I ordered a box of plain checks for my Sovereign Bank account by calling Deluxe Checks, which is the only provider that Sovereign lists on their form at the end of their checks. I called Deluxe's automated line and placed my order. At no time did Deluxe offer a price or offer a menu option to check the price. I made my order and had it delivered by regular post. I received my checks in a timely manner, but to my surprise a couple of weeks later saw that they had charged my account $39 for a single box of checks. That is a truly a ripoff, and I wonder if it is legal to intentionally withold the price. Massachusetts, where I live, at one time, had price disclosure requirements for retail stores. Does anyone know?
I called Sovereign. They said that my problem is with Deluxe. I disagree. Sovereign is not taking care of its customers, by proving only exclusive contact information for Deluxe. My bet is that Sovereign receives a "marketing" fee from Deluxe for such services. There is obviously a more direct case against Deluxe, but the public would be well served to put pressure on the banks to provide access to reasonable check costs or at least disclose them

Check fee?

Deluxe is who we use to print the checks, it doesn't mean you have to re-order from them. I'm uncertain why you didn't just call the branch when you needed checks. They could have processed the order for you and it probably would have been free. There is an order of free checks included with the majority of our accounts. And yes because you ordered directly from Deluxe there isn't a whole lot the bank can do now. It is just like you going and buying anything with your account it is between you and the merchant should there be any issues.

why do paper
AUTHOR: Paul - (USA)

Well, for one, no bank or financial will do large volume of printing checks for customers.
They may do a very small (less than 50) but they will be blank ones... if that.
$39? sheesh, I paid $50 for 500 checks and I did that 15 years ago.
I havent re-ordered checks since though I have re-ordered deposit slips a lot since.
I have been a online banking user for 20+ years and rarely write more than 5 checks a year.
In fact my checks still have a previous phone # on them.
As far as being online, getting and having extra accts at the same bank , often gets one free online banking... otherwise it would be $200 a month...
I have always had free everything per having checking/savings/mortgage at the same bank.
Like others said here, googling is such a great tool, paying $39 for any amt of checks is nuts.

Banks Don't Print Checks For Customers

Because they can't compete. Neither do CU's. You did choose the most expensive way of going about getting checks, of that you can be certain. If you do a google search, you'll find out what the others are talking about.
Your complaint should be against the printing company, and not the bank. Best of luck to you.

How, again, is the bank responsible for your lack of due diligence?

The company I get my checks from (not the one my credit union lists) offers discounts as the amount of checks you order goes up...still not cheap. There are MANY companies printing checks and you should learn to use Google to locate them.
The one I order from is checks unlimited....I WON'T recommend them to YOU however, as I'm sure you could find a problem with them and hold ME responsible. Your bank likely has NO connection with the company you used and also doesn't likely track the prices of their checks. IF there was NO pricing information on their site (Kinda hard to believe) I'll bet they had contact information so you could call and ask.
When you're ready to buy a used car, let me know, I've got some friends in the business that would LOVE to do business with you.

Lessons

Hopefully you can take some lessons from this.
and I wonder if it is legal to intentionally withold the price.
- Did you ask or in any way try to find out what the price was before you ordered it? Had you asked and they outright refused you would have a case, but I would bet that you never even tried to find out what the price was. Because if you had and they refused..why would you continue the order until you found out?
There is obviously a more direct case against Deluxe, but the public would be well served to put pressure on the banks to provide access to reasonable check costs or at least disclose them
- Where did you get the idea that you must order checks from the bank? Where do get the idea that a company can't charge what ever it wants? You obviously have Internet Access and there are many companies who will print checks for a much lower cost. But it is up to you to shop around.
Think of it this way. Is it the gas stations responsibility to tell you that there is a cheaper station down the street. Is it a plumbers job to tell you that you could get the job done cheaper by others. Of course not, so why is it the bank's responsibility to tell you that checks may be found cheaper someplace else.
