The Unity Center for Practical Christianity of New York City and www.ericbutterworth.com, run by the late Rev. Eric Butterworth's widow, Olga Butterworth, are extraordinary religious scams that are perpetrated upon their unsuspecting, rather desperate-for-answers public. The so-called Unity "religion" appeals to troubled people. It has some positive messages at within its core belief system - such as that God gave people abilities, so they should utilize them - but they also encourage everyone to close their minds to reality and to believe that no matter what is going on in your life, it's "all in divine order." Then they do a logic U-turn and say that if something in your ilfe is NOT going right it's because your energy has "attracted it." So, for example, if you were in one of the towers on 9-11 and had to be evacuated, YOUR ENERGY is what "caused" the terrorists to attack the towers in the first place! I mean, these Unity people are INSANE.

The ones who are running Unity and Ericbutterworth.com are also crooked to the core of their greedy little beings. The "donations" to the Eric Butterworth Foundation go directly to his widow Olga Butterworth's personal P.O. box in Greenwich, CT. Hundreds of people split off from Butterworth Unity several years ago and founded a new Unity church in Manhattan simply because they found out that the Butterworths - Eric was still alive then - and the Board of Trustees of this Unity were LYING to them. At a meeting of tohe membership it became obvious that the entire congregation was being lied to; the people at the meeting knew their combined donations were more than Olga was getting up and lying and claiming they were. Demands to look at the books were not met. When one woman stood up and said that she had something to say, she was informed, "Sit down - you are NOT a member of this organization!" The woman replied that she had THOUGHT she'd been a member for the past 33 years, but the Unity Powers That Be said no, she wasn't. It seems that if you are a member but disagree with the crooks who run Unity, you are suddenly declared a non-member!

Additionally one of the Butterworth's teachers was chastised by Eric Butterworth, in writing, not to use "Jesus Christ" in any of her lectures - because 1/3 of the Unity membership was comprised of former Jews who would not be willing to donate money if they had Jesus Christ thrown in their faces. THAT should give everyone out there SOME idea of what kind of people are running Unity.

The Unity leadership in Unity Village, Missouri, KNOWS that these people in this NY branch are stealing but they do nothing about it - because this group brings in so much money that the headquarters crowd doesn't want to alienate them. So what did they do about Olga Butterworth? Did they dismiss her? No - they ORDAINED HER!

I urge everybody to stay away from Unity on 58th Street in NYC, and for God's sake, not to donate a dime to them.

The last entry is fair and beautifully put.

I am pleased to see the last entry. People in crisis are often drawn to Spiritual Teachings. and oftetrn hope for immediate releif. THsi is not always how it goes.  As the last poster pointed out, churchs are organizations built and populated by people, not God's. I am not denying that spiritual groups have problems, or that there are people who exploit spiritual seekers, far from it. But the Butterworths do not fall into that category, and I have found Eric's teachings wonderfully helpful when used as the last poster suggest. I have little more to add, other than my appreciation for the last poster taking teh time to provide this thread with  those fair and thoughtful comments.

Rich People who Subsidize Churches Don't Have to Hide the Books

AUTHOR: Redsuffragettelightning - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, February 23, 2008

The way I heard it, first the story went that Olga was an heiress...and then there was the OTHER story that went she was the child of an impoverished seamstress. I don't think anyone will know for certain what her real background was, but I know what I saw at Unity, and also what I didn't see. Never, at any time, was there any evidence that Eric and Olga were subsidizing anything there. And if they WERE subsidizing the place, why wouldn't they show their own church members the financial records? Why did they act like the place was broke, if it wasn't?

The best crooks are the ones who manage to create the illusion that they're honest and innocent. The truly great ones can even put on a show that they're generous.

Nevertheless, the Butterworths would not let their church members see the books when we asked for an accounting of the church finances. That fact should speak for itself. It only falls on the deaf ears of their most fanatical followers.

From what I saw, I truly don't think it's advisable to give support of any kind to Unity.

The Universe is Calling; The Ballad Of Eric and Olga Butterworth

AUTHOR: Nothing To Gain - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, January 04, 2008

I am not a member of The Unity Center of New York City, but a frequent visitor who has devoted most of his life to the Study of Truth. I would travel from Connecticut to New York City often, to attend the Sunday Service held at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall on Sunday mornings. I knew membership was available to me but I never felt the need to officially join the church. I felt privileged to experience the depth and beauty of these Sunday morning teach-in's with Eric and Olga Butterworth. My children would accompany me and were exposed to lectures that would help us grow as a family, giving us a practical application of Christianity that formed a strong bond of oneness that we derive strength from every day. Through these teachings we have been able to become better citizens and grow in our understanding of Jesus Christ.
Eric and Olga Butterworth's teachings were deeply rooted in what they would call "the religion OF Jesus rather than the religion ABOUT Jesus. Asking questions such as "What did Jesus believe ?" The central theme to the Butterworth's teachings was that Jesus was born a man who realized his God potential rather than the traditional religious view of God who became man. This teaching was about discovering the "Christ" within yourself i.e. The book "Discover The Power Within You." There were people of many religions who attended the Butterworth Unity services who felt included in this teaching.

This teaching is a depth to be realized and requires the daily discipline of prayer and meditation as the key to understanding. Affirmative prayer, requires stating the Truth principle, resonating with it, and keenly listening to the inner calling of God ideas. It is never praying TO God but FROM God consciousness. Prayer as seeing things from the highest point of view.

This teaching is quite simple but not easy to do. You must question your answers all the time.
The alleged quotes from The Butterworth's that were stated in the attack letter were grossly inaccurate as well as other claims that were stated.

The P.O Box in Greenwich, CT. was not for personal use but was registered to The Unity Center Of New York City. The Butterworth's lived in Greenwich, CT. This was not a secret. Olga Butterworth was a very wealthy woman before she met Eric Butterworth and had no need for the Church donations. I came to know the Butterworth's and had the rare opportunity to study with them in a small group in Greenwich. They never asked for money from anyone. They were very generous and would silently help those in need. Knowing The Butterworth's, the REAL SECRET is that THEY subsidized the Unity Center Of New York City to keep it operating, NOT the other way around.

Regarding the renegade group now known as The Unity Church Of New York led by Rev. Paul Tenaglia holding Sunday Services at Symphony Space? Yes, There was a falling out, which happens in Churches and relationships but I believe to this day that it happened because Paul and his mates were inspired to develop their version of a Unity Church devoted to people in the performing arts. Today BOTH Unity Churches co-exist in NYC, and maybe one day they will merge as one.
The Butterworth's were wonderful souls and I am grateful to write this retort.
