I understand and have similar issue with Turbo Tax

AUTHOR: everydayangel0414 - (United States of America)

A few years ago, I filed my federal and state return with the online Turbo Tax software. The federal return had no issues but state not so lucky. I took my time to make sure I input the values correctly. I tried to print my return before submitting it. I got nothing but black lines through my information. The program stated no errors. I felt confident that everything was correct. So I submitted payment and filed. I get a notice from Turbo Tax and my state revenue department that I underpaid taxes the prior year, have a penalty, and an obscene amount of interest on top of it. The prior year, I paper filed and before receiving the refund check from the state. Someone has to visually inspect the return before going to the next level. The problem seems that when my return was transmitted. The fields that state the amount of tax with held from my paycheck on the W-2 was empty, state taxable income missing, but the field stating you owe alot of money was filled in. See, how can someone that does not make much money and every year receive a refund go to owing an obscene amount in back taxes? Simple answer, you don't! The problem is that when returns are filed electronically. No matter what that paper says is the gospel whether it is right or wrong. I am still fighting to have my situation corrected, and I have the paper in front of me showing the problem. Yet, no one wants to correct it. Forget about the 100% guarantee, it is absolutely worthless and Turbo Tax runs as soon as they find out their wonderful program made a mistake. What I learned? Go to a CPA, when this happens you drag their sorry behind into the tax office with you and tell them to fix it.

A decently written program really should be able to detect suspicious stuff and give you a red flag to recheck. For example, if you forget a digit on one of the figures you enter from your W2, it will not jibe with the other figures, and the software should flag it. I am not saying that Turbo Tax does do this, but it should if it is half-decent.

#3 Consumer Suggestion

Always go with a (good) tax preparer

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

I used to use tax programs as well, since doing one's taxes should be pretty mechanical: you have your income, deductions, etc. But for whatever reason, I always seemed to get different results when I would recheck the numbers, and I have been in the software biz for years. Plus, I would get bored and keep hitting the "next" button when it tried to ask me stuff like "have you been in the military any time between September and December while owning a solar panel?" (of course they did not ask me that, but it got to the point where my eyes blurred over and I just wanted to be done with it).

Going to a crapola place like H&R block is not too much better; they just hire data entry people to basically use the same type of program. Spend a few hundred bucks and get a REAL tax guy to do your returns each year. Most of the good ones have their own business (sole proprietorship), or may have one other guy working for them. They will ask you the right questions, and crap like this will not come up (plus, you can ask them questions BACK).

I know the cost of a real guy may seem like a lot, but it is only a little bit each month spread out over the year, and it is a much better way to go.

Question

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

TurboTax can't read your mind, that is it only knows what you have entered in.  So what did you want them to review?

Are you saying that you entered in the information correctly and TurboTax calculated your taxes wrong?  Because if that is the case they have a 100% guarantee that they will pay any penalties and interest.  It won't get you out of owing the additional tax, but then again neither would any other software.

Are you saying that they somehow should have known what you were entering in was wrong.

Or are you saying that you didn't enter in certain information and somehow TurboTax should have known this.

TurboTax guarantees the accuracy of the software's calculations...

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

NOT your entries.  If you post erroneous figures or ignore any warnings, it's on you. Then IF it's their fault, they pay ONLY the interest and penalties you might have incurred.

If YOU made errors or intentionally entered wrong information and you don't really owe this amount, you should see a tax preparer to check for errors and file an amended return if needed.

Don't delay doing this. Be sure the tax preparer gets ALL your information and ONLY your correct information.
I have been using Turbo Tax for many years on fairly complicated returns and am very happy with it.

I do NOT work for Quicken or any of its companies.

My estimation is, this is YOUR failure to use the software properly.

A good test for you is to compare this return with the previous year if your financial situation was similar.  Good luck to you.
