Many of Temple Emanuel's wealthiest harass non wealthy new members. More established members are notorious in pressuring new wealthy members into harassing new non wealthy members. Minor harassments include verbal abuse near doorways, stalking, and petty 'dirt digging' you might expect from competitive young teens.

Friday night service is dominated by this strange elitist group in the formal service room. Early Saturday mornings, in a not so cozy religous school classroom, you may have found me amoung fellow middleclass people. Non wealthy are tolerated here.

There is not much scratching of the surface in this open hostile environment. The words "I am so glad you came" should really mean it. A temple is a house of worship, populated by a people who were once strangers in a strange land.

A Note From A Non-Wealthy Member

AUTHOR: AviDavid - (United States of America)

I was shocked to read that you had that experience at Temple Emanuel and I am sincerely sorry you feel that you have experienced such treatment by your fellow congregants. I personally have never experienced a segregation of classes by those associated with the Temple; as you stated, "we were once strangers in a strange land."

As a person of the non wealthy new member category, I have found everyone, regardless of economic status, very friendly and opening.

As far as harassment....it was nonexistent. I am very keen on picking up on harassment. My childhood taught me that. So I can say that I have never been harassed in anyway shape or form.

I started going to Temple Emanuel a few years ago and every person from temple staff to the Rabbi's have been so welcoming and gracious with my wife and I. Their Friday night service (Erev Shabbat) is refreshing and enjoyable as compared to other Synagogues in the area. Shabbat morning Torah Study is fantastic, it is focuses on the message for the weekly Torah porton. The Shabbat morning service is usually a smaller service that provides a more intimate setting.

So from that stand point I, a non wealthy Jew & member of Temple Emanuel, have had the opposite experience than the individual above.
