To everyone who might be considering the services of some company like The Tax Club, whether they are legitimate or not, I highly recommend you invest your own time, educate yourself, and use something like TurboTax instead. You will be more in control if you really know what you are filing, although it takes more effort. The Tax Club purports to be experts; and although they did do the job, they did an incredibly poor job, all the while trying to milk as much money out of me as possible. This morning, I wrote the following letter to the Tax Club. I think it speaks for itself. ------------------ I am extremely dissatisfied with my membership, and would like a FULL REFUND. Your review of my 2005 tax return did not offer me any new insights or change anything. This year, when I signed up expecting help with setting up a business and education on related tax law, half of the sessions you had with me were primarily to sell me some other service I didn't need or sell me a partner's services. The sales representatives were VERY pushy, yet often quite vague on exactly why I needed this service, other than it would "help" me organize my taxes or something like that. On the occasion of my turning down some corporate record tracking service which was going to cost about $2000, the salesman ("Mike") seemed very put out and unfriendly. I was expecting that at least you would do a good job on my taxes, so for that reason I decided to continue my membership at that time. However, your tax "help" has been dismal at best. Your online system looks like a cheap imitation of TurboTax, and many of the forms are buggy. I was able to enter my information anyway, and submit it. You took MONTHS to get moving on it, even though it was past the tax crunch season. Then, when you finally sent me the tax return this month of August, I reviewed it only to find at least one major error. You put my rental property's mortgage interest under my personal deductions AND ALSO as an expense on the Schedule E form. I understand this is not allowed. In the end, in spite of making an error which might have tilted the taxes owed "in my favor," you calculated that I owed $1903 in taxes. When I ran my taxes through TurboTax, which was a breeze compared to your website, with the help of their many questions and online information I was able to get a tax REFUND of $48. So instead of saving me money, you potentially cost me nearly $2000 in taxes AND made an obvious error that might trigger an audit! Plus, you charged me $1018.90 as an initial membership fee, and ongoing charges of $19.95 per month, or nearly $240 per year. TurboTax charged me a total of about $99 including the Audit Defense option to help me in case of an audit. On another issue, I have already contacted you twice about being billed $50 per month, when I was promised $20 per month at the time I signed up. You have finally, on the second time I contacted you about it, rectified that. Thank you. However, the entire impression I now have of your organization now is one that does not really have my own interests in mind, makes major bungles, would have LOST me money on taxes instead of saving money, does not really educate me on taxes, and is only interested in taking advantage of every opportunity to wring money out of me. Quite the opposite of your stated goals. I am extremely disappointed. I respectfully request a FULL REFUND of my initial membership fee of $1018.90 as well as the remainder of the $19.95 per month for the months of February, March, April, June, July, and August of this year. In addition, I have a record of a single charge of $29.95 on June 5, 2007. I do not know what this is for. In total, please refund me $1168.55, and CANCEL my membership.
