you do not know first hand. I will keep this short...the Nazi bastard has his own prison camp. We express our concern over abuse and neglect in Iraqi prisons and the other foreign exile prisons operated...we need to look in our own backyard!!!. The issue is basic human rights...food, water, and shelter. How much extreme heat can the human body take...how about extreme cold...sleep in 15-20 deg weather in a tee-shirt and flannel undergarment...with one skimpy blanket...and no heat.

2 meals a day...not fit for a rat to eat, let alone a human being....I could go on and on...but those that live in Phoenix and have loved ones in tent city, Estella, Durango all know what I am talking about...to the rest, do not comment on something you know nothing about!!!

In-mates are living in a building that was condemned , and order evacuated by the feds...but Nazi Joe keeps adding more and more inmates to its.

Pardon me!!!!

Wow!...what a feast! The most damning statement straight from his web site is (Quote): "The average inmate meal costs under 20 cents".

AUTHOR: Adolph - (U.S.A.)

After reading all the material about Arpaios on this link, I decided to visit Sheriff Joe Arpaios web site (http://www.mcso.org/index.asp) out of curiosity. In the past I remember seeing at least one lenghty magazine article where 'Joe'
VERY proudly alluded to pride in his operation, and the article was presented in a positive vein.
.
The most damning statement straight from his web site is (Quote): "The average inmate meal costs under 20 cents". Frankly, dismissing all other complaints of this skank of a "lawman", this UNDER $.20 a meal statement speaks volumes. Hell, that would'nt even buy a soft drink!
.
To serve a "meal" within that price range would require: [1]A limit of 310 calories per day as Hitler's henchmen dictated at one time for his concentration camps. This was, of course, a deliberate starvation ploy. [2] Meals supplemented or composed entirely of grocery store, restaurant, etc. dumpster castoffs.
.
For anyone to be proud to the point of bragging of feeding "less than $.20 meals" is sick. Hitler would be proud of good 'ol Joe! You remember Hitler: Time magazines "man of the year" Jan. 2, 1939. Another parallel between Joe and Hitler: strange coverage of a positive nature in public media. Go figure!

Arpaio - a professional politician ..Glen Campbell serving 10 days in a Mesa Hilton instead of his tent city jail for DUI. Preferential treatment? Hyprocrisy?

AUTHOR: Sancho - (U.S.A.)

I was sent an email describing the sheriffs tactics and ideas he had implented there in his jail. Intially I was impressed by the man but like many of these emails they don't tell the whole story. I decided to do a search on the man which led me to this website as well as others.
One which seems to be objective is the following: http://www.doney.net/aroundaz/celebrity/arapaio_sheriffjoe.htm

Here I read about Glen Campbell serving 10 days in a Mesa Hilton instead of his tent city jail for DUI. Preferential treatment? Hyprocrisy? I have no qualms about placing criminals in a tent city jail and feeding them bologna sandwiches but when it is not done fairly, It gives me cause for concern about the man. He may not be as legit as he may profess himself to be.

As far as the young lady whose spleen ruptered: if it is as the mother states then there was a deep wrong that was done in that jail. She should have had immediate medical attention and as soon as she was recovered thrown into a tent city jail.

Pat in Surprise but WRONG is WRONG!

AUTHOR: MICHELLE - (Canada)

First of all Pat the word taught is not spelled "tought". (so you shouldn't be telling someone to teach her kids about something when you need to teach yourself how to spell)

Second, your time will come when you or a loved one will have to face this man. Since you and your kids are so perfect God will make you eat your words. That is how it usually happens. The bottom line is, WRONG IS WRONG, regardless of what side of the fence you are on.

Sheriff Joe needs to be behind bars for all the murders he is responsible for. And yes I did say murders. An incident happend just a few months ago when a man was handcuffed to a chair & was stun gunned 8 times and died. Last year Sheriff Joe & his deputies raided a home by mistake and shot & killed the home owner & at the same time one of his idiot deputies parked an armored truck in the middle of a hill and forgot to make sure emergency brake was on and of course totalled 3 vehicles.(Bunch of idiots) The person they were looking for was wanted for traffic tickets. Does that make any kind of sense? No one is safe from him. Neither are you "Pat in Surprise". It could be your home accidently raided. As for the people making comments about "well don't commit crimes and you will not have to worry about it.." Idiots, are you not listening?!. INNOCENT people are victims here not only people who may have commited crimes. His own deputies are afraid to speak up against him because they will be either fired or forced to quit, they have witnessed this. 3 of them went annoymous and made statements on The New Times and said themselves they can not believe he keeps getting re-elected. They said Sheriff Joe straight up told them, "there is a difference between being hard on crime & being a bad mother fucker... & if you are not a bad mother fuck then i don't want you on my team!" That is definitely someone who thinks they are above the law. (he does not think it, he knows it and we let him!)

I do not believe that all cops are jerks but the ones that suck up to Sheriff Joe along with the others he has brain washed are. It's sad when a group of lawmen that are suppose to "serve & protect" are the ones we are afraid of. I have never been in jail, I am a law abiding citizen, but obviously that does not mean I too can be a victim. I work and pay taxes, but not for this out of control corruption! I too, was a Sheriff Joe Arpaio supporter. I thought he was saving our state money and he was hard on criminals and so forth.... but learning the truth definately made me change my mind. He pays out more in law suits than the money he saves the state. And the number of people killed under his watch is unbelieveable. He rolls around in a 1.3 million dollar mercedes (bullet proof) that we, the victimized tax payers paid for. What's up with that?!. As of June 19th 2004 he has been asked about a $92,000 write off he used for his home. He has not given The New Times nor The AZ Republic an answer on. This is access that is offered to the public. We are letting him live like a millionaire while he IS the corruption on our streets.

I am a Christian and again WRONG is WRONG! He is definately in Satan's corner and the people who support him are in Satan's corner as well. (& if you think i am not a good Christian for typing bad words then save me a seat by the fire, but WRONG is WRONG!)

"The question I ask is how can they be so stupid to fall off a bunk. These are the same US government issued bunks that the military has to use. I don't hear cases of them falling off their bunks."

You really missed the point of that one. This inmate did NOT fall from a bunk. That is the explanation that Arpaio said on the local news. The true story is that he was beat. Had a broken neck, ruptured intestines, broken toes, infact he had stitches on his face at the time of the so called fall. He was found on the floor of a cement cell with dried blood in his mouth a week after incident. He was in a coma for a month and then died. Instead of Arpaio investigating the incident he got on the news and lied! And before you say that inmates were involved, no they were not. The records show that he had and altercation with guards. He was in the tents for shoplifting. The judge did not sentence him to death. Death is what this inmate received anyway.

Pat's tirade is the usual cutesy, flag-wrapped

Joe is a fraud, plain and simple. The facts
have been laid out.

I sued for false imprisonment, and collected.
So have hundreds of others, simply because
he takes the GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT
attitude which ought to be cause for
permanent incarceration of the perpetrators.
Unfortunately, the constitution of the
United States has no teeth in Arizona.

If it did, JOE would be in the slam, forever.

It's nice that the nutcakes and blue hairs

At his BEST, Joe is a massive fiscal liability,
a liar, a thief, and a practicioner of

Treatment of prisoners is the same for our soldiers

AUTHOR: Pat - (U.S.A.)

For those of you complaining about how your children are being treated in Sheriff Joe's jail's - remember - our soldiers serving in Iraq are going through this or worse. They sleep in tents in 120 degree heat, they have horrible meals, (almost every soldier in my son's unit has lost 15-25% of their body weight.) My son didn't drink, he didn't violate parole, he just signed up for the National Guard to support our country in case something like 9/11 happened again

The question I ask is how can they be so stupid to fall off a bunk. These are the same US government issued bunks that the military has to use. I don't hear cases of them falling off their bunks.

Here is an idea - stop blaming the things your daughter does that gets her into trouble on everything and everyone, but the real culprit. If you would have tought her responsibility and consequences when she was younger - she wouldn't have messed up her life and ended up in jail. The truth of the matter is, there are a bunch of whiney jerks in jail ready to find any way to get out of the punishment they are facing, and medical is the easiest way out. It is so easy that it has become a horrible tax burden on the people who do understand responsibility and consequences and teach our kids the same. Because your daughters injuries were internal, they weren't visible and there was no way for anyone to know if she was telling the truth or trying to blow off doing whatever work she was assigned for the day, just like she blew off her probation.

Sheriff Joe's tent city is the same as auschwitz - please - get real. It's that same kind of over dramatizing things that have given your daughter excuses for her poor behavior and choices in the past. Both of you grow up.

God Bless Sheriff Joe! (PS - I must not be the only that feels this way as the election was last Tuesday and Sheriff Joe was AGAIN TRIUMPHANT!

Some reasons not to vote for "America's Toughest Sheriff"

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

These are from http://www.arpaio.com/joe_arpaio_topten.htm
Top Ten Reasons NOT to vote for Joe

The staff at Arpaio.com has polled citizens and employees of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and has complied this Top Ten Reasons NOT to vote for Arpaio.

1:With Arpaio, real law enforcement takes a backseat to publicity stunts.

As an example in one of Arpaio's latest stunts, and at a time when there were 12 unsolved execution-style murders in the county, he staged a massive prostitution round-up publicity stunt.

This two month "sting operation" involved over 350 deputies that were pulled off other investigative details and patrol that resulted in 80 cases that have all been declined for prosecution by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

Nicholas Hentoff of Phoenix wrote in a letter to the Editor of the Arizona Republic" If Joe Arpaio continues to spend the county's scarce law enforcement dollars on chasing consenting adults engaged in private sexual activity, while child murders and sexual assaults remain unsolved, he should be the one to explain to the next grieving mother why her child's killer has not been caught, prosecuted and put in prison. And the taxpayers should send him a message by electing a new sheriff who doesn't treat public funds as his private public relations piggybank."

2: He lives in a fantasy world of self-importance.

His claims of arresting Elvis Presley, breaking the French Connection, and being in weekly shoot-outs suggest a serious mental problem.

Some of his other claims include:

Arpaio: Invented the idea of housing inmates in tents.

Truth: This is untrue, the Arizona Department of Correction has used tents for decades. Facilities in other states also used tents before Arpaio.

Arpaio: Claims credit for feeding green bologna (surplus food) to inmates

Truth: Jails and prisons here in Arizona and all over the country feed surplus food to inmates and done so for many years.

For more of Joe Arpaio's outrageous claims, see our "Truth" page

3: Millions of tax dollars have been wasted on lawsuits

Lawsuits brought against Arpaio by employees, former employees, inmates, and the families of dead inmates have cost the county millions and Arpaio has misled the public about the cost to taxpayers of lawsuits.

The case of Scott Norberg, who died in jail, is a good example. Arpaio has frequently said the $8.25 million settlement cost the county nothing and was covered by insurance. What he does not say is that, at the time of the settlement, the county had a $1 million deductible.

Because of these lawsuits, the deductible for the sheriff's office insurance coverage has increase from $1 million to $5 million per incident.

4: He is responsible for a critical and dangerous shortage of personnel in both the jails and patrol.

This condition is unsafe for the officers, the inmates, and the public. This situation leads to more lawsuits which results in more millions of tax dollars wasted.

Arpaio has created a critical and dangerous shortage of deputy sheriffs needed to perform fundamental law enforcement services in the unincorporated areas of the County.

Deputies that could be assigned to patrol, are assigned instead as personal bodyguards for Sheriff Arpaio.

Detention officers, desperately needed in the jails, are assigned to the labor-intensive, publicity-producing chain gangs in order to get Arpaio on more TV news programs.

Projects that bolster Arpaio's ego, satisfy his need for publicity, and insure his personal safety are all fully staffed. Unfortunately, at the same time on the streets and in the jails of the county, lives are placed at risk by Arpaio's self-serving abuse of authority .

Also Sheriff Arpaio has the largest executive staff of any police agency in Arizona and perhaps the United States . By comparison, the Los Angles County Sheriff's Department, the nation's largest, has half as many on the executive staff. The millions spend on excess executive positions should be used to hire employees that could be assigned where really needed.

5: Hundreds of current sheriff's office employees, represented by a number of employee organizations, have expressed a vote of no confidence in Sheriff Arpaio.

Police officers associations throughout the State of Arizona have voted "no confidence" in Joe Arpaio as Sheriff! These include; State of Arizona Fraternal Order of Police, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge Five, Maricopa County Deputies Association, Arizona Cops.

If the police officers in the State of Arizona have no confidence in Joe, why should you?

6: The self proclaimed "Toughest Sheriff in America " is too fearful to debate other candidates.

There have been several debates scheduled this year between the candidates that are running for the Office of Sheriff. All the candidates have appeared minus one, Joe Arpaio.

Why is Joe so afraid to debate his policies in public with the other candidates? Could it be that he couldn't read from his "scripted" speech that he has given hundreds of times before other public gatherings where he makes his outlandish claims to fame.

Several years ago Sheriff Arpaio visited the outlying patrol districts of the Sheriff's Office to what was suppose to be a "question and answer" meeting between his employees. Instead at each of these four meetings he started out with his canned political speech telling the deputies how important he was and that they depended upon him for their jobs. At District's Two and Three, he was politely asked by Patrol Sergeant's in attendance if he could answer questions from the deputies. He hesitantly stated that he wasn't prepared to answer any questions but would try. He was then asked basic questions that involved officer safety issues, the lack of training, and pay issues. Arpaio fumbled trying to answer, and on several occasions sidestepped the question entirely. Weeks after these meetings, the deputies and sergeants that asked these questions to Sheriff Arpaio were transferred to newly created positions within the office. One assignment was being stationed in the basement of the main jail on graveyard to answer a telephone that never rang, and another to the property room, inventorying items in storage.

7: Arpaio routinely abuses his authority for personal, political, and vindictive reasons.

Two Republicans and an Independent running against Arpaio have all alleged abuses of power on the part of Sheriff Arpaio. In 2002, the county settled a lawsuit out of court with former employee Steve Barnes for wrongful termination after he blew the whistle on questionable tactics by the sheriff's office.

Barnes claimed that Arpaio's office wiretapped former Arpaio aide Tom Bearup and that it had targeted County Attorney Rick Romley for surveillance. Bearup, W. Steven Martin and Dan Saban, all running for sheriff against Arpaio this year, have also reported that they have been followed and harassed by sheriff's deputies.

Another example would also be the arrest of Nick Tarr, otherwise known as "Joe Arizona". In 2020 there were three hot propositions involving Indian gaming in Arizona, Nick's "Joe Arizona" character supported racetracks having slot machines, Sheriff Joe was supporting a proposition that kept Indian gaming on Indian land. For Halloween Nick decided to campaign in downtown Phoenix dressed as an officer. He went into his prop closet can came out with an old uniform shirt from DPS, his trademark "I Love Arizona" t-shirt, and a pair of Arpaio's pink boxer shorts.

Dave Hendersott, chief Deputy of the Sheriff's Office spotted Nick and he called DPS twice to have them come out and give Nick a citation. DPS officers came out and decided there was no crime. Undaunted, Hendershott then ordered his own deputies to arrest Tarr of impersonating an officer.

The charges against Tarr we later dropped and Tarr now has a lawsuit against the Sheriff's Office.

8: Many community leaders and concerned organizations have looked beyond the smokescreen to see the corruption and incompetence of the Arpaio administration.

Sheriff Joe used to boast of 80% approval ratings amongst the voters of Maricopa County . But as the truth gets out about how he really runs one of the nations largest Sheriff's Offices, his popularity is taking a nose dive! Currently the O'Neal survey lists his approval rating at only 35%

As an example, the Son's of Italy dropped Arpaio as being a "Top Cop" cited controversy over allegations of people dying or being seriously injured while being held in Arpaio's jails. "I just believe that law enforcement officers, like Caesar's wife, must be above suspicion," De Sanctis said, making reference to William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar." "There's too much controversy right now for us to include Sheriff Arpaio in our report," she said.

9: Sheriff Joe Arpaio has deceived, misinformed and outright lied to the public!

He lies about his personal history, the cost of lawsuits, the effectiveness of his programs, and the money he claims to have saved taxpayers. He takes false credit for posses, chain gangs, tent jails, feeding surplus food to inmates, and pink underwear.

There are numerous examples that we can find where Sheriff Joe has outright lied to the public.

As an example, Arpaio spent over $10,000 in tax payer money to have Arizona State University study recidivism in his jail system. ASU found that there was no change in the rate at which inmates returned to the jail. Joe has discounted this study as false and continues to claim that his jail program has reduced crime in the valley.

Another claim is that Sheriff Joe has saved county tax payers millions of dollars because of his innovative programs. Then why can't he control his budget? Why was he $7 million dollars in the hole in 1999/2000/2001 and where did the money go? Why was Loretta Barkell put into the Finance Director with a title of Deputy Chief? Because the BOS put her there and told Chief Hendershott that if he got a handle on the budget he would get his raise.

For More examples, check out our Truth Page.

10: Arpaio's self-serving and ego-driven actions have severely damaged relations between the sheriff's office and other government organizations. .

Joe Arpaio filed a law suit against the BOS over the money and he hired outside attorneys to represent him. Joe and County Attorney Richard Romley have never got along in any way. He has never advised the City of Phoenix P.D. of his "Joe Shows" or asked if they wanted help and just moved in.

BILL,

Do you have any idea how simple it is to rig an election? Especially with the kind of corrupt power this Sheriff seems to have. They could vote all day long, and even if NOT EVEN ONE person voted for him, he could easily rig the whole thing to win. And don't start all that stuff calling me a conspiracy theorist, I've seen it done a lot more than once. It's just something crooked officials do.

I don't know for sure you guys, those of you who know this Sheriff, but maybe a private detective could help get evidence about this Joe sheriff, that you could take to state or federal authorities. I don't know. I would try voting him out, but if that doesn't work, it won't be hard to figure out why.

The needs of the many must outway the needs of the few!

AUTHOR: Bill - (U.S.A.)

Well very interesting read i must say. If the whole story is being told I wish a speedy recovery for your daughter. Now as for most of the other comments and stories I do notice that most are from the disgruntled ex-inmates. HMMMM simple solution, you did not like the trip dont plan a return one. I have to assume the area is like any other, you will never make everyone happy no matter what you do.

In these times of economic troubles for everything from schools to municipalities, with their rising operating costs and decreasing budgets it would seem the sheriff has found ways to get the job done. News flash this isnt a country club your off to. Face the reality that you did the crime, the time isnt going to be a vacation. By the way I have to wonder what the general puplic thinks of his standard operating procedures? Havent seen anything on that.

Seems to me that if the whole area was so offended and disagreed with the way this branch of their law enforcement operated they would have removed him from office. In case you havent paid attention the position of Sheriff is an elected office therefore it stands to reason that the public as a whole favors the way the peace is kept or he would have been voted out. Also dont forget he would have been arrested by either another agency or your District Attorney who is actually the chief law enforcement official in most counties. Just another suggestion-- Dont Like It ===VOTE

Bill, these aren't allegations, these are established FACTS.

AUTHOR: Randolph - (U.S.A.)

Apparently, from his lofty perch in the
"Wolverine State", Bill thinks the citizens
whom he dismisses as "ex-inmates" are automatically liars. Trouble with that is,
Bill, these "ex-inmates" went to court as
plaintiffs, mostly, having had the charges
against them dismissed as FRAUDULENT (WHICH
I DID, ALSO) or gone to trial and been
pronounced "innocent", then proceeded to
PROVE with prima facie evidence that Joe
Arpaio and his minions had, in fact, committed
what, to a civilian, would have been a major
felony. In other words, Bill, we are talking
about FACTS. Now, Bill, I can see that
in the world of penitentiary guards,
that may not seem relevant...stuff like the
Constitution of the United States, the
presumption of innocence therein, the facts,
actual evidence, the exculpatory evidence
and facts concealed by Joe Arpaio and other
nincompoops of "law enforcement" in Maricopa
County, but let's put it this way: with
the sleazebag courts and judges in this
county, especially in Mesa, Arpaio isn't
losing all these civil suits because he's
RIGHT. He is losing them because he is
WRONG.

Also, he is spending more money on slime
like his flunky Henderschott, the overweight
gob of goo who personifies "double-dipping"
in so many ways, than anyone in County
government EVER has. And less per SUSPECT.

Notice, Bill, that word "suspect"...because
that's what most of Joe's victims are. And
an unseemly HIGH percentage of them prove
to be guilty of nothing, because a lot of
the worst people in this area have discovered
that the lowest element in bogus law enforcement
will put people in jail very casually, based
on ridiculous accusations, absurd exaggerations,
and just plain LIES, some of them told by what
passes for "police" in scum holes like Mesa,
where any crime is simply attached to people
chosen almost at random (provided they aren't
Mormons in good standing, they can get away
with anything in Mesa) and pressed right up
until trial, with perjury the most common
"evidence" and lying cops the standard
medium of exchange. That 20-40% of those
who go to trial wind up "innocent" is only
a small part of that story of injustice.

WE are talking facts here, Bill. What the
HELL are you talking about?

I took the time to do the legal research,
and what this man does is frightening to me.
In another venue, I myself worked with prosecutors, and if we bent a rule a little once in a while, let's just say Arpaio and some of the similarly corrupt jerks and nincompoops
and scam artists and crackpots in Maricopa
County bend the law so far it becomes actual
crime, and meets itself many times over in some
infinite circle of b.s.

But it's nice to know you are "on top" of
things. Next time, maybe you can tell us
why Hitler and Stalin, who acted in a similar
manner, are not bad at all.

This is a civil rights issue

AUTHOR: Ed - (U.S.A.)

The greatest issue concerning Joe Arpio and his county jails is the issue of civil rights. Is the food bad? Yes. Are the conditions horrific? Yes. But these issues pale in comparison to one fundamental issue. Most people in his county jail, as in most county jails, have not even been convicted of a crime yet. They are still going through the judicial process. The majority of people in his county jails are still presumed innocent. In this situation, the greatest thing these people are provably guilty of is not having enough money to throw bail. A small minority of people in his county jail system have been found guilty and generally are serving a year or less. But for the vast majority a great question must be asked. Why, if they are presumed innocent under the constitution, are they treated and kept under such horrible conditions? A county jail should be nothing more than a holding tank for those going through the judicial process if they cannot afford bail. Why are these people punished? Why should conditions for those presumed innocent be so bad? I have never understood the logic behind treating these people so poorly. Nor do I understand how Arpio gets away with it. How can the state or federal government just stand by and do nothing? Arpio is a runaway train with no brakes and he is going to continue to get away with anything that we allow him to get away with. How anyone, guilty or innocent, can walk away from such a terrible experience and be the better for it is beyond me.

Bill, you live a hell of a long way from
Arizona!

This lowlife Arpaio is a pukebag, who has
locked up or kept locked up AND tortured any
number of people who were, in fact, PROVEN
innocent. I myself sued him for just such
an episode and WON.

Joe Arpaio is a clown, a money-sucking fraud.
Yes, most of the people he deals with are
guilty of something. That has nothing to do
with any of the perfectly valid points made
which indict this fraudulent piece of filth
as exactly what he is, and PROVE IT.

I know there is a sort of "code" among
jailers who like to think of themselves as
having something vaguely to do with law
enforcement, but piss on Joe. He is a gutless
showman.

Read the story about the massive fraud he
perpetrated to make himself appear to be in
danger from a "mad bomber"... Like Joe, it
was all bullshit, of his manufacture.

This county needs a Sheriff who has
some concept of reality and law enforcement,
and who is interested in something other than
inflating his incompetent, fatbag, corrupt ego.

And it IS NOT Joe Arpaio. Or anyone like him.

I notice you didn't even address even one
of the above-noted FACTS. This windbag
maggot needs to be gone, better yet,
incarcerated permanently as the terrorist
and fraud he is. Any decent human being
in this county knows that. One thing Maricopa County has lots of is liars in government, and Arpaio is the worst of the lot, with Romley, his chief adversary, a close second.

It's interesting

AUTHOR: Bill - (U.S.A.)

Its interesting to read the previous discussions on the Maricopa County jail. It would be appalling if the stories told by the whining self-centered sociopath former inmates are totally true. After thirty years of working in a penitentiary I have concluded that a large majority of inmates and former inmates will greatly exaggerate their tales of woe in order to gain the attention and sympathy of the person listening to them.

The girl with the broken spleen is rather tragic if true. Anyone working in an institution will testify that when a patient/prisoner complains of stomach problems and there is no noticeable injury, there is not going to be an immediate response other than conservative treatment. This is common where there are large groups of people. It would happen even in the military.

I had double pneumonia in the service and was treated for a chest cold until I passed out in the barracks. They then decided to do x-rays etc. and I was hospitalized. I wonder if not incarcerated, would she have gone to a hospital and insisted on every test if she had to pay for the tests?

Prisoners bring on their own grief. They will con anyone they can, anyway they can, to get their way. Correction officers are the first to learn this fact when they first start working in an institution.

The prison personnel are not moronic bullies who are on a power trip. They work a thankless job because it has benefits and pay that the average factory doesn't have. They work a 24/7 job to be thanked by the prisoners by having urine and feces thrown on them, law suits filed against them for imagined offenses against the inmate, and various other indignities directed towards them. The do this with dedication even when it entails working holidays and weekends in an extremely high stress environment. They do the job so you won't have to.

Rehabilitation is a myth. I have rarely seen it work. Many prisoners will learn a trade that will earn them minimum wage or less when they are released. They cannot survive on the skills they learn so they return to crime. Psychological treatment does help but it is terribly expensive and only effective in small groups. John Q. Public doesn't want pay for it.

The sheriff has to deal with a public that wants a hundred dollar solution for a ten dollar bill. They want the addicts and perverts out of their neighborhoods. The average law abiding citizen has the shoot em all and let God sort em out mentality.

What would you do in his shoes? He is obviously doing the best with what he has. Criticism is the stress reliever for the ignorant. Constructive criticism is the stress reliever of the informed. In our undisciplined society there lies the whining, wanting something for nothing individual, who, when they cannot get their way, resorts to childish derogatory name calling and aggressive behavior.

Our culture today is such that the prisons are over crowded due to the narcotic related crimes. Do you as a taxpayer want to pay a twenty percent increase in all taxes to pay for more jails and hopeful rehabilitation? If not, then what is the solution? Would you, the former inmate, work in a prison?

Lets have a discussion on how to build a better system that is cost effective.

write EVERY DAY, ALL OF YOU

AUTHOR: Julie - (U.S.A.)

How on Gods Earth can this Sheriff NOT be in prison HIMSELF?

To ALL OF YOU, whether you know him or someone in his HELL or not need to write EVERYDAY! The Media all the stations you can find, write the house , senate, politicians, anyone that can make this a big public deal, keep fighting until all of this is on the NATION WIDE NEWS.

Let the media and the politicians that you write know that when it all comes out into the open that you will tell the media that you contacted them for help but they would not help!

I live in GA, and this is the first I have heard of this man but the same thing is going on all over the jails and prisons of America. They talk about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, I wrote to Greta Van Sussen of Fox news and said that if they would look into it they would find the same treatment of people in America's prisons, this is her reply:
i have done criminal defense work here in usa....it is UNBELIEVABLE what happens in some of our prisons here...greta
That was cut and pasted from her email reply to me.

But try my idea, write ,write, and write some more, write all the media, all the politicians, papers, lawyers, let them know that when you find someone who will help you will be sure to tell the public that when you asked them for help, they would not help. That's not blackmail, thats a fact.

This is addressed to RANDY,

First off if you would have paid attention,IDIOT, before you start hurling insults, JERKFACE, you would have seen, @SSHOLE, that I live in SC, DUMBA$$, and that would be a long commute now wouldn't it?

For someone who is SOOOOO innocent, you sure are aweful defensive. So to reiterate my previous point, either MOVE AWAY, VOTE HIM OUT, or SHUT UP AND LIVE YOUR LIFE! It's that simple.

My problem was that people were begining to bash police and guards IN GENERAL. I know ALOT of cops, and am married to a GUARD, and I don't know any that are "BAD." But were is the uproar like this when an INMATE treats a guard improperly?

I really think you should visit a psychologist, because it sounds like you have some "issues." You lashed out at me like I was addressing you personally. You hurled insults like a horny alley cat. You really need to talk with someone!

Get a grip, Get a clue

AUTHOR: Misty - (U.S.A.)

I do not like the assumtion that prison guards and cops are all bad. True there are a few bad apples, but some are there to do a job and make a living.

If you don't like your Sheriff..... VOTE HIM OUT!
Wait.... I am sorry, a covicted felon can't vote.

If you don't like your Sheriff..... MOVE!
Wait.... I am sorry, you can't move if your on probation

If you don't like your Sheriff..... DON'T COMMIT A CRIME.

I am 30 years old and I have a COMMON NAME and I have NEVER been falsely accused of a crime. I have managed to NEVER be in the wrong place at hte wrong time, And how do you just "WALK OUT INTO A CHOPPER SEARCH LIGHT?" If a chopper has a search light going in my nieghborhood, I'm staying in my house with the DOORS LOCKED, the LIGHTS ON, the TV LOW until I think alls clear.

I truely feel for the people with the serious medical problems that went unaddressed, and I think you guys should have an investigation done on all the people "falling off the bunk beds." But come on you can't bash ALL guards, because you had a bad experience. Most of these guards are doing as they're told to do, and responding to how they are being treated by the INMATES!

If the problems exists as you claim they do, do something about it. Letting people know, as you've done here, helps to let some of the pressure off your mind, but it doesn't do much to solve the problem. Your vote can't count if it's not cast. If you don't vote against him then it's the same as voting for him. Get up and do something, don't just bash the people who are doing a job. If there were no one in the jails then this wouldn't be a problem. But there will ALWAYS be criminals, so someone has to do there job. If the guards go in there, and they don't have a KICK ASS attitude, they will get their ASSES KICKED, and the inmates will escape and maybe next time they will rape or murder you!!!

treatment or training?

AUTHOR: M - (U.S.A.)

if treating them like shit worked then the rock would have worked. what you usually get is angry men and women that will usually do dummer things to not go back . not smarter things. he's no hero to me. treat a dog badly and some day he will bite some one and unleash the anger he stored up. since the majority of criminals are locked up for drug related crimes - and compulsive behavior and large somes of money gets you treatment we don't treat them because they have not deserved it. So we simply get angry and compulsive people. California, nevada, new mexico must see a good share of the drop outs of this experiment in social training. See you can teach a kid with a stick or with love. teach him with love - and he will be sucessful using those techniques. teach with a stick he will be sucessful less often but will still be in a twisted way - his view "successful." What makes a sucessful human? Are ability to love and be kind. As for the boys in the desert in a f*#ked up hole of sand - If the chief was willing to do seven days in the same sand box I would say they are all in it together. When he won't stay 2 hours without air conditioning, or 7 hours for that matter. he is a poor chief and a poor example of a leader. You have to be honest. simply killing over 25,000 people just because they don't like you or what country you come from suggests the stick mentality. We are wasting the best of what makes us great and next year and the year after the memories of who shot who and why will live on. so would the memory of compassion and love if we tried it too. Its time we bring them home and start a plan to treat them with respect. WMDs -Weapons of Mass Distruction look who distroyed what, when. The boys over in the sand and there commitment don't need to be included in this because there is no comparison. They are doing a job that demands commitment, training and leadership. The boys in AZ have no job, " no purpose" are receiving negative commitment and leadership models to follow. Wait there is a comparison. The AZ boys are not feeling better about themselves, working as a team, following a leader, becomming a leader - some one you can admire and respect, no we have painted them pink.

nothing personal just my view - Love, compassion, can work too, look a sweden.

Sheriff Joe needs to go

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

I can't believe the messages I've been reading about this dirtbag sheriff that Maricopa County has -- and this is the guy who wants to become Governor of Arizona???

Now getting to the point regarding the original post -- while I don't condone anyone who has had DUI, what happened to the nameless' daughter when she was in a life threatening situation was not right. She needed medical attention IMMEDIATELY, and instead these goons laughed it off and thought it was a sham. Please remember that she is not in jail for murder, robbery, rape, or any of that. She was in jail for violating her parole relating to a DUI charge. And a family member has EVERY RIGHT to know the welfare of their loved one; something these goons refused to acknowledge when the daughter was in the hospital being treated.

Well I tell you this, and Sheriff Joe, you better listen: if that ever happened to me in your county or anywhere else, and if I come out of there alive; you would be subject to the biggest lawsuit the state has ever seen, and trust me, when I seek legal action, I pursue it to the fullest extent possible.

It just sickens me to read the corrupt government that is in place in Mesa and apparently in Maricopa County in general. While it is true that there should be a man who needs to clean up crime and make major cities like Phoenix a safe place to live, there is also a thing called justice: innocent until proven guilty. Have a sheriff who is tough but at the same time is fair in decision-making. This goon who is your sheriff in Maricopa County needs to be replaced; otherwise, you are going to see Phoenix become Berlin a la 1939.

Contemplate your navel and acquire wisdom...

AUTHOR: Randall - (U.S.A.)

When someone says "God Bless Sheriff Joe",
and describes him as "The toughest Sheriff in
America", we have to recall: he is also the
only lawman in American to be beaten senseless
by a HAIRDRESSER.

He reminds me of Hermann Goering, the other
Nazi Buffoon, of sixty years ago, only he lacks
the wisdom and class.

The day I went to course and smeared
excrement in the faces of a slimebucket
county prosecutor, Sheriff Joe, and the
equally useless filth at the Mesa Police
Department, there were half a dozen
former inmates there, suing Joe for false
imprisonment and etc. They ALL won. Guess
what? Those are formal, official, and
FINAL pronunciations of justice, though
none of them are sufficient.

Isn't it amazing that none of these
"defenders" of this skunk ever mention
the constitution and details like those
noted above, which are not, in fact,
"technicalities", but THE HIGHEST LAW
OF THE LAND?

Cops (or fake cops, which is what
Maricopa County mainly has) need to
show some concern for the law and
humanity, or they serve no purpose at
all. Those who prosper and gain advancement
by garnering the "honor" of imprisoning
or even detaining innocent people on fake
charges are COWARDS, unwilling to face the
really and truly overwhelming march of the
drug industry and gang growth here in the
county. Mesa has lots of them--the names
Gaffney, Lines, Cantrell, Withrow, and many
others, just in this town, spring immediately
to mind. They are useless, sniveling,
spineless, pansy parasites, the denizens
of fraud, who corrupt the community with
their crackpot, insane accusations, and
advance by smokescreen and flimflam.

Meanwhile, the communities rot due to lack
of meaningful law enforcement, and pay outrageous
salaries for personnel not really suitable
for work under the golden arches or in car
washes.

I cannot think of the esteem Joe without
picture that useless tub of crap, Henderschott,
whose presence on the public payroll is an
insult to anyone with the intelligence of a
slug... Mister "Double Dip", they call him.
He is the toady who actually served an actor
wearing surplus sheriff's department garb, on
the set of an advertising "shoot", with arrest
papers.

The charge was "imitating a police officer".
It was close to Halloween, too. Geez, Joe,
maybe you need something to do, huh?

I think the first person who ought to be
indicted for imitating a law enforcement officer
is none other than the useless fatbag of fraud,
Joe Arpaio himself, whose scam with an inmate
to make it appear he was under duress from
"life-threatening situations" is proof enough.

How ridiculous does this fascist dirtbag
have to get before he is ridden out of town,
covered in tar and feathers, upon a rail,
where he properly belongs?

I have a REAL crime problem where I live.
And guess who NEVER shows up when there is
trouble???

IGNORANT COMMENTS, PAIGE!

AUTHOR: Lonni - (U.S.A.)

Gee Paige, I guess you didn't really need to tell us you weren't a rocket scientist, that becomes extremely obvious after reading your comment. It's always annoying when people try to post comments who are totally ignorant to the overall situation.

Perhaps before you condemn every individual who has had the bad fortune to be housed under the direction of a psychotic madman, you should examine the facts. The majority of the inmates are UNSENTENCED, not convicted of any crime yet. This is still America, where you are innocent until proven guilty, right?

Isn't that what your husband is defending....our American rights??? The other inmates, who are sentenced have been convicted of small crimes, doing a short stint in the county jail. They have been ordered by the courts to be removed from society for a specified period of time. That is their punishment. Do they deserve to be abused, brutalized, mistreated, denied critical medical care and murdered while serving their sentences?

My concern is not with the pink underwear, as we in Phoenix know, that is just another one of Joe's cutesy publicity statements. Do you think the inmates care what color their underwear or socks are? They're just trying to survive until their release date.

I hope no one in your family ever makes a bad choice or mistake, (as we ALL do sometimes) while living in Phoenix, because then you will see first hand just how ignorant your comments are. So, before, YOU throw stones, know what you're talking about!

Paige, you should watch this slimebucket... He is NOT anything to do with law enforcement.

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

Paige doesn't live in this crime-ridden hell hole. So she hasn't had the opportunity to watch this fascist scumbag con man strut his stuff and lie and cover up.

I sued him and won, so have many others.
But the bitter taste from wrongful imprisonment
and fraudulent evidence and so on NEVER goes
away. What I know for sure is: filth
like Arpaio and lots of so-called "cops"
here in Maricopa County will lie their asses
off, until they get caught. And of course,
because the parasite prosecutors rely on their
lies and perjury to build their reputations,
the LIARS never have to face up to what they
did.

Make no mistake. There are LOTS of people
in jail who belong there. Trouble is
demented lardbuckets like Arpaio abuse
everyone, and nothing in the corrupt
system here resembles the constitution of
the United States.

Joe needs to be tried for impersonating
a law enforcment officer. Being a buffoon,
loudmouth, and idiot are, unfortunately,
not criminal charges themselves.

Paige, Arpaio is a two-bit imitation
of Benito Mussolini, strutting in the
desert and PRETENDING to be a tough guy.
That he is enriching a small cadre of
equally insane and corrupt lackies and
flunkies is another whole story by itself.

He is kept in power by the bluehairs, who think THEY will never be under his hobnailed heels. They are mistaken. His mismanagement, corruption, fraud, and draconian, overblown "punishment" and insane, fake philsophies cost the county money every day, in lawsuits, every one of them valid, by the way.

Paige, nice to sit in civilization and note how wonderful this monster is. In Maricopa County, any contact with filth like Arpaio (and much of the bogus "law enforcement" dregs in this county)
leaves EVERYONE feeling unclean. Why not come down here and try it?

Don't worry about the ecstasy and crack and meth dealers you see all over the place: Joe doesn't! He has "another agenda".

A Simple Solution -- Don't be a criminal

AUTHOR: Paige - (U.S.A.)

I think I have it all figured out on how not to go to Joe's jail. Don't be a criminal. How simple is that? Don't do the crime and you won't go to jail. Pretty d@mn simple if you ask me, and I'm not even a rocket scientist.

Boo Hoo. They have to wear pink undies and eat some moldy bologna. I bet a rape victom would do it willingly to stop the nightmares. Sure would be a small price to pay for the families of murder victoms if it would get their family member back.

And heat, don't even talk to me about the heat. I'm a proud military wife who's husband spends more time in the desert and in the heat. He did nothing more than volunteer to protect and defend the constitution of the United States. Not a criminal, a man serving his country with pride.

Overcrowding. Too many prisioners in the jail. Ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe it was because there were to many murderers, rapists, drug dealers, drunk drivers, or theives? Don't want to go to a overcrowded jail then don't go to jail. Don't now how to do that? Then scroll up th the first paragraph.

So before you go throwing the stones and the one enforcing the law, you may want to take a hard look at the ones breaking the law. The methods are harsh, but this is jail people. Not a vacation or a trip to the spa. They're not going there to be pampered, they are going there to learn not to do it again.

These People are not the First or Last

AUTHOR: Sylvia - (U.S.A.)

I have lived in Phoenix all my life I grew up in the South part of town which every one knows is not the best place to live.

For the idiots who think criminals deserve to be treated unhuman you have another thing coming. They are people jackass who have made a mistake not animals getting ready to be put to death. I know a great many of people who have been sent to what we call hell on earth. They like the girl are happy to be sent to prison or let out.

What you must remember is that the majority of people in the county are not yet convected and will be realesed when proven guilty. They do not deserve the treatment they are given. It is bad enough for them to have to worry about other inmates hurting them but they have to worry about the gaurds too.

These people dont care about the people who are behind these bars but to some one some where those people are very special. I had a very close realative incarserated reacently and she told me about a great many things that I found emoral, but the story I will share with you is that of a young girl. She was being beaten by another inmate, the guard on duty did not like the girl getting beaten so she watched for 5 to 10 minutes before she broke up the fight and put the beaten girl in solitary confinment.

What sort of guard was she?Who hires theses sicko's? Let me add I have family on the other side of the law and will not say that all the guards are crazy but the majority are. Who is sherieff butthole Joe to say that these "People"can not have there basic human rights of being treated fairly?

Those are humen beings in those cages not animals. 2 meals a day and dirty living conditions what kind of human rights is that?

It is idiots like you who put dickheads like him in these posistion of power.

Sherieff Joe is a sad little man who has fun of making another mans life hell.

It is hard enough being away from your family but to be tortured is too far.

He reads the inmates bed time stories over a television system located in each cell block. Mocking them from is home in a big confy office chair, with a comfy red kings robe, and smoking a big cigar. What a saditic dick head.

When will it stop? When people in AZ see him for what he is and the inmates he treats horribaly come together and let the world know what is really going on behind Sheireff Buttholes jail walls.

Jail and prisons are supposed to be
different for the reasons already spelled out
in detail: jails are MAINLY for suspects,
not those who have been convicted.

I was unfortunate enough to be in this
cesspool for 11 days on a case of mistaken
identity. This cost me a job and more.
I sued your scumbag boss for $47,000 and
won. Thing is, nobody deserves HELL for
a sin he didn't DO.

Even in the old testament, the lunatics

not make any actual DECISIONS.

County needs to be rid of. Him and Romley
and the filth in Mesa who arrested me and
Markley and Brown.

Read the case histories and the law suits,
stupid! Your boss is just another lunatic
Nazi circus director, with the portfolio

idiotic local press.

I didn't sue the miserable sonofabitch for
enough, but I have it, and it will get me
out of here. I am tired of this
moronic form of "law enforcement" and the
goofy jerks who advocate it.

I am 6'3", 270 lbs., and part Hispanic,
and my name is Spanish, but I am BLOND.
The guy they were "looking for" was
5'3" and 145 lbs. or so, very dark.
How f-----g stupid do you have to be to
figure out someone has a common name?
And how g-----ned dumb do you have to be
to figure out that TWO last names are
NOT the same as ONE? And that statistics
do NOT match?

I will not go through this again. I worked

outrageous sales taxes to support you scum.

Sorry. There may be a decent man or two

America -A Doomed Society ..People are brutalized even while caged. By the very people who swore to uphold the constitution

AUTHOR: Norman - (U.S.A.)

The Occurances in the prison run by sheriff Joe Arpiao are horribly tragic and and reflective of this society at large. When the official's hired to oversee the accused take on the mindset of the criminal then you have "fox" watching the hen house.

In prisons thru out the U.S. these very real stories occur dailey. Minute by minute. The Warden's and there "crew" take part in ritual beating's, rapes, and orchestrated murder's. It is commonplace in America to "classify" ones self. Usalley above another.

In our system of economic's people are "middle-class" and such. And so goes it in our own live's. Have you ever said to yourself " I'm not like that"! Really? Thus in our Injustice system are like minded people, "I'm not like them" and they make it a point to let this be known. This way they enforce there self illusion and become a self-righteous all american "good guy." Why we'll show these no good, low life's a thing or two! And so it goes on.

People are brutalized even while caged. By the very people who swore to uphold the constitution, bill of right's ect.. As this continues America will continue it's DESCENT. Also have you ever said or felt"I'm not one of them". I have. Change must start with me.

GET A REAL JOB DAVE! ..nothing more than a spineless, brainless idiot on some power hungry head trip treating the inmates and their families like trash.

AUTHOR: Lonni - (U.S.A.)

In response to Dave, the guard at the jail, I am infuriated at your claim that the only comments posted so far were from proven liars and criminals. Well, I am neither. I am the parent of an inmate. I am not a liar or a criminal. I wonder how you idiots that call yourselves guards sleep at night. So far, every guard that I have encountered is nothing more than a spineless, brainless idiot on some power hungry head trip treating the inmates and their families like trash. (I guess it all makes sense when considering the low intelligence required to perform your "job".) The only thing that gives me comfort is the old adage, "What goes around, comes around". Some day you will be in a similar situation, where you will require a little compassion and understanding, and some brainless idiot (like yourself) will flaunt their power over you. I hope your life becomes as miserable as you've made everyone else's. Perhaps a little more time at school would improve your spelling.

God Bless Sheriff Joe

AUTHOR: Mark - (U.S.A.)

I wish there were more people like Joe in the judicial system. Remember, jails and prisons are full of innocent people. While mistakes and errors happen (which may have been the case in this instance) inmates are always looking for ways to get out for awhile. Making false medical claims or making up stories on how they are mistreated. If you are or were an inmate, of course you are not going to like the way you were treated. Jail or prison is not meant for return visitors. I would love to take a poll of previous inmates and ask how many would like to go back to one of Joes jails. I would be willing to bet, no one would. That tells me he did his job!!! This country is full of "repeat offenders". Not in Maricopa county!! I would, will and have voted for Joe!! You do the crime, you do the time. Pinstripes, pink underwear, tent city, chain gangs and the whole nine yards!!

Who can you trust?

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

I work in the jail and can tell you that most of what you hear from inmates and former inmates are lies. They have nothing better to do in jail but think of ways to mess with each other and Detention Officers. There are so many false medical requests that medical has a hard time keeping up with them. If the inmate had said they were hurt at the time of the accident it would have been imeadatly taken care of. I am sure the person was not ignored. Remember there are two sides to each story and the only ones talking here so far have been proven liers or criminals.

bunk bed falls

AUTHOR: S - (U.S.A.)

Has anyone heard anymore about the girl that fell off a bunk and died at Madison. The man that supposedly fell at madison had more injuries than just the internal injuries. His vertebreas in his neck were nearly on top off each other. He was put in a full metal halo. His feet had stab wounds, abrasions and bones broken. He was taken to Maricopa Hospital alive but no family member was called for several days. He was in a coma, on life support, in a halo, his stomach was left open after surgery so that the infection could drain. That is how his parents and other family members saw him.

Joe's Jail to many die

AUTHOR: Jean - (U.S.A.)

I was shocked last night when I watched news 5.The story was about Sheriff Joe's jail and deaths inside. One case was about a "legally blind" young man injured in tent city. He did not receive proper medical treatment. He was tossed into the hole and 5 days later a guard heard a noise and thats when he was taken to the hospital. The young man was suffering from internal bleeding and fell into a coma. All Joe could basically say, see the cam he was alive when he left the jail. Im not responsible for the type of treatment he received at the hospital. Well maybe if proper medical treatment was implemented in the first place this young man would still be alive. This young man suffered for 5 horrible days in the HOLE without any medical attention. 5 days without being able to contact anyone on the outside to even try to get help. I cant imagine how scared he was and the pain he must have suffered. How sick and weak he must have felt, and not one person would help him. This is so wrong, so sad.

Sheriff Joe Needs To GO. It's time to vote him out.

Sheriff Joe, I suspect this young man must have suffered greatly

AUTHOR: J - (U.S.A.)

I watched a news report on news 5 last night and a legally blind young man was injured in tent city. They tossed him into the hole and 5 days later someone heard a noise (he fell off the bunk). They finally took him to the hospital latter he fell into a coma and died.

His injuries included internal bleeding. All Sheriff Joe could basically say was see the cam hes was alive when he left the jail.

I suspect this young man must have suffered greatly for the 5 days he was in the hole bleeding without any medical treatment.

Why did another person have to suffer?

AUTHOR: Sue - (U.S.A.)

I just cought the news and heard that another female has died because she fell from her bunk in the Arpiao jail. How many more will have to die before we can get rid of this butthole? I feel very sorry for the familys of the persons in Arpiao's torture chamber.

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

Now after reading all of the above I am appalled. What can be done about all this? How can such a man be allowed to continue? I can understand strict but this is inhuman. I have heard of some tuff jails but this sounds like a movie script for some horror film. I have changed my mind about Joe. He sucks!!!! Govenor? Lets hope that never happens.

In case you wonder...

AUTHOR: Les - (U.S.A.)

I was in jail and on probation for a long time, on charges which were, let us just say, somewhat exaggerated. That part doesn't really matter. What I found out was that you go to jail VERY fast in Maricopa County, before you even really have a chance to consider what is happening. I got "probation-violated" about half a dozen times. I was not at my "registered address" one day when my bus broke down on the way home. I was seen "drinking" (it was a root beer, but in a frosted mug, and somebody finally had to verify that to get me out of another trip to jail), I fixed a friend's car and took a short trip around the block to test drive it (therefore not being at "the address"), and--get this!--I had to clear up time to go grocery shopping one day, and was sick and could not go. Nor could I get my P.O. on the phone. Therefore, I was not where I was supposed to be (his voice mail didn't work). I was also violated because these people refused--get this--to leave messages on my voice mail, and despite endless paperwork describing my business name, did not even recognize it as mine. Probation violation can be attained in Maricopa County, especially in the filthy lunatic asylum, Mesa, without really DOING anything. That someone already very sick should be subjected to this, on somebody's whim, is very common. It is a wonder anybody survives incarceration in this area. False arrest, police perjury, and probation officers jumping to often ridiculous conclusions--they go on here daily, many, many times. The system is corrupt and brutal. Nobody checks ANYTHING that can possibly help out a potential "jailbird"... Just toss them in jail and forget about it. Mind you, I am not saying I was innocent. I don't think I was "innocent", though I really wasn't guilty of much of what they charged me with. Had I known where it led, I would have taken NO PLEA BARGAIN, spent the money for a REAL attorney, and fought like hell. My "defender" assured me I would be out and on relaxed probation in a few weeks. It has taken three years now, and I can just BARELY see the end. In the system or even AROUND it, EVERYONE is lied to, all the time. Even the "victim" of my "offense" was lied to so often it was ridiculous. A friend of mine had to put this on for me.

There is no U.S. Constitution in Mesa. And almost no sign of one in Maricopa County.

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

I am entering this on a friend's computer. I am three days out of jail on a case of "mistaken identity". I will spare you the details. What matters is, I should never have been IN.

Apparently, Maricopa County and especially Mesa have some kind of idea that people SHOULD be jailed casually. I see crime in this down DAILY they ignore...but they refuse to deal with it. Why, they might get hurt!!!

Lawsuits can only solve so much. They mainly burden the taxpayers, Arpaio never pays a dime from his own pocket.

What the HELL ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? What the HELL ever happened to the constitutional prohibition against cruel and unusual punishments? Whatever happened to proper warrant procedures and identifying suspects properly? They take all these fingerprints and photographs, and still can't tell ME from a guy of another RACE four inches taller??? Whatever happened to evidence and probable cause???

This is a fight about good and evil, and unfortunately, right now, the bad guys have the power. Not only was I innocent, I was able to prove it ON THE SPOT, AT THE POINT, AND ALL ALONG THE WAY, and I was summarily IGNORED, both by Mesa P.D. and by the Sheriff's people.

I am not 100% sure, but it seems the fellow they were ACTUALLY looking for is already incarcerated somewhere.

Arpaio says that lawsuits are a byproduct of
"fighting crime" and infers everyone he handles is a crook. Guess again, scumbag!!! The successful lawsuits--and probably a high percentage of those which do NOT pay--are a result of his ludicrous errors and misconduct. If anybody is "imitating a law enforcement officer", it is Arpaio. And the same goes for Mesa P.D.

This is a silly-assed and destructive attempt to appear to be doing something about crime, really nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Meantime, I can buy (and I DO NOT BUY) crack, meth, ecstasy, even heroin, in two dozen places in Mesa ALONE I stumbled on quite by accident.

QUESTION: If I find these places BY ACCIDENT, why don't these morons locate them by investigative effort, instead of fumbling around
with harmless people like me whose only "crime" is having a name similar to someone else's???
Does anyone think these stupid weasels could figure ANY of that out?

Everyone deserves medical

AUTHOR: C J - (U.S.A.)

My daughter is in Estrella Jail. She had cervical cancer and took the proper medical treatment last year, however the cancer can come back at any time and without proper treatment will spread into other areas. She currently has an infection, she has requested 3 times so far to see a doctor and has not seen one as of yet. This is a serious medical problem and the infection could cause major health issues.I am very conecrned about the non medical treatment of her and others incarerated.

I recently read at maricopa.gov that the Executive Management Tean of Correctional Health Services are looking for health care workers for the jail health care delivery system. I wonder What system is that? After all it appears those that should recieve medical treatment do not get it.

Joe Arpaio is a criminal, full-time, full-blown, the most dishonest human being in County Office, a profiteer and slave trader. And those are his GOOD points.

But the very existence of him and people like him make on point crystal clear: THERE ARE A GREAT MANY EVIL PEOPLE IN MARICOPA COUNTY!!

And a great many stupid people who do not understand that showmanship, hyperbole, hogwash, and lies, long term, will cost this county billions of dollars.

This man is a clown, who exceeds his authority every day.

The jail system mainly houses suspects, who are treated FAR WORSE than convicted criminals

in prison. What kind of insanity is that??

At the very least, this is inappropriate.

At the worst, it is so vile, it lacks even a proper name.

This is very common, I have seen similar things.... This is Arpaio's Biological and Chemical Warfare Terrorism...

AUTHOR: Lester - ()

Nobody in this world knows what it is like

to be locked up, until he winds up in some place

like Arpaio's jail.

And it can happen for the craziest of reasons, and medical emergencies happen even to folks

who are just waiting to be charged, and have

happened, in my unfortunate experience, to people who are there, but innocent.

And don't kid yourself, there are lots of innocent people in Arpaio's jails.

We throw people away here. Wages are the second lowest in the U.S., the economy has been going down the pipes for two years, and this damned

place just keeps eating people up. What is it, do we hate ourselves?

I spent over a year in there, being shuffled around, and I was lucky to be fairly healthy.

But I saw guys get bad infections and serious

medical problems, guys who were just waiting for arraignment...shuffled around, hidden, disregarded, dismissed, even belittled.

I think one guy died. We never did find out.

Thing is, even if they were guilty, it was

most pretty small stuff they were charged with,

and some of the damage--most of it--was permanent.

I only took the plea agreement to get out, and if

someone had told me what probation was like, I would have gone to trial, and now I know, I would have won. My "defender" was useless.

But I had to get out of there, even if it meant two years' hard time.

Saddam Hussein? Hell! Joe Arpaio is doing chemical and biological warfare on people right here in Maricopa County, and he does it for nothing much more than to make himself look cool.

And don't be stupid. No matter who you are, if you are not a high-up Republican or Mormon or rich, or better yet, all three, you can wind up in jail just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

First time I went here was for two days, and that was just a "mistake"... I literally walked out into the search helicopter's light right after a burglary. And you keep thinking, "heck, I'll just explain, and they will understand."

They never understand. The system says you go

to jail, then MAYBE they figure it out.

Jail is jail, primarily for suspects, who are at least technically innocent....

AUTHOR: Jim - ()

It's all very nice to get into dueling buzzwords and adopt, say, M.A.D.D.'s currently "sexy"

anti-DUI posture.

Trouble is, generally, people in jail are "suspects"...albeit of course, most of those

in Estrella and other "tents" operations have

at least accepted some kind of plea agreement and are therefore, officially, guilty.

Arpaio considers them all criminals, treats them all like filth and worse, feeds everyone garbage, and quite candidly, sanitary conditions at any and all of the facilities adminisitered by

Maricopa County are FAR WORSE THAN THE NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPS.

Unless, of course, one is MOTLEY CREW, who happened to be briefly in jail when I made my 22-day visit there in late 1997. They were kept in private cells, after hours were spent cleaning them up, and the guards brought them pizza and magazines.

By the way, though the two felony charges against me proved to be totally false and I can prove that they were based upon fraud and perjury, the County took this ALL THE WAY TO TRIAL, and because of a "paperwork glitch" that I pointed out repeatedly to the guards, I was held in error long after I should've been bonded out. This, too, I can prove, and I have Sheriff Joe's money to prove it. Anybody in office look into this or the filth underlying it? Hell, NO!!!!

Anyone who goes there is lucky to leave without TB or hepatitis. The food is so bad most people cannot even grasp the descriptions.

This county has more people locked up, per capita, than Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia EVER did, and yet most of the criminality I see is right out in the open, unchallenged by the local "authorities"...

Anyone here acknowledge Constitutional provisos against cruel and unusual punishment, or, say,

involuntary servitude????

I have had dear ones severely injured by drunken drivers, and have had my OWN beefs with them, including damage done to my car. But that is a long way from wanting to see everyone who has had one drink too many locked up in a place worse than the Black Hole of Calcutta, simply for having one drink too many, particularly at the stage where they are merely suspects.

In my case, I was assaulted by three thugs, at my very door, and because I dared to identify two of the three juveniles, the local police--by far

the worst criminals I have ever seen, way worse than the idiots who attacked me--I was exposed, ALL THE WAY TO TRIAL, to two criminal charges of totally fraudulent "aggravated assault", in a case in which one officer flat-out lied from beginning to end, and another simply "disappeared"....

I am sick and tired of hearing scumbags describe how the "guilty" (about whom they usually know NOTHING) get off on "technicalities", when in reality it is often through technicalities like perjury and false police reports that lazy and cowardly morons who call themselves "cops" get convictions.

Using this sewer as a means of extracting plea agreements is just one of their many corrupt ploys, and it is high time it exploded in the very faces of the rats who use it.

THE KILLER JOE ARPAIO

AUTHOR: Linda - ()

I have also had my experiences with Joe Arpaio and his team of goons but I wanted to comment on the article in the New Times. I heard Rosie O'Donnell interviewed on the O'Reilly Factor and the subject was about the prisoners being held in Cuba. She disputed the idea that they were not being treated humanely. She said and I quote, "This is America. We don't kill people in our jails" I heard that and I immediately thought, "Oh how wrong you are Rosie." We kill people in our jails in Phoenix.

Not only did I immediately e-mail her but I copied the article from the New Times and sent it to her. I sent it to Fox News, Nightline, 48 Hours, etc. I even sent it to the White House. Not one reply have I received. No one really cares. Only the people who have personally experienced Joe and the Goons. I figure in order to work for Joe you have to be one of those ostracized people in high school that everyone made fun of. I say this because there is something wrong with them.

I didn't committ a crime nor did my son that was with me visiting the jail and yet we were treated as criminals. I honestly think the boots, guns, handcuffs, etc. represent some type of power for them. They make me sick and I would do whatever I could to put Joe Arpaio in his own jail.

As for the pink underwear, I think Joe must have some hidden sexual problems since he likes to see men in Hot Pink Underwear. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he ran for Governor and won because I don't think anyone really cares. They just think that they are criminals and deserve whatever they get. People just don't really know what it's like out there.

I would like to know why the families are treated so poorly. It's hard enough going there to visit someone you love and to be treated like that is despicable. I only know that what goes around comes around and that in the end justice will be served and Joe & the Goons will get what they deserve. Has anyone ever noticed that Joe Arpaio has a gin blossom nose? Could it be Alcoholism? I dislike him so much. I have heard so many things about him. Has anyone heard that a relative of his owns the commissary where the prisoners get there food? I don't say that as a fact but I have heard that more than once. I would do anything to prevent him from being our Governor. Who does that creep have in his pocket?

PRISON vs SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO'S JAIL ..No contest ..I look forward to Prison

AUTHOR: - ()

I received the following letter from my daughter as she was about to leave Estrella Jail and get transferred to the State Prison.

March 25, 2002

Dear Mom,

When I saw you at the hospital, we didn't have much time and I wasn't feeling well enough to explain what happened to me at the jail before I went to the hospital where they finally ended up removing my spleen. It all seems like a bad dream, but it wasn't. I have an incision scar down the entire front of my chest about 12 inches long. At the time of this letter, I still have the staples in from the surgery so my body looks like a road map that's under construction.

On Friday, March 9, 2002, I was called to the dayroom for library books. I fell from my upper bunk #52, and landed on the open drawer of a lower bunk #45 under me and then I hit the floor. The wind was knocked out of me and I had severe pain in my left side. Medical was called, and they came. When I first got my breath back, I laughed out of relief because I was breathing again. I was still stunned and in shock. They asked me if I was ok, and I said yes, at least I thought so.

As each hour passed, it became more and more difficult to move and the pain just increased. The pain became so bad; it became just about impossible for me to get up on to my upper bunk. I asked if I could please be moved to a lower bunk. They repeatedly said I was just using the fall as an excuse so get a lower bunk. After several requests throughout the afternoon and evening, they moved me to a lower bunk. The next day, Saturday day 2, I called you Mom, and described my pain to you. Remember, we both agreed, I had all the symptoms of a broken rib. Well, the pain kept getting worse.

On Sunday, day number 3, I was having a lot of trouble breathing. I kept asking if I could please get medically checked out because the pain kept increasing. They kept telling me there was nothing they could do if it was a broken rib. They wouldn't even wrap it if it was broken. I was told that I could fill out a tank order to see the Doctor, but there was nothing they could or would do for a broken rib.

On Monday, day number 4, I could hardly move. I kept asking to be seen by someone in Medical because I knew something had to be wrong inside of me, but I kept getting told that nothing was wrong with me.

Day number 5, Tuesday, the pain kept getting worse. After dinner, I sneezed while lying on my back. Instantly, I felt an abrupt change internally and intense pain under my ribs and my lower abdomen. It increased to the point where I couldn't breathe or stand. I could not lie down. Again, Medical was called but didn't come. The pain was unbelievable. Each hour that went by, I became more ill. I was so sick to my stomach, I became very light headed, and I was having a very hard time trying to get my breath. During this time while I was in extreme pain, Officer Wargo observed my condition, and felt it necessary to call Medical and request them to check me, but again, they refused to come to see me.

Tuesday evening, the pain was unbearable, I found the only way I could get off my feet, as I could not lie down, was in a kneeling position. I remained in a kneeling position until I finally passed out. I did that several times during the night. One time during the night, I passed out again and I hit my head. I had a good size lump where I hit. Medical was called and they came. I explained to them that I was not able to lie down flat on my bunk. They told me to get on my bunk, lie down and be quiet or they were going to take me to the hole. As I look back at it now, if they had taken me to the hole, I would have died in there as there would not have been anyone around to find me in my weak condition.

I decided I had nothing to loose, and even if there was nothing they could do for me, I put in a tank order (a written request to see the Doctor) and was called to medical early afternoon on Wednesday, day number 6. I explained to Karen Watts, PA, that since I sneezed on Tuesday evening, the pain had become horrible and I could feel something was seriously wrong inside of me. I was also very sick to my stomach and light headed. I explained how difficult it had become to breath. I also told her I was unable to lie down. I asked her to please x-ray my inner organs as I could feel something dreadfully wrong inside my body. She laughed at me and said, x-rays are for bones.

I told her about the pain I was experiencing shooting up my left arm and into my neck. I also told her my arms and hands were getting numb. Karen asked me if I had ever been on Psych Meds and she asked me if this was my first time in jail. She said I was describing too many problems in too many areas and said she would give me a slip for an extra blanket and some muscle relaxers. She told me I was showing signs of hysteria and said there was nothing medically wrong with me. She sent me back to my bunk. I went to the Med Cart twice that day to find nothing had been ordered for me, there was no slip for a blanket or was there a muscle relaxer for me. I just waited in pain.

I felt so helpless; I got on my bunk again in a kneeling position, and hoped I could pass out to escape the pain.

The next day, Thursday, day number 7, the Med Nurse was walking by and noticed me sitting in the day room leaning up against the wall. I was so weak and so tired I didn't have enough strength to hold myself up. She noticed I looked jaundice and sent me to Medical. Once I was there, I waited to see Dr. Gregorio for about 3-4 hours. When she finally returned she proceeded to check my vitals. The first time she took them I was standing and I nearly passed out and fell to the ground. She started making arrangements for me to go to the ER. The results of my vitals were of concern. Dr. Gregorio checked my vitals a second time with a little better results. It appeared to me that she changed her mind about sending me to the ER. My heart started pounding and I started to panic. I couldn't believe she was reconsidering. She finally decided to send me.

When I arrived at the hospital, the Doctor asked me to describe my pain. When I told him about the shooting pain up my arm and into my neck on my left side, he knew immediately what was wrong. They did a CAT scan. It was then, they told me my condition was very serious and that I was bleeding internally. The technician that did the CAT scan told me I had lost 4/5's of my blood and he couldn't believe I was still alive. My spleen had ruptured when I sneezed on Tuesday. I had lost a tremendous amount of blood. I had been lying, or I should say, kneeling, for 2 days bleeding internally. They had to operate, but my condition was so fragile, they couldn't. They began blood transfusions to try and stabilize me so they could operate. I remained in intensive care all Thursday night.

On Friday morning, day number 8, the surgeon explained to me that he was hoping to be able to repair my spleen, but unfortunately, because of the severe loss of blood and because it was ruptured, he would not be able to repair it and would have to remove it.

He then proceeded to ask me to sign all the necessary "medical" papers again explaining the seriousness of my condition. I asked if I could please call you Mom to let you know what was happening but the officers present refused to allow me the call.

All I could think of was my little boy, I wanted to hear his voice and assure him how much I loved him.. they wouldn't let me call.

The next thing I remember was "coming to" after surgery, and thanking God that I was still alive. I stayed in the surgery recovery/intensive care from Friday after surgery until late Monday afternoon, day 11, when I was stable enough to be moved to the Detention Ward at the hospital, where I stayed until Wednesday, March 20th, day 13, when they moved me back to Estrella Jail.

I was told on Tuesday, the 19th, while still at the hospital, they would be taking me back to Estrella, and then brought back to the hospital on Wednesday to have my staples taken out.

I asked the Doctor if I could please stay one more day, have my staples removed, and then go back to Estrella and he agreed. When I went back to Estrella on Wednesday, I still had my staples in and there was no mention to me when they would be removed. I even asked when they would remove them but was told they had no idea.

Today is Monday the 25th; I did receive my orders on the 20th when I returned to Estrella from the hospital, to be moved to the State Prison. So, I could be going at any time. I am uncertain how long it will be after I am moved to the Prison before I will be able to contact you or my little peanut, but have heard it could be anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. I still have my staples in and they are becoming very uncomfortable. No one has given me a clue how much longer they will stay in.

To be honest, I am looking forward to going to Prison. The food here is so horrible. It's horrible for a "healthy" person, let alone someone who just got her chest cut open. I had to stop eating because it made me so gassy I couldn't stand the gas pain, and thought my incision was going to blow up. I found dealing with the hunger pain was easier than the gas pain caused from the food. I wish the hospital had given me something besides Jell-O and broth before dumping me into the Jail food menu!

This may be the last time you hear from me for a while. Please try not to worry about me. I think once I get to the Prison I will have a much better chance of recuperating from the surgery.

Mom, I am sending you a list of names. If anything should happen to me, you will have my list of names, booking numbers, addresses and phone numbers. There are 15 names. You would be able to find out what really happened in here. So, just hang on to it. All the girls on this list saw me fall. Every one of them were present and witnessed me asking, and finally, begging, for Medical attention. One of the girls was even "written up" for "interfering" because she was trying to get help for me. Every single one of them is willing to give a statement or be a witness, if needed. I will write or call as soon as I can.

Please hug and kiss my son for me and remind him over and over how much I love him.

Thanks, Mom, for everything. I love you and can't wait until we can all be together again.

And Mom ...try not to worry, I'm doing ok!

Love,

"Spleen less"

UPDATE from Perryville

Late on Monday the 25th, they called me to medical to remove my staples. I left for Perryville two day later. Getting to Perryville was an adventure. I wish I could have gone in a wheelchair. I waited in a holding cell with twenty other women from Midnight until 9 AM with only tape on my incision. The holding cell was so crowded that it was body to body. I tried to sit down to rest but there was not enough room and I was in too much pain to even try to get in a sitting position. Standing for eight hours was horrible. I felt like my chest was going to burst open and there just wasn't anyway to get off my feet. I wasn't allowed to keep any medication with me during transport so I stood in pain for nearly eight hours.

*EDitor's RESPONSE to the above REBUTTAL..

AUTHOR: - ()

*EDitor's RESPONSE to the above REBUTTAL: ..Jail is supposed to be a safe place of confinement. Being Confined is the punishment. Being removed from society is the punishment.

Whatever the heck happened to your daughter, does that have any bearing here?! What this woman's daughter did, has nothing to do with what happened to your daughter.

What the heck does it matter what she did? It doesn't matter if she hasn't had a drop of alcohol since the day she got the DUI or if she drinks like a fish to this day. I read nowhere in the report that she didn't think it "right" or "fair" she was going to Prison, in fact, she expressed the need for the penalties being placed on her daughter.

For god's sake, she was convicted of a DUI and was put on probation for 3 years. We have no idea of what other requirements or penalties were required of her.

She is in jail for violating the probation part of her punishment, which could mean something as simple as not reporting to her probation officer, or being at a gathering of people where one of the other guests that she didn't know was also on probation. Just her being at the same location would put her in violation of probation.

But none of the above mentioned matters! She was in jail. Jail is supposed to be a safe place of confinement. Being Confined is the punishment. Being removed from society is the punishment.

She was injured and needed medical attention and was refused, the normal procedure an every day occurrence . This is not some 3rd world country or a terrorist we are talking about here!

Sheriff Joe has some good ideas and heck, how can you hate a guy who loves and has done so much for animals. But I'm beginning to think that is all a front! And this man wants to be our next Governor?! ..Joe seems to be a politician to the core and is as deviant and deceitful as his guests residing in his facilities.

Voluntary chain gang is good. The inmates get to get out a little bit and maybe learn something.

Pink underwear, OK, good publicity stunt.

As time goes on, things are getting worse.

.. 2 meals a day, one, being breakfast at 3:30 AM

.. Food with mold. Sheriff Joe proudly advertises his daily menu of 2 bologna sandwiches, if you're lucky. He forgets to mention you also get a rotten orange with your 2 bologna sandwiches, .. EACH AND EVERY DAY. Did you know the inmate has to pay for all their meals?

.. Over crowding.

Sheriff Joe wants to make a name for himself by treating people worse than the animals he champions. People are not animals. (We would like to know what he did about his hack, that just put the kittens in the trash compactor in his jail.)

The Sheriff's attitude is that you don't need to provide anymore than a certain amount of calories for a person. Food for people sometimes needs to be provided more frequently, depending on the individual's metabolism.

I wonder if Sheriff Joe knows that certain ethnic groups have faster metabolisms and need to be fed less, but more frequently. If a person is hypoglycemic, they could have serious problems based on his autocratic decisions.

One other thing you should keep in mind, my friend, ..75% of the people in jail have not been convicted of any crime. For example, some are in jail prior to trial because they can't afford bail. If an angry ex-wife gets a wild hair up her butt and decides to wreak havoc in the life of her ex-husband, all she has to do is swear out a false affidavit that he is behind in his child support.

Guess what? Sheriff Joe sends out his goons and hauls the guy to his jail. Many of these guys are innocent. It's a vendetta, and all about power. But this is not the old country, Joe. ..Typical politics and corruption at work to get elected? Same corruption in prosecutors offices across our land, ..another Rip-off Report for another day.

When medical and dental problems are encountered, individuals have to pay for their visits to the doctor or the dentist. If they can't pay, too bad, no treatment.

It's been reported to the Rip-off Report that individuals with severe wisdom teeth problems with severe abscess infections, inmates with severe fevers, intimates on medication, all get ignored, waiting weeks for treatment. Talk about torture, ..one inmate had infected abscessed wisdom teeth problems. It took several weeks to see a Dentist, then another four weeks to get the teeth pulled, ..but hold on, ..NO medication before pulling the teeth and NO medication afterwards.

Here are some questions for you:

Should these people pay for treatment for problems that arise from incarceration? How are people supposed to get the money to pay for the treatment?

Let me tell you, that the jail is used as a leverage on the inmates. Let's say you want to send your daughter some money so that she can have toothpaste and soap. How would you do that? In Joe's jail, you can't just hand it to them.

Here is a real scam that has been going on for a long time, ..If you want to get around sending the money through the jail, You can mail it directly to the people that run the Commissary, (some guys "old lady") ..Anita Faccio at P.O. Box 91442, Phoenix 85066, .. but that service would cost you 20%. Is that legal?

Let's say you send $50.00 to be put on your daughter's account with the Jail directly. Did you know, when she does get the money, it would be $20.00 not the $50.00 you sent, Sheriff Joe takes $30.00 off the top for her meals for the month?

Did you know she would only be able to use it to get things from the commissary? A trial size of toothpaste costs $5.00 and a hotel bar of soap costs $3.00, and don't forget to add in the 20% service fee. Your fifty dollars just got her a trial size toothpaste, a hotel bar of soap, and left her with a $10.00 credit to use at the commissary. Worth it? Would you be angry? ..I guess using the PO box by sending it to Faccio would be an inmates best bet.

Medical attention and Dental care - a BIG problem.

Inmates being gouged by the commissary.

And now... Torture of inmates. What next?

I Sincerely hope your daughter or anyone else's daughter or son never has this happen to them; if you have one. But, if it did ...what would you do?

Where's all the money going to? What is the state and the county paying for anyway? Seems Joe has all his affairs/expenses pretty much covered?

Seems to me a Federal Investigation should be done.

A RIPOFF REPORT FOR ANOTHER DAY:

After all this, to add insult to injury, once these individuals are released, then, these ex-drug users / Alcohol users who are on probation, get thrown in halfway houses filed with drugs, in nasty neighborhoods, setting them up to fail again. Judges and probation departments know this is a problem, but they still keep sending them to these filthy drug ridden housing facilities.

The probation departments hands are tied as they are understaffed, under-paid and many of the probation officers are so nasty and cynical that the individuals are on a crash course for failure.

FACT:

Arizona has the highest number of people on probation in the US 3 times greater than many states including California!

What's this?
I just received a copy the Phoenix New Times, dated March 14-20, 2002, and read the article, Torture Chamber: Did Eric Vogel die because of another beating in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jail? written by Robert Nelson.

I almost wish I had never read it! All my concerns and fears were just confirmed! I no longer feel like an over-worried mother, but instead, I am terrified and have a feeling of such helplessness. My heart goes out to all the families who have lost someone they loved, especially in this terrifying way.

We, "THE PEOPLE" .. we, the people, .. "we means "US", you and me. We don't or can't do anything about the rules or procedures of people incarcerated, or perhaps "we" agree with the way the "Toughest Sheriff" in America, the "CEO" of Maricopa County Jail rules and punishes. Perhaps we don't care unless it happens to us, personally, and then who do YOU expect to come to your aid? Have you ever been the brunt of governmental harrassment or overbearance in any way? Government which is not "of the people," is necessarily an enemy to the people.

We must agree that the people incarcerated are there for one purpuse... to be punished. I was under the impression that being "in jail" was supposed to be the punishment. I was under the impression that if a person didn't "play by the rules" of society, you were taken out of "society" and placed in confinement called jail or prison. Being in jail was the punishment!

After reading the New Times Article, I can't help but wonder why, "WE THE PEOPLE" allow our "Tough Sheriff" to beat people to death, or to leave my daughtrer lay on her bunk for days to bleed to death. Isn't that against the law? Why aren't his actions as bad or worse than the people he is punishing while they are in his jail? Why do "we the people" allow this to happen over and over again? Too many people have come forward with these horror stories for us to believe they were just rare or unusual situations. That pattern that has developed is that of the stereotypical sadistic prison guards, who get their jollies inflicting pain on others.

When Sheriff Joe first became our Sheriff, I believed he was strict and needed to be. The more educated and now more involved I have become with how he became America's Toughest Sheriff, the more I pray my daughter will be able to JUST be punished for her mistakes ..and not die. I don't believe there is a death penalty for violation of probation in this State. I just want her to be able to get healthy and move on with her life. I want her to have the chance to learn from her mistakes, and not have this rather minor technical infraction demand her life. With the extra punishment being given to her from our Sheriff, above and beyond what the court sentenced her to, I hope and pray she will have the strength to make it. I would hope that "YOU the People" would want the same.

Do "WE?, ..the People"???

*Update: Still Stapled in Jail ..A brief update on the current location of my daughter..

AUTHOR: - ()

To refresh your memory on where we thought my daughter would be after she left the hospital:

When I visited with her on Tuesday, March 19th at the hospital, my daughter told me they originally told her she would be going back to Estrella Jail that day and would be transported back to the hospital the next day, Wednesday, to have her staples removed. She asked the Doctor to allow her to stay an additional evening so she could have the staples removed from her surgery and then to return to the Jail.

On Friday, March 22, she called me and told me they returned her to Estrella Jail the day before. It was 4 PM Friday when she phoned and she informed me she still had the staples in from the surgery. She also said she had no idea of when she would be returned to the hospital to have them removed, but she was very uncomfortable and found it impossible to sleep. She said she is only allowed medication for pain every 12 hours which isn't enough to allow her to sleep.

Although I was greatful to hear she was still alive, I can't help but feel that Estrella Jail, with a chest full of staples is not the most comfortable or healthy enviroment for this "part of her journey". Five days ago, she nearly died .. just how far or fast can you go in five days? Aren't our inmates worthy of basic human rights? If this happened in Russia, I'm sure many of us would be pointing our fingers and hopping up and down.

As a concerned father, I certainly sympathize, ..But

AUTHOR: - ()

But as with most things, there is more to the story. I hope that my story will be permitted to be told here, and that you will consider it in relation to your own daughter and her DUI conviction - and her failure to obey the law.

On June 27th, 1999, around 5:30 pm, my 17 year old daughter was waiting to turn left into our neighborhood when a drunk driver in a Toyota Camry going 55 mph hit her from behind.

The impact knocked my Pontiac Bonneville 35 feet down US 60. The trunk lid ended up on the roof, and the car bent in half. Her seat back broke and she ended up in the back seat. And then, amazingly, she walked (limped!) back to try and help the other driver - who was too impaired to even realize what had happened. The miracle is that we had just asked her to drive the Bonneville home and we took the smaller car. Had it been reversed, she would not have survived the impact.

The other driver was never prosecuted, and my daughter still has problems with her knee. So, you might do well to consider the other possibilities of DUI. I said all that to suggest this: your note seems to want to place "blame", and I understand the impulse. But, while your daughter may not be to blame for her current condition, but she is certainly responsible for being there in the first place - thus placing herself in a position to have this tragedy occur.

If the story is how you relate, I would think that you could seek Federal charges for denial of her rights. In the meantime, I hope she recovers fully. Once that happens, I would ask that someday in the future you consider attending a MADD meeting as a family. Perhaps it will give your family some closure, perspective and insight by talking to families whose children aren't around anymore due to DUI's - their own or others. Thanks.......

Grounds for Massive Civil Rights Lawsuit!!

AUTHOR: John - ()

Based on what you are reporting, I would have to say that you have the potential for a huge lawsuit against Maricopa County.

Check with your county or state bar association for attorney's that specialize in civil litigation.

I would also check with the ACLU for additional help or info.

Best wishes to you and your daughter!!
