I do not have a chip on my shoulder, and for you to even respond the way you did just fuels the fire.  I have nothing to hide, as I am an honest consumer.  I do not spend my life blaming or accusing people of something just because I don't look right to them.  When I go to most places I am treated nicely and fairly, this is just one instance where I question this particular store's practices.  And yes, I smiled back at this person who followed me to the bathroom.  I'm guessing you are one of those people who say "All lives matter".  Ignorance runs rampant.  How dare you.

Their is a train of thought that only a guility person would be self-conscience about having people follow them.  So it is very possible you were doing something to have them alert to you other than the color of your skin.  In fact your own paranoia probably fed into this self fullfilling prophecy.  As one thing they look for is nevousness, aggitation, constantly looking around, trying to avoid people.  Oh and one other thing is your interaction.  Most likely you didn't smile back at the person, and exhibited probably a bit of nervosness.  Which again is another "trigger" toward something that may have them watch you a bit.  And if you think someone is following you, you probably exhibited at least 2 and possibly all of those traits.  Which in turn causes more attention to be brought on yourself. 

But other things could have done it as well.  When you took your son to the bathroom did you have any merchandise?  What did you do with it while you were in the bathroom? 

By the way, from your own post they never confronted you about any "theft".  In fact they were quite pleasent in helping you with the paper towels.  Oh and someone smiling in your face is NOT a bad thing, and the last time I checked not illegal.  So not exactly where you are going with that.

Now, I am sure you are going to say that "You don't know what it is like to be a black person", or "You don't know what it is like to be a minority".  Where all I have to say is...how do you know?  I am not going to tell you my race because it doesn't matter.  Unlike you I don't see the world as out to get people. 

In fact I actually turn it around sometimes.  If a sales person is following me, I will turn around and ask them a question such as what do you think of this?  After a couple of times they usually go away.  I have been at the register and had the security contact the cashier on the phone.  I could tell it was about me and they wanted to make sure that it was my credit card.  So before the cashier could even get off of the phone and ask me for my ID I showed her my ID and said "Since your security wants to makes sure it is me, here is my ID".  All I could do was think back to those Credit Card comercials in looking at her face...Priceless.

So you really have a couple of choices.  To continue to live with this chip on your shoulder, or when someone smiles at you...smile back.
