University Of Central Missouri (UCM)School does not take care of students! Warrensburg Missouri

I am a UCM student and I would like to let all parents and future students know what happened to me and how UCM did not take care of the situation. I was a freshman and I lived in Nattinger/Bradshaw dorm hall and it stormed one evening. I was walking down the main stairs to do laundry when I noticed the double doors were closed, which was not uncommon. I then proceeded to step on the ground floor when my foot slipped out from under me and I then fell on-top of my knee, severely injuring it. I made my girlfriend go and check to see if there were signs up notifying students of the danger; nothing was posted. I called the RA, Mellisa Harder, who told me that this was not uncommon for the basement to flood due to poor weather stripping.
I was taken to the hospital and told by the RA and her boss, who also accompanied me to the hospital, that the school will take care of all of my medical bills. I am a poor college student who is paying his own way through college and I do not have medical insurance. I signed the paperwork and they began treating my injuries at the Warrensburg Hospital. I am now a senor and they have refused to talk to me or return my phone calls. The school claimed that they have sovereign immunity and claimed that the place where I fell was public property, even though access to the dorms is restricted to students and is under lock and key.
I am struggling to build my credit back because this school has neglected the problem and the medical bills have gone to collection due to their negligence. I have no idea what to do but I would like to advise any student who is looking at this university to consider going elsewhere.
