On 07/14/13 while delivering freight for Swift Transportation on I-70east & Mile Marker #146 the trailer breaks locked up. After pulling over to the emergency lane, as I approached the rear of the trailer I observed the wires & hoses on fire. Of course I ran to secure the fire extinguisher and by the time I returned to the fire which couldn't have been more than ten seconds give or take, the entire rear underbelly seemed to be engulfed in flames. I immediately crawled under the trailer to attempt to extinguish the fire but unfortunately the fire extinguisher exhausted its fire retardent while the fire were continually spreading.

Seconds after crawling from under the trailer after realizing the fire were out of control, the trailer exploded. I swallowed a considerable amount of smoke both while under and while on the opposite side of trailer attempting to lower the landing gear & disconnecting the lines to allow me to uncouple the tractor from the trailer.

I saved Swift Transportation $120,000.00  for their brand new Freightliner Tractor by uncoupling & driving the tractor approximately 1000 feet forward. Once I was a safe distance from the burning trailer I immediately called 911 which in turn dispatched the fire department.

Given my location in Greenriver, UT in the middle of no where it took the fire department approximately 45 minutes to arrive. Immediately after alerting the police and fire department I informed Swift Transportation which took over 1/2 hour for there emergency roadside to answer.

Finally after over a half hour while the trailer is exploding and engulfed in flames they pickup the phone and after stating my emergency the first question Swift asked me were if their equipment were ok. Total disregard for my safety. I informed Swift roadside I needed an ambulance and was told he didn't no the number.

I literally had to drive myself 50 miles to the nearest safe truck stop and call myself an ambulance. Ater going through emergency on two separate occasions, once on 07/14/13 and on 07/16/13 for excessive smoke inhalation, vomiting a pink substance, eyes burning, headaches & constant ringing of the ears from the explosion, Swift terminate me which is considered a Wrongful Termination while on Workmans Comp. Since they are self insure in AZ their Doctors restricted me from driving a commercial vehicle, no heavy lifting and should sit 90% of the time which since Im now terminated makes it impossible to find another job. This is literally leaving me for dead. No income and they refuse to honor my workmans comp. pay which  is 2/3rds of my gross salary. Literally anything. In the mean time preventing me from seeing my specialist of choice. Swift's fleet manager Ken & their terminal manager Kevin Vadnal, their VP Richard Stocking, HR, Shelia in the safety department, my driver leader Marco, the department head in CSR all sat back and gave me no support what's so ever. And are now using some senior adjuster Mr. Hodson to block me from generating income through the munipulation of their doctors while failing to pay me workmans comp. Only skunks and pigs are capable of such a vicious unethical act. SWIFT TRANSPORTATION TOOK FOUR HOURS TO CONTACT ME AFTER THE EXPLOSION. They left me for Dead!!

As a fellow driver

AUTHOR: OBLIVION - ()

Not knowing all the circumstances involving the situation. It is absurd on your part. To come to the conclusion. That what happened to the above driver. Was driver negligence on his behalf. Many things could cause the brakes to lock up on the trailer and they are things that can happen after you do your pre-trip inspection.

Take for instance, debris off the road could have been the cause. 53 foot trailers like Swift pulls, with the axles sifted forward would leave the airlines where they hang low. Anything could have been picked up from the wind under the vehicle. That would have been enough to fly back and tear a airline. Which in turn would have been enough to lock the breaks up.

The above which i stated, happens. That is a fact and it is something that can happen. No matter of how great of a driver you are. Now it is easy to pick on Swift drivers because of the general perception, but it doesn't change the fact. That he may have not been the reason for the brake lock up.

To The Idiot that responded with a rebuttal

AUTHOR: Hassan - ()

Wondered when an idiot would respond. First of all were you there. No you weren't which means to speak on something you know anything about is the first sign of an idiot. Pre Trip and every safety issue covered. The highway patrol didnot write a citation and commeded me with my saftey. I guess you more than myself and the highway patrol. Fruit doesnt fall from the tree..... In lamine terms your parents were probably idiots so you inherited your ignorance honestly. Tip: GET THE ACTIAL FACTS BEFORE YOU FORM AN OPINION ABOUT SOMEONE ELSES BUSINESS!!!!!

PRE TRIP

AUTHOR: from one driver to another - ()

if u had done a proper pre trip then u would have known that there was a problem with the braking system on ur trailer this accedent was 100 percent pre ventable. what u need to do is look at it from a companys stand point and not just ur own.....if it was my company and that happened hell yeah id fire ur a*s no questions asked......if u caused a fire and lost product and equipment....i understand u saved the truck but equipment is both the truck and semi trailer due to ur incompatince then u sir ormadam are no were near a professional anything........i know u had some sort of training and one of the key points on getting ur CDL is proper PRETRIP INSPECTIONS. so with that being said i do not feel sorry for you and u are only the victom of ur negligence ....i would be thanking god above that all it did was cause a fire and not kill a family in a four wheeler. you do not belong behind the wheel of a semi and also swift did not cause this YOU DID

I read this article and Have questions. Your detail of your location fails to describe what state you were in. If it was where I think, Vail Pass, your trailer caught fire because you had no idea how to descend off the mountian and you over heated the brakes which is driver error. If my guess is correct this is why you were terminated. This is another time I ask how long you have been driving and how old are you. The 35 MPH speed limit is there for a reason.

What few new recruits know is companies can go into the computer system on board the truck and pull data regarding your driving. That is most likely what happened in this case and speeding and breaking down the pass caused the burn

Turn your 4 ways on turn your engine brake on and choose a lower gear say 6th to start. then start down the pass with this and a light braking you should make it down safely. Your trainer obviously did not teach you properly.

Truck driving schools give the basic driving, shifting and backing but they don't prepare them for the real thing. Just because an unlicensed instructor at the DMV hands them a license does not mean they can drive yet.

This is why we are trainers not mentors. These young kids or newer drivers regardless of age do not have the experience to handle some of these roads

They can only do this if you let them.

AUTHOR: MartyMarsh - ()

You stated that they wouldn't let you go see your own doctor, HELLO, they can't stop you unless they own you and I don't think that is the case. Also comp lawers are a dime a dozen that will take your case and wait for a settlement.

What has actually happen here is your breaks caught on fire and then your tires blew up, and you where injured trying to save their equipment and the only hope you had of putting out that fire is if it had just started. But apparently it had been burning for a little while is why your extinguisher wouldn't put it out.

Go see your own doctor and then go talk to a lawer, these crooks may keep you out of the trucking industry, but they will have to pay for the privilege. I do wonder why the cops wouldn't call you an ambulance. Just so you know, I'm a nobody, but I have driven truck for 39 years. Good luck and God Bless.
