I was contacted last week, Oct 8, 2015, by a man who called himself William (who knows if that's his real name) about a job "opportunity" (Red flag #1 - never gave me his full name or said where he was calling from). The phone # he called from is 480-822-7772. He said he had found my resume online and wanted me to come in for an interview. (Red flag #2 - never told me what website he found my resume on.) Before saying yes or no, I asked "what company is this for?" and he said "Transamerica."  Because I was completely blindsided by this invitation for an interview, I wanted to learn more about this before I completely shut him down. I told him I could come for an interview on Monday the 12th.  He told me that he scheduled me for 1PM and that I would be receiving a text from him with the address for the interview (this was Red Flag #3, professionals do not text anything, they email.) Before he hurried off the phone with me I said "Oh, what is this position for?" and he said Director of Marketing. (Red flag #4, he never told me what I was interviewing for.  If you're going to recruit someone for a Director position you certainly do NOT go about it this way).  I also had to ask him who I was interviewing with before he hung up. (Red flag #5)

So the rest of the day goes by, no text.  Friday, Saturday, Sunday...still no text.  Monday morning around 830am I get 4 texts in a row asking me to confirm that I was still going to come in for the interview at 2pm and sent me this address: 23046 Avenida de la Carlota, Suite 410, 4th Floor, Laguna Hills, CA 92653.  (Red flags #6 and 7 - we had agreed on 1PM and he waits until the morning of the interview to send me the details??)  Here's the transcript of the actual text conversation:

Me: Can you please email me a link to the job on their website?

"William": I'm with the actual company and the name of it is Transameria. More details will be given to you at the time of your interview.  (Red flag #8)

Me: Right. I'm just not 100% sure of what job I'm even interviewing for. I would be able to talk more intelligently and be better prepared if I had that information.

"William": This is for financial advisors with Transamerica.

Me: I thought it was Director of Marketing?

"William": It is that's the job title.

Me: The address you gave me, that is an actual Transamerica office right?

"William": Yes it is.

At this point I figure either this is some kind of pyramid scheme or he's a serial killer trying to lure me into a trap.  So I went to the Transamerica website and found the phone # for customer service. I explained my situation to the woman on the phone and she agreed that it sounded suspicious, but she did confirm that the address William gave me was an actual Transamerica office. She said that even to just become a customer service rep she had to fill out a bunch of online forms/applications before she was ever invited for an interview and everyone she spoke with called with their first and last names.  So then she forwarded me on to Human Resources.  I then spoke to another woman and as soon as I said I was calling from California she stopped me and said she has no dealings with jobs in California and that I wasn't the first person to call with this situation. So she forwarded me on to another person, Pat Melcher??, she said he would have more information for me, but I only got his voicemail and haven't received a call back yet.

So at least then I was feeling sure that he wasn't a serial killer, just a serial scam artist.  I texted him back:

Me: I'm going to have to decline. After doing some of my own digging, since I was provided practically no information, I'm finding that this is definitely not the right "opportunity" for me.  Thanks, but no thanks.

William, of course, never responded.  I will not be going to this interview and if you receive a similar call, I suggest you do not either.

They are "financial advisors"  And if you sign up will force you to pressure your family and friends to sign up for their services.  My daughter almost got pulled into that.  There is no salary, it's all commisison and they suck.
