TCF NATIONAL BANK Frauduent charge not reversed Minneapolis, MN Nationwide
*Author of original report: $160 Credit transaction
*Consumer Comment: It's Sort of Hard Given What You've Provided..
I am in St Paul, MN. Got the automated call from TCF stating there was suspicios activity on my account. Checked the acount and saw 5 unauthorized charges, 4 from Iowa and one from Apple Valley, MN. I was only reimbursed for the 4 charges originating in Iowa. Of course, the biggest charge is the one TCF is disputing even though I had used my card in St. Paul right around the time the charge was initiated. How can I prove I was in a different city to get my money back?

$160 Credit transaction

In 15 years with this TCF account, I have never done a Debit purchase, I have only swiped my card and chosen a credit transaction. The charge in question was for $160 and the merchant was Wal-Mart. I never thought about the fact that a signature would have been provided, so maybe I do have some recourse. Thanks!

It's Sort of Hard Given What You've Provided..

You don't indicate specifically whether the withdrawl from your bank account or on a credit card account, or whether the transaction was done via a debit card, as an ACH debit, a credit card, or some other method. It's sort of hard to answer your question as a result. However, this sounds a lot like a debit card was used and here is what I do know.
If the transaction was done via a debit card, you're pretty much out of luck. The problem is that the PIN # associated with your debit card is and should be a secret number you are not supposed to give to anyone, including a family member. If the disputed transaction was done via a debit card, then the bank will ask - how did someone other than you - get your PIN number?? Simply saying I was not in town...would not suffice as an answer as to how your debit card would be used for a disputed transaction. I am not saying this happened, but in speaking with banks about this issue, many times, there is a family member, or a "friend" you may have provided your PIN to... initiates a transaction using your debit card and PIN... and you're stuck with the transaction. Banks won't provide any slack to you if a PIN was used for a debit card transaction, regardless of where you claim you are at the time the transaction takes place.
If the transactions were done as an ACH and you disputed it, the bank would obtain the documents from the entity requesting the ACH. If you didn't authorize the ACH, then the transaction is reversed. If you did, it would not be reversed. Much more clear cut.
If it was a credit card, then force the bank to have the vendor provide the documentation. However, if the credit was for less than $25....it would be hard for the vendor to see a signature. I suspect the transaction you're questioning is for more than $25, so...??
Many people will complain about credit cards and the fraud associated with them, but at least disputed credit card usage provides an individual with appropriate recourse if there is a disputed transasaction. A debit card provides an individual with almost no recourse whatsoever in the case of a dispute.
Best of luck to you...
