I was asked by South University to teach biology and anatomy after they saw my C. V. at Higher Ed .com. I am a retired physician teaching anatomy and physiology and microbiology at local colleges in my state. When they reviewed my credentials, they wrote to tell me that I did not hold a degree in biology or anatomy and could not teach. I have since complained to the AMA. They are very concerned that a so-called university does not recognize an American trained M.D. as a qualified expert in biology or anatomy. I continue to be shocked. That's like telling Jimmy Hendrix he doesn't know how to play the guitar. This school is up to something very fishy. Do not go to college on campus or online at South University or its affiliates.

Credentialing

AUTHOR: Christopher - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, July 06, 2012

I am hired almost yearly now based on my degree. There is no grandfathering.
I was recently hired by Kaplan to teach for the MCAT test, as well as the University of Phoenix to teach Anatomy, and Columbia college to teach biology.
Be aware, as South University is, that I also have residency and fellowship 6 years beyond medical school. I have spoken with credentialing bodies at the University of Colorado and Colorado State University, 2 universities where I teach. Quite frankly, they consider South University a second rate institution and feel that there is a lack of professionalism on SU's board, or they are having accreditation problems and are fearful of hiring teachers, as you infer, outside a specific discipline.
All agree, however, that their conduct here is very puzzling. Again, if this is going on in their credentialing department, how are their other departments conducting themselves? As a physician, business man, and educator, my observation is that they appear disconnected and leaderless.

accreditation

AUTHOR: Jeanski - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, July 06, 2012

I've worked in higher ed for over 20 years (including sitting on accreditation committees), and I think I can explain this.  SU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).  Of all the regional accrediting bodies, they have the strictest standards.  Their requirements for faculty including holding a master's degree or higher in the subject area.  As a physician you are probably qualified to teach anatomy in the sense that you had it in med school, but you don't hold a Masters in anatomy.

In the past, a college could hire faculty with a terminal degree (like an MD) not in the subject area if they could adequately demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter (which I'm sure you could).  However, the past 10 years have seen a lot of changes, and this is one of them.  The purpose is to ensure quality faculty and consistent hiring standards throughout the region.

I know it seem unfair, but you were probably grandfathered into the other schools for whom you teach.
