I added 2-2.5 gallons of DEF into my recently filled diesel tank on my F250 Diesel Lariat 6.7l. I immediately realized what I did and called the dealership without ever starting the truck. http://valleyfordtruck.com I explained the situation, the amount of DEF and the fact that the truck hadn’t been started. The service representative on duty consulted his technicians and told me that it will be fine and just run out the tank and change the filters. Maybe even change them again shortly after to be extra safe. I assumed the DEF wasn’t that big of a deal from what their instruction was.

Turns out it is horribly damaging and the people I trusted were dead wrong. I ran out the tank of diesel as instructed, draining the separator every time I drove. After a week, the tank was empty and I changed the filters as instructed. On the way home that day, the truck lost all power and I was stranded on the side of the road. I saw diesel leaking on the passenger side of the truck. I towed the truck to the dealership. They said that there was a blockage and the return fuel line was blowing off. There was no blockage in the line itself. The next day they informed me that if DEF was in the system, warranty was void. I told them there was DEF in the system.

I explained to them that I called their dealership before starting the vehicle and was given bad information by their techs. I knew nothing about DEF or its possible effects, so I consulted the trusted FORD professionals. The people I spoke with didn't deny I called or the information they gave me which was comforting. You would think it would be pretty clear cut at this point what the right thing to do was. I told the dealer I am not authorizing another dime and to stop working on the truck. They worked on the truck one more day on their own dime.  They said they were going to look at it more Monday.

I didn’t hear from them all week, so I assumed they were fixing the truck since their direction is what actually contaminated the fuel system.  I only contaminated the tank and it would have stopped there if the tech and service manager were educated.   Clearly they were accepting some responsibility by working on it for free after my argument that their instruction caused the damage.  Five days later, they call me and I am told they hadn’t worked on it much more that week and told me to call my insurance co, they are not accepting responsibility.  I am guessing they realized the damage was well over $10K.

I should be out whatever it would have cost tow the truck and drain the tank since it was my error and I contaminated the tank, but anything other than that expense should be on the dealer. The dealer contaminated the rest of my system with their incorrect instruction. Had they told me to tow it to them, not to start it, or that they weren't sure what to do, I would have done nothing until I got more information. I trusted the biggest Ford TRUCK dealer in the area and now my truck is scrap. If anything, this should be on their insurance company, not mine. Cannot believe they aren't accepting responsibility. There are many cases of this happening throughout the country and VALLEY FORD TRUCK is the ONLY dealer to deny responsibility under these circumstances.  Other dealers did the right thing or gave actually the proper instruction.

After the denial of responsibility by Valley Ford, I spoke to and got nowhere with the service manager Bill.  I filed a complaint with Ford Corporate.  That also got me nowhere.  Valley Ford actually LIED to Ford Corporate and denied they gave the advice to me even after multiple actions and conversations that confirm they did.  I do have proof I called and they already confirmed the advice they gave me over the phone and we had discussions about this at length.  How can they now deny it when we spoke on this on multiple occasions and in detail?   This will only further hurt their already poor reputation online. Whats right is right, this is clear to everyone other than the dealer.    Horribly unethical dealer and liars to boot.

What Did The Warranty Say?

AUTHOR: Jim - ()

POSTED: Thursday, November 07, 2013

If indeed this is not under warranty, I urge you to tell them to go get _____.  Get yourself a good independent mechanic and don't give them another penny.  Their goal is to make as much money off of you as possible whatever it takes.  Please....find and form a relationship with a good independent mechanic.
