I lost my social security card and needed a replacement. I googled (like we all do these days) Social Security replacement card, and the first hit was from simplefiings.com. I admit I did not read the fine print and was charged $48.00 for their "services." The service they provided me was the auto-fill out of the Social security replacement sheet (SS-5) and the address to the nearest SSA office. After vising the local office and finding out that it is totally FREE to file for a replacement card I was furious. I called "simplefilings.com"  to ask about a refund and Alon (the girls name who was the complaint supervisor) was very condescending towards me the whole call. She told me "prudent" people would have read the terms of service...and "surely you've at least read your refund policy before calling"...I could tell she has taken many complaint calls before and was quite defensive. When I asked her how many employees worked for the company, she avoided it several times. There is a refund policy and if get you taken by these people you have 24 hours for a full and 7 days for a half refund. They say several time that it is better to mail in the paperwork so as to avoid long lines at the office...haha! What a joke! Clearly they want a person to mail in the request for a replacement, because by the time a person finds out it is a free service provided by the gov't, it will already be too late to get a refund. Do NOT use simplefilings.com

How do you mistake the Social Security Administration website for an obviously private website called "simplefilings.com"?  Here's a hint: the .com means "commercial".  As in, it's not a government website.  I think they make it quite obvious that they are not an official government site and that they charge for a service the government offers for free.  In fact, right before you submit the form, there is a bunch of large red text and a checkbox that you have to check to indicate that you've read it.  It says (emphasis mine):

I agree in full to the Terms of Service linked from this page. I understand that until I check the agreement checkbox and click the Submit button below, no information will be submitted to this site. I also understand that the Social Security Administration provides forms, instructions for filings, and new, replacement, and updated cards free of charge. However, I request to use the SimpleFilings service to prepare my SS-5 application and customized filing instructions based on the information I have provided.

I mean, come on!  They even tell you which form you need to get from the SSA (and that it's free).
