I moved from Portland Oregon to Denver Colorado in April of 2013. I rented a ubox from the U-haul franchise in St. Johns neighborhood in Portland.
First, I'd like to say that the people at the St. John's u-Haul went above and beyond the call of duty to try and make up for the u-haul company. They even showed up at my house when they got off of work to help load the ubox to help overcome all the time this fiasco set me back.
First, the construction of the box is so poor that it took four hours to get the door open and to repair the bolts that are required seal the door shut. If I didn't happen to have a generator and a powered hack saw we would have never gotten the door open. I paid movers to stand and do nothing while the door was repaired.
Second, after I rented the ubox I found that I had to drop it off at a different location than where I picked it up, then shuttle an empty ubox back to the place I rented it from in the first place to replenish their inventory. Yes, by renting this box you are also promising to use your own vehicle to be a delivery person for the uhaul company.
Third, I was told that my ubox would arrive in Colorado in about ten days. After 21 days I called uhaul to find out where my box was. You guessed it - it's still exactly where I left it back in Oregon. It hasn't moved. They don't know why it hasn't moved but neither has anyone contacted me to let me know there's a problem or that they don't know what to do with it. Yes, they know where its supposed to be shipped. They just haven't done it.
So, I paid about $950 to have a ubox rented and delivered. So far, the only person thats moved my ubox is ME.
No, uhaul hasn't offered anything to offset my losses at paying movers who couldn't work because of their mechanical problems or to compensate me for their logistical mistakes.
