I have a family plan with Verizon Wireless. We originally joined a contract which was about $80 a month back in October 2001. Our contract was set to end in October 2003. When it came time to end the contract, we decided to renew it with the same plan for another 2 years.
When January 2004 came, we noticed a change in our contract. We were now paying $120 for a family plan with more minutes. We called them up and they claimed I had authorized it and that our contract was now set to expire February 2005. I had disagreed and they claimed that they would send me a copy of the contract that I signed to authorize it.
I never received a copy of the contract. In July 2005, we noticed they made another change to our family plan. We were now paying $190 for an upgraded family plan which I did not authorize! Again, I called and they claimed that I signed a contract for the new plan and to extend the plan to October 2007. They offered to send me a copy of the contract but that never happened.
It is now April 2006, nothing has been solved, they refuse to downgrade our service, and they offered to cancel the contract for $300 PER PHONE!! That's $900 for all 3 phones!!

Ken,
I have been a Verizon customer for a very long time, and in several sates with several lines.
I have not been happy with every aspect of what Verizon does, HOWEVER.. I CAN tell you that:
1). The STANDARD early termination fee is $175 per line of service. Regardless of length of contract.
2). The contract is associated with the account/phone#, NOT the plan you are on.
3). Changing your rate plan does not affect your contract unless you were on a promotion where you got something free or reduced price and were required to remain on a qualifying rate plan of $39.99 or more per month, etc..
I have had this issue with verizon on the contract extensions. Each time I contacted them with the error, and they fixed it.
As soon as you have an unresolved problem, cease verbal communication and do everything by certified mail, return reciept requested.
