I began using SquareUp thinking, "Wow, this company allows me to process credit cards and receive a payment right away?". Well, technically, no. I was advised by a friend recommending SquareUp for my personal training business, that I do not run transactions over $1k.  If you are unlucky enough or don't care to process a $1001.01+ payment, be prepared to have SquareUp withhold funds for 30 days as a security feature to ensure that transactions are not done fraudulently and thereafter, never again to they withhold payments over $1k...or so they say. Still, 30 days to withhold a payment? Odd.

I thought, well, that's easy enough to get by - I'll just never charge over $1k. Or I'll accept smaller payments ran multiple times so that I never have to wait for my money to be deposited. Everything was great until I processed my client's credit card by manually keying the card number in because I conducted an in-home training session and didn't happen to have my SquareUp card swiper.  I processed 3 payments at $999 each. $2002 was deposited in a couple of days and then I received an email stating that the remaining balance of $889.64 would be deposited in 30 days. (SquareUp's cut was $105.36).

Square Up totes: When businesses accept payments by swiping cards with the Square card reader, we deposit all funds into the bank account each evening.

Here's the fine print that's not provided upfront or during a transaction to inform the business owner of a potential 30 days deferment:

Manual entry (card not present)$2,002 deposit limit
*(During any trailing 7 day period)36 hours (first $2,002)30 days (remainder of payment deferred)
* If you accept more than $2,002 in card-not-present payments during any trailing seven day period, *Square will defer depositing the amount in excess of $2,002 for 30 days.
* If you foresee yourself  and your staff primarily making manually entered transactions and accepting more than $2,002 in a given week, write in here. We'd be happy to increase your deposit limit to an amount that works with your business.

Really, SquareUp? Let me take you up on that offer.

Here was my letter requesting an increase my deposit limit:
Hi,

I am requesting that you please increase my limit on manually entered payments. I ran my client's credit card manually to pay for training when I conducted an in home visit & not at my facility where I keep my square up reader.

I am in need of the full amount of funds as soon as possible due to equipment/marketing purchases/expenses that need to be paid by Monday using the funds my client provided......if it's a security feature, I understand that, but can't you verify her transactions by contacting her directly to verify account activity? Please help! I have a bill of lading due in 3 days.

And this was their response:
Hello,
Thank you for submitting an application. After reviewing all information related to your account, we are unable to increase your weekly payout amount at this time.

Unable, no. Unwilling, yes.
