so we talk for about 5min and no luck
then i left then called the store to ask for the district manager ,so she replied with come back into the store and we may could help you

i went back and it was the same crap

It's 5 years later, but anyway...

AUTHOR: Anonymous, Brooklyn, NY - ()

I just bought two flash drives in Staples.

I only found this page because I was trying to find out what the Staples return policy is for unopened flash drives.

Are they electronics or office supplies? I would think they have more in common with unopened unexpired ink cartridges, than with Laptops or Cameras. That should make them eligible for anytime returns of unopened items, which seems a lot more reasonable than the 14 day return policy for electronics.

There is no reference to the status of this item in their return policy information, so one would likely make an assumption, based on their own logic. And then I suppose Staples can claim that the item fits into a more restrictive return category, and refuse to refund. I don't think that would be fair. So the way they present things, the return policy as stated is not clear. This can in fact be an opening for unfair tactics, a.k.a. "ripoffs".

FYI:

They still print a survey request at the bottom of the receipt!

The reason anyone would have removed that part is, it is under a dotted line that says ----CUT HERE----. It's not unreasonable for someone to think that that part is not really part of the receipt. I certainly would have thought exactly that, if Google hadn't listed this link in response to my query! The survey part has no purchase information on it, contrary to your accusations toward the agrieved party here! I like Staples, and I think a lawsuit is a bit much, but Mr. X's consternation, and aggravation is actually quite understandable.

Twenty dollars is only a small amount of Money when it's some other guy's loss!

How, exactly were they also "racists?"

I would bet you're black...right?  And they wouldn't have denied the refund if you weren't....wow.

Good luck with your "Small claims court lawsuit"...you haven't a chance in H*LL of winning it.

YOU don't set their returns policy, they do, and they ARE following them.

Folow the link another rebuttal provided.

case in small claims court?

AUTHOR: Vimot - (U.S.A.)

For what? If you called the executive offices and they set the management straight, we have to assume that they took care of you to your satisfaction. So where's the case against them? See, it's statements like this that ruin your credibility. Unless you think you're explaining your story to Miss Landers' 4th grade class. Because of that statement I do not believe any part of your story. Sorry.

court huh

AUTHOR: Blackbird03 - (U.S.A.)

what does it cost to take a billiondollar company to small claims court... dont say you attempted to a return with a receipt because you didnt. you attempted to do a return with half a receipt. why would anyone rip off a survey. you cant mail it in or anything. after reading many of these post about staples, it seems like they just get 1 too many disgruntled customers. probably because the larger retailers have given up with putting up with the bs from people like you.... no offense but im going to keep shopping there, maybe you should shop online behind your computer screen where you belong.

So Not True

AUTHOR: Iknoweztech - (U.S.A.)

1. Staples' Return/Refund Policy on Electronics Items is 14 days with a receipt. So, even if you had a receipt, you are already in violation of the return policy which is printed clearly on on the Back of the receipt. If you did not have a receipt, the store manager can look up a receipt for you only if you have used your Staples rewards card, or if you paid by credit card and have that card on you in store for the lookup process. Without a Rewards or Credit card, the manager may only look up a receipt at two week time intervals; meaning that you must pin-point within a two-week time interval the date you purchased the item in order for a manager to find it if you do not have a Rewards or the purchase Credit card. With something like a flash drive, which Staples may sell at dozens per day, it would be impossible to figure out which item purchased and which receipt was yours without a credit card or Rewards card number.
2. Staples' managers will readily process a return outside of the 14 day return policy so long as you have a receipt SO LONG as the item in question is still carried by Staples. If it isn't an item still carried on the shelves, then there's 2 problems: you are months or even years outside of the return policy date, and there's absolutely no way for the store to return the item since it won't even ring at the register. Was the flash drive you were attempting to return still an active item in the store?
3. Ripping off the survey from the receipt isn't a problem at all. And in fact, for many months now, the survey is printed at the TOP of the receipt, not the bottom as you suggested. If in fact the survey was at the bottom of the receipt, then you purchased this item a LONG time ago and are trying to pull one over on Staples, or perhaps this item is from another retail store altogether.
4. The only problem with ripping a receipt is that you may have actually ripped off the date and transaction number from the top and bottom of the receipt. If you have done that, and the store manager cannot locate your receipt in the system via the Rewards or Credit card purchase methods annotated above. You will run into issues here because of the following scenario: The item may have dropped in price since you purchased it. If you paid 20.99 for the item a month ago, it could be $7.99 in store now. I think it is HIGHLY likely that the cashier or store manager offered to process the return and offer you store credit since you had no valid (i.e. a damaged) receipt. Likely, you refused since you believe you paid more for the item weeks ago. There is NO way for a manager at staples to override this process, the cash register will process a No-Receipt Return at the current in-store price for any item.
5. It is highly unlikely the Office of the Store President "tore" the store manager a new one. I believe they likely did the right thing and took care of you by offering you some sort of customer service coupon which would be good as cash at any Staples store. There are not many companies out there who go so far out of their way to take care of the customer like Staples does each and every day. Yet, you still go on a site like this and trash the exact company which went out of its way to take care of you. Why don't you share with us what sort of correspondence you received from the Office of the President?
