I have the misfortune of carrying a $200 credit limit Target Red Card

Last month july 23, 2013 I made a payment online late evening but not before midnight because after midnight would be the 24th at least that is what i have been taught.

Assuming i was ok making my payment on the 23rd WHICH IS THE DUE DATE!

I called Target Red Card and asked them to reverse the unjustified charge they said no

beacuse i made payment after 5 PM according to them and i made it online it recorded as payment on the 24th

to make matters worse i was told by their manager that had i made that payment over the the phone I would have been ok

IS THIS A DOUBLE STANDARD OR WHAT!

Im thinking the fastest way to make it online since it leaves a time stamp, this manager agreed i was right but i was wrong! acoording to their policy, so now my payment wont have any worth ill be where i was 30 days ago what a sleazy way to ripp you off.

If you call Target Red Card, never does it mentiion the exact hour your payment must record It only gives you the date

and when you make it online on the due date it stamps for the 24th unless you make it early that day.

This is sure way to fatten up the bottom line for these quasi crooked banks and pad the bottom line of their CEOs

We need  one and only one standard , For example when the post office says POSTMARKED FOR SUCH A DATE

THE HOUR IS ALWAYS MIDNIGHT LOGICALLY WHEN THE DAY ENDS WHICH IS CORRECT.

Bottom line if target tells me my due date is he 23rd than it should be the 23rd not the 22nd and a half!

You Learned Incorrectly

As others have already indicated, when you make a payment on the due date in the late evening - you are late.  Generally, the rule of thumb for online payment is any payment made online on the day due - is late.  Most websites list this as part of their T&C's.  Even if you find a website that allows a payment on the date due - the end of day (west coast time) is about 12 noon.  Anything after...posts the next day.  If Target actually allows you to make a payment between 12 and 5 and not show the payment as late....they're pretty generous - certainly more than any other site I know.

I would not accept the word of an employee who tells you a phone payment would have suddenly made you not late.  The company does charge a pay-by-phone fee, which sounds to me like someone was trying to market additional fees out of your pocket for their bottom line.

If you're looking for standardization - I've already given you what most sites say:  If you don't submit payment 24-48 hours before the due date, then you're late.  The example you cited with the Post Office doesn't apply because every post office has a different last pickup time for postmark.  Some have a midnight deadline but many have a 5PM deadline and if you're late to the 5PM deadline - you aren't going to see that item postmarked until the next day.  So even in the example you provided - there is no standardization.

When it comes to money - midnight is just another minute in a 24-hour day.  In the future, don't wait until the due date and you'll be fine.  Target Red Card...rocks!!  Best of luck to you!!

So you made a payment on the date of after normal banking hours are over and youre mad at them because you didnt pay them on time?? This kinda seems like a no brainer to me. YOU made a ASSUMPTION. You could have called them to ensure that this payment would have gone through at that time. Had you simply taken three extra mins and called the 24/7 call center this wouldnt have happend. Blaming them for what is your fault shows a very poor character. Next time just pay them one day early.

You know what happens when you....

You know what happens when you assume something..don't you?

Assuming i was ok making my payment on the 23rd WHICH IS THE DUE DATE!

- You made it LATE in the evening Pacific Time.  By law a company must have a "cut-off" time no later than 5PM local time.  Anytime after 5PM and you are subject to it being considered late.  Some companies allow it to be entered up to 11:59PM..but again that is very often East Cost time..meaning 8:59PM Pacific Time.

to make matters worse i was told by their manager that had i made that payment over the the phone I would have been ok

- NO it is NOT.  Because the On-Line system is automated and set up for certain standards.

If you call Target Red Card, never does it mentiion the exact hour your payment must record It only gives you the date

- You may be right about calling, but I can just about guantee you that it is on your printed statement.  I also bet that if you actually read the screens as you were making your payment it would have stated the same fact.

We need  one and only one standard , For example when the post office says POSTMARKED FOR SUCH A DATE  THE HOUR IS ALWAYS MIDNIGHT LOGICALLY WHEN THE DAY ENDS WHICH IS CORRECT.

- Yea and if you put the letter in the mail box at 5:30PM and the last pickup was 5PM..it will be postmarked the next day.

Bottom line if target tells me my due date is he 23rd than it should be the 23rd not the 22nd and a half!

- The 22nd and 1/2?????  What the heck does that mean?  By the way if you think Target is Unique..you again are wrong.  EVERY credit card company has cut off times and as I said some will be as early as 5PM local time.    Oh and if you don't like 5PM..just be thankful that it is that late.  Until 2010 there was no standard time so if a credit card company wanted to make it 1PM they could(and many..many did).
