In 2002 Uhaul allowed a criminal to rent a trailer using my name and designated themself as the pick-up person. Uhaul allowed that person to stick me with the rental costs and gave the equipment to the criminal. Over ten years later I tried to rent a trailer and found out about this fraud and I had to file a police report to get these fraudulent charges off my account.

After spending hours on the phone with Uhaul they told me that their policy remains the same and basically any person is at risk of having the same situation happen to them. Their policy still allows criminals to make online reservations and designate a 'pick-up' person to pick up the equipment. I have filed a complaint with BBB but Uhaul keeps misleading BBB to believe it is a different issue outside of their control.

Uhaul has not apologized for the  event and has refused to cooperate with law enforcement regarding this fraud and has refused to alter their policy to better protect consumers.

Uhaul is responsible

AUTHOR: Nor7 - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, November 27, 2013

Thank you for the comments but it is in fact Uhaul's responsibility (as well as any company's responsibility) to protect their customers from this sort of thing.

Uhaul is just as much to blame as the criminal in this case.

If I were Uhaul I would make the person picking up the rental equipment present a form of payment and make them responsible for the billing.

How would you handle this if you were Uhaul?

I do not see that it is Uhaul responsibility. Instead of blame everything on them, what is your suggestion to handle an online reservation?

Using online to service anybody, a service provider has to trust the buyer on the honesty of providing his/her information online, and at the same time the buyer has to trust the service provider on legally use his/her information. In your case, your supposely private information was being used without your consent, and this does not take you out of responsibility. Why? Because your private info should not be known by others. There is no way to tell who is using the info in the online service. The service provider has to trust that the person who is using the info is the owner of the info. Then the part that allow someone else to pick up is just a convenience part for them and customers. It is similar to buying stuff online that the billing goes to someone else besides the person who receives the merchandize.

If you want to blame on someone, it is not the Uhaul or you but the identity thief. You need to put your anger aside and you will see a bigger picture of the whole situation. Your situation can be applied to ANY online purchase...
