Sunset Group; Arturo Marroquin V.L.O Officer, Barry Myatt In House Manager, Octavio De La Canal Sales Manager And Crystal John Sales Representative December 07, I purchased a timeshare at Sunset Lagoon resort. I didn't know I'd been scammed until Feb. 08, when they told me that what they had guaranteed was not what I purchased. This is the story of an honest American citizen's fight against Mexican timeshare thieves and Bank of America Miami Florida

June of 2007 we purchased a time share from the Grupo Mayan, we decided to take advantage of our investment and use our RCI in Cancun, Mexico. Our check in was the check in from hell and the room had not one window so we were not happy. Here comes Sunset Group to the rescue. Next day we went to the Sunset Group for a 90 minute presentation. This turned into a high pressure sale which turned into a four hour tour.We purchased a new time share and hey for four thousand dollars more you can join the yacht club. We fell for this hook line and sinker. (No pun intended) They were supposed to have bought out the Mayan Grupo time Share and we made a great investment on what they paid for our purchase.

Still believing we got a great deal we came home and wrote a check for 14,000.00 thinking we only had 3,230.31 owed. PS never knew they issued me a different Bank of America VISA card until I arrived home. Still no light bulb goes off I'm thinking my credit line was not high enough, so that was the reason for the card change.

Then February came and on my other VISA card came the monthly charges; One for 352.25 for time share and second 190.20 for the yacht club. This is when communication started with Sunset Group and customer service. All stating I needed to pay. It was our understanding they were two separate memberships but we they were the finial price we had agreed on at the time of the sale. I could never get anyone to communicate via email or phone. I called five times on a Friday and was told Barry Myatt was busy and would call me back when he was finished with his customer. This went on for three hours when the last call I was told he was gone for the day.

This is when I got the brain storm if Sunset Group could buy out Mayan then why cant Mayan buy out Sunset to help get us out of this nightmare. This is when I found out they never bought out the Mayan time share.

Next I went to Bank of America for assistance since they are involved in this indirectly since I ended up with two VISA Bank of America charge cards. I have been in dispute since February and still no resolution.

My solution was to get rid of both cards and now block all messages from Sunset Group. Sunset is only looking for money not resolution. I am very disappointed not only that I have been taken for a ride in Mexico but Bank of America is aiding this company by issuing out VISA cards at the time of the sale.

I was really beating myself up for being so stupid and getting scammed. After going online I see I am not alone and only hope others can learn from my mistake and not buy time share without doing some investigating before purchase.

It is always best to hire someone skilled to do so, unfortunately in most cases these companies dedicated to cancel timeshares usually cheat for the second time to their customers since they are vulnerable and desperate. If you are thinking of hiring them you just have to make sure you do not have to make any payment upfront ... I found these articles that speak precisely about this, you should read them, that might help you to resolve many doubts:

Our side of the story

To Whom It May Concern, regarding this customer's comments we would like to expose our side of the story. The sales process includes a verification portion in which the contract is signed and all of the important parts of the contract are explained step by step to the customer's satisfaction. When there is a part of the purchase price that is financed by Sunset which is what happened in this case the payment plan is included in the contract so that the customer understands what will be charged monthly. If the customer does not have sufficient money available we do offer the customer the option of applying for a credit card, this process is clearly explained and the customer fills out the credit application.

In this case, after the sale we where in constant contact with our member, we provided her with a welcome call which is our procedure designed to explain the most important points of the contract again to ensure that everything was understood properly. We also have a customer services line where the customers can call at any time. Our customer contacted us in March of 08 saying that she wanted us to explain the monthly payments, we gave her that information over the phone and our member insisted that something was not right, we asked her to please fax or email us her bank statements so that we could discuss them, she agreed and we waited for her documentation. After this she posted her comments on this website and when we contacted her, customer was very angry; we explained that we needed her to contact us, and let us know what her problems are so that we can help her.

Sunset has not done anything wrong in this case and our member has a package with all of our contact information for her to contact us if she needs.

Dealt with Sunset Group and didn't have any problems

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I bought a timeshare from Sunset Group back in December 08. They took me on a tour and i must say their hotels are gorgeous. They explained that if i'm taking vacations 4 weeks a year a timeshare would make sense (i like to stay in nice hotels on big beaches). I bought it and i'm happy with it. Daniel over there was very nice and he gave me a bunch of bonus weeks. I called Member services to inquire about RCI and they gave me the information over the phone. I really don't have anything bad to say about them.

When are people going to learn --TIMESHARES ARE A RIP-OFF!

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

NEVER,EVER BUY A TIME SHARE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY WITHOUT CONSULTING WITH SOMEONE WHO IS NOT INVOLVED WITH THE TIMESHARE IN QUESTION AND WHO SPEAKS THE LANGUAGES AND REALLY KNOWS THE REAL ESTATE LAWS THERE.

YOU WILL BE CHEATED.

Used to be it was ILLEGAL for a foreigner to own ANY kind of residential real estate in Mexico unless they inherited it or paid a LOT of bribes. I do not think time shares per se are legal in Mexico either.

It's odd that property in Mexico would be brokered out of FLORIDA!

The whole thing sounds BAD to me ,starting with the fact that I think time shares and condos are RIP OFFS from DAY ONE!

SINCE THIS HQ OF THIS COMPANY APPEARS TO BE BASED IN FLORIDA, MY SUGGESTION TO YOU IS TO CONTACT THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S CONSUMER FRAUD DIVISION IN FLORIDA AND TELL THEM YOUR STORY. MAKE SURE YOU ONLY SEND COPIES OF YOUR DOCUMENTATION, AND SINCE THESE PEOPLE HATE BAD PUBLICITY SO MUCH, TELL ALL THE LOCAL NEWS MEDIA WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU.

I HOPE YOU GET YOUR MONEY BACK. THAT MUCH MONEY WOULD HAVE MADE A SUBSTANTIAL REMODELLING JOB ON YOUR OWN RESIDENCE TO MAKE IT MORE ENJOYABLE.

Sunset Beach Clubs Rosalie Silva Customer Service and Ferida Barreiro Legal Department Rosalie Silva called two days after statement to request a retraction, and received a threatening letter from Legal 5-22-08 Miami Florida.
On May 22, 08, I received a phone call from Rosalie Silva (customer service)at 1747 Central time, who request I write a retraction from my statement I wrote two days prior on Ripoff Report.

I explained the only way I would write a retraction is to get a return on the money I invested in the Sunset Group. I was instructed to write a statement and send in copies of my Trade In Equity, ( Which they never mad e the trade I am still a member of my old time share) my Work Sheet and all receipts. She could not promise I would get my money back but she would take that information to the right members of the Sunset Group.

In addition I received a letter today which I will type verbatim. (Sound like a threat from a company that has been down this road and is not a reputable company)Letter was written 5-22-08 (two days after my report on Ripoff Report) received 6-2-08.
