We were scheduled to pick up a Goodyear load in Beaumont, TX this morning 8/25/07 @ 0800 - 1000 CDT. Dispatch had sent a message with the load plan saying that this shipper did not allow more than one driver per truck on the premises at a time and no children or dogs. We assumed that it was like Fed Ex meaning that only one driver was allowed OUTSIDE of the truck and that we wouldn't be able to take the dog out of the truck on the premises. Okay... no problem.

So we head to the shipper and arrive shortly after 0800 CDT. The guard at the gate stated that one of us would have to physically get out of the truck... along with the dog and wait until the other driver got loaded and came back out. The guard also wanted us to "tie up our dog" which was in a dusty gravel parking lot with no shade whatsoever. Not to mention that it was 100 + degrees outside and there wasn't even anyplace for one of us to sit to wait. As you can well imagine, we flat refused to even acknowledge this idea. Our dog is our child and has NEVER been tied up in the entire 7 years of her life and this certainly was not going to be the end of her "not tied up" streak. I simply wouldn't allow it.

So we send a message to dispatch explaining the situation and they advised us to "tie up our dog". What part of NO do these people not understand? Would they tie up their 7 year old child to a pole out on the blazing sun in 100 + degree heat? I highly doubt it.

Consequently, they pulled us off the load and sent another truck to pick it up. A solo truck, none the less, without a dog or child on board which is what dispatch should have done in the first place. Can anyone say incompetency? So I decided to send a "letter of concern" to dispatch via the Satcom stating my discontentment. The following is what I sent verbatim:

Dispatch was aware that this shipper didn't allow dogs and only 1 driver into their facility at a time. When the load plan was sent, we were still told to pick up load with you knowing that one of us was going to have to stand outside in 100 degree heat with no shade or nowhere to sit..... in a dusty gravel parking lot. With dispatch being aware of this situation, this load should've been assigned to a solo truck without a dog to begin with. Furthermore, our dog is one of the family and like our child and has never been chained a day in her 7 years on this earth! Would you chain your 7 year old child outside in a dirty gravel parking lot in 100 degree heat? I think not. On top of all that, the dog would have been filthy by the time she got back in the truck. You don't want your equipment to be filthy, do you? This is by far the most unreasonable demand USX has made on us thus far. I wait with baited breath to see what is yet to come.

As for now, we are sitting in a Petro that was about 5 miles from the shipper waiting for another load and more than likely, we will be here until Monday morning. Is it just me or does it sound like USX has a vendetta out against us? I think someone should inform USX that they are barking up the wrong tree here. (Pardon the pun!) I back down to no one!!!

Thank You Steve & Cory

My hopes are that I didn't offend anyone. I was just trying to make my point. I'm glad that both of you agree with the fact that it was an unfair practice.

In US Xpress's defense, I have discovered that it wasn't actually dispatch's fault. The loads are made by the load planners and then sent to dispatch who in turn send them to the trucks. I don't think dispatch actually reads the in's and out's of each truck before they send the load; even though there was a message sent stating that they didn't allow dogs and only 1 driver. I think the loads are computer generated.

I don't think this is a shipper that US Xpress deals with a lot or has a big contract with so the chances of us coming across this situation again will probably be slim to none.

Once again, I thank both of you for seeing my point and I certainly appreciate the responses. Have a good one.

It's good to see that someone can have an intelligent conversation without having to getting personal and defensive. Thanks. What I'm trying to point out is I think it would be kind of difficult for USX to notate which drivers have children and dogs on board and to route those rigs to locations that allow children and dogs. It is kind of heartless for USX to expect the one driver/no dog rule upon arrival. Maybe a heads up would have been nice so you could have dropped off your co-driver and dog at a local truck stop or convience store to wait out the loading. My only experience with USX was when a neighbor, who was one of their driver's, killed himself one night in a motor vehicle accident in his POV. I notified USX the next morning, who notified his wife, who lived in Mexico and his family.

Stormie, Cory was on your side!

Stormie,

If you read Cory's statement, it is in support of your complaint.

The main problem is this stupid policy of the shipper! This is not USxpress's policy.

The dispatcher at USxpress is obviously a moron. You need to write a letter of complaint to an executive of USxpress and send it certified/rrr.

In Response To Cory

I understand US Xpress's reasoning for not wanting dogs or children on the property. I understand that they don't want to be sued and are just following the wishes of Goodyear. I'm not the type that thinks that rules apply to everyone else and not me. (The fact that they only allowed one driver in at a time makes no sense to me though. We are both employees of US Xpress.)

My complaint is that US Xpress KNEW about Goodyear's policy of no pets or children beforehand and still sent us to this shipper knowing that we had a dog on the truck. Did they really think that we would willingly tie our dog outside in 100 + degree heat? How could this even be considered to be humane treatment of an animal? I wonder what the ASPCA would have to say about this request?

When US Xpress advised me to "tie up my dog outside the gate", in my opinion they are asking me to commit the crime of animal cruelty, which is PUNISHABLE BY LAW! Why not send a solo truck with no dogs or children to begin with?

How Hard Is It To Understand?

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 26, 2007

"No children, No Dogs" A child get hurt or injured and US Xpress gets sued for millions. Some driver's dog bites a client of US Xpress and US Xpress gets sued for millions. US Xpress has to abide by the client's rules. The client has to live by the rules their insurance company gives them OR their insurance company WON'T pay if an accident should happen. People sue for anything. How hard is that to understand? How many people on this site are demanding to sue one company or another?
