I am considering enrolling in the Electrican Course with Thomson Education Direct, a distance learning school based in Scranton, PA. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has had experiences as a student, whether they be good or bad, so I can make an informed decision as to whether to enroll or not.
At this time I have no complaint against the company, I am just asking for advice from current and former students. I also welcome answers from Thomson Education Direct concerning my questions.
My specific questions/comments about Thomson Education Direct are:
1. The quality of the course material. Is there a lot of hands-on training and not just theory in the courses being taught?
2. What type of financial aid, if any is offered.
3. The percentage of students who enroll in their courses who actually complete them.
4. What types of employers hire their students, and what the job placement rate is of students.
Thank you for your help.

Great School

I was a student of Thompson Education Direct in 2003. I took the plummbing course and had hand on experiences. They sent me everything that I needed for hands on. I really enjoyed the class which took me about 6 months to complete. It was worth every penny. Of coarse if you really want alot of hands on, then you should consider classroom learning.
Thompson is a great school. They are there for you and real people do answer questions for you. The course I took was difficult enough and a chellenge for me. I did receive a diploma and was able to get a job.
I am not sure how the electritians course is but check it out if you are not sure.

I am currently taking the Travel Agent course with them. I took the Administrative Assistant Certificate course in 2003-2004. I felt the Admin course was pretty in depth and the Travel Agent course seems ok. I would not advise however to take anything that one really needs hands on in learing unless its something computer based. You won't learn enough about the really technical stuff. However if you wish to take it for personal knowledge/enrichment and you can afford to by all means take it. There is nothing better in life than a well educated/informed individual.

I didn't encounter any problems while being a student of thomson education direct. The only thing that had me concerned over time, was that the money i was paying, it felt to be too much for the little information they taught me. I was enrolled for the teacher aide certification. So, maybe the course you are looking into might be different. Sorry, I couldn't be of more direct help to you.

accreditation
AUTHOR: Karen - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Friday, April 14, 2006
i asked the school to send me proof to see if they were actually accredited. they only sent me a letter of reassurance. they only repeated their answer to me from when i called them on the phone and asked them to prove it in the first place. it was just a waste of time.

Dont Waste Your Money! Dont waste your money on something that wont do you any good
AUTHOR: Leah - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Wednesday, May 25, 2005
My husband is an electrician and he ordered it to see if it was worth the money. It isnt. He said it looked to him like it was written by 5th graders for the use of 3rd graders. Dont waste your money on something that wont do you any good at all in the real world. Your "teachers'" responses are a crap shoot, as well. You really dont know who is on the other end of the telephone or the computer and if they are REALLY qualified to teach the subject. There is NO hands on training. It is a correspondence course, and not a very good one at that!

don't go through this company, thompson education

my husband and i both had bad experiences with thompson education direct, formally ics. i finished a course in medical insurance, and got a diploma, but was told by top people, that people who use distance education are not hired. as far as your electrician courses, my husband ordered this course, he started the very first part, and found out by master electricians they will never, ever hire people who take this course, there not accepted by any electricians, even for the state test, you would have to take one in a classroom. i hope this helps...
