We bought a brand new Sylvania television. It was in our second home and was not used very often at all. 5 days after the 1 year warranty the television would not stay on. It kept shutting off. We called the store we purchased it from and they indicated that were problems with that model and the complaints they heard were the very same thing that was happening with our television. We called Sylvania and they just said there is nothing they can do. I am thinking Panasonic maybe be the better purchase

Sanyo, Philips and some other off brands sell at a "bargain" price. It's not that the companies are just benevolent.Something in the sets isn't up to the same standards as sets selling for much more.
It's a trade-off, you need to be able to live with.Other sets can fail just out of warranty too, but the odds are much better they won't.
Consumer Reports lists expected failure rates on TV's (and other products). Check them out.
Sorry your set failed, that's indeed frustrating and it's probably not worth putting any repairs into it.

Sylvania is no longer an actual company, but only a brand name put on electronics by a South Asian manufacturing company. And, yes, Panasonic is known worldwide as a very reputable company with outstanding customer service. Add to that their award winning line of plasmas, and you can't go wrong.
