I have received a notice that I am in collection for a debt to Hollywood video that I do not owe. I have a vague recollection of being contacted by Hollywood video a few years ago, and as I recall, I was able to tell them then that I had no debt to them, because it was always my policy to settle any late charges at the time of my next rental. I thought that was the end of the story, and at that time, I had also heard for many incorrect requests for payment for many customers of Hollywood Video, so I could see that I was just one more among many for whom Hollywood Video was trying to collect on debts that had been already paid.
It isn't a great deal of money that they are requesting ($40.11) and it might be worth paying this just to make it go away, but I don't feel certain that it would necessarily be the end of the event if I did pay it, since I believe that it is a fraudulent debt. Does anyone have any more information on Hollywood Video and Universal Fidelity LP? Any recommendations?

I am an attorney in Seattle who represents consumers in class actions and we are investigating this alleged scam. One potential client reported a collection notice like this to the Washington Attorney General and the company responded that it would not pursue the debt any further.
