Summary: I found an Ad on Craigslist, Fresh out of College and on my way to Graduate School. Once you apply for the job, you receive an email like this. (Posted at the bottom) You get a phone call from an Administrative Assistant. They say your interview is tomorrow, and you have to dress Business Casual.

Day One the Interview: They Ask to arrive at the Company about twenty (20) minutes prior to your scheduled interview time. You fill-out a paper application and give them a copy of your resume. About 15 to 20 minutes later, Hector Marun the man in charge of the particular office of T.O.P. MARKETING GROUP comes out and introduces himself. About 45 minutes later he comes back out and says you we have to wait, because a few interviewees are running late. Why wait on them you ask? Why not just interview those of us whom arrived early and have been here for nearly an hour, and interview the others when they arrive or another time? Well, there's an answer for that. The reason is that the interview is conducted with Hector, and about 4 or 5 other potential employees, for about 15 minutes. Here's how it works, You all sit in Hector's office One by one he asks you your last few jobs or your most recent level of education completed. He then tells you a little about the Company's background and Mission. Basically the difference between them and other marketing Companies is they do Face to Face Sales (meaning Door to Door Sales) Any questions about sales- He'll keep it Frank. Pun intended. You'll receive a phone call either that day or the next day if you made the cut That's about it interview wise.

Day Two the training:  Congratulations, welcome to the world of Marketing. The " Formal Training" starts around 12:00 or 12:30 and lasts until around 6:15 in the afternoon. Basically, for the first 3 or 4 hours, all Hector talks about is himself and how he's rich and you're poor, but you can get rich too if you come and work for him. Did I mention it's a commission only job? What I didn't??? This is when you find out it's a commission only job, with no base pay or benefits. Oh yeah, you're also not an employee, you're an IC or Independent Contractor. What's the difference? Basically, it means you work for yourself and you're the boss of yourself. Not true. Then reason it's not true is because the company controls your job and how you do said job. Finally, he's done talking about his life lets get to the actual "training"

Ok now you learn that you're selling gas and electricity for IGS Energy an approved Supplier. Nod and smile :-) Everytime I think about this it makes me laugh because its part of the verbatim script ( Another reason you’re not no an IC) I'll add a snippet of the script later

Here are the levels of the pyramid I mean the company and what you will make Per sale

1.) You're a representative you make $18 per sale for Electricity and $25 for gas You have to make 40 sales in one week in order to make leader

2.) You become a leader and you make $18 per sale for Electricity and $25 for gas there are other requirements if I can find my notes I'll add them later

3. You're now a team leader and you make $20 Electricity and $27 for gas

Day Three your First day in "The Field": Finally, it's to start making some money right ad? Well, you thought wrong and I'll tell you why in just a little while. The day starts off and with you coming to the office around 9:00AM. You finally get to meet your team (the co workers who will train and guide you they've been here for a while). During this mornings meeting he introduces the staff to the new people who just completed yesterdays training. You WILL have mandatory meetings For about an hour, we talk about how commission only is better than a typical 9-5 job, how Hector is on the island of opportunity and how we can get to the island if we keep working for him. There's a lot of pep and things for example It's sort of like the locker room before the state championship there's screaming and kicking and chanting. Finally, we go to our team's car and we get ready to make some money :). Oh no, no one told me I wouldn't be getting paid for the very first day and the only one getting paid is the team leader :'(. You do start getting paid after you get the pitch down and can do it really well. Finally, after all that we're making some money Well, no surprise here your team leader get a percentage of everything you make.

Week Two: This is when you learn the a bad thing about solicitation. You need a permit to solicit and guess who pays for it when you get a ticket, YOU DO. in Aurora, the First ticket for solicitation in 2013 last was $100 first ticket and $750 second I’ll add an example at the end. During the training, you were told you cannot lie to people. One day Three with our team leader we learn this is a lie. The company’s term for lying is called slamming. My first day in the field, we “slammed” just about every single customer. Things like did you get the notice from comed or your neighbors are doing it, you should jump on the bandwagon.

My Final Thought:  There are pros and cons of the company

Pros There were team and office nights where everyone one the team or in that office would get together and do things together. It was kind of like a family (every family has lies and secrets) You can earn good money but it can be very hard. Off on Sundays

Cons No base pay or benefits. Its extremely hard to move up to a management position in the company The hours are terrible You come into the office at around 10AM sometimes 10:30AM and sometimes earlier for those mandatory meetings you usually get back to the office and then get to go home at around 9pm Monday-Friday and around 6 on Saturdays you’re off on Sundays(Con to some people)

If you don’t mind working up to 70 hours a week with no guaranteed pay, this is the job for you, if not don’t even bother going to the interview
